The issue is not just the font, but also the browser. If you view the index in Internet Exploder then you see a square. If you view in FireFox then you see a triangle.

Not so, Coen. I use IE6 at work and IE7 at home and I see the character on both.

Are you able to see the character displayed on the table at the url I posted earlier (which was http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/seminar/fonts/lucida.htm, character 5654, at the bottom)?

I have many other thoughts, but they are either irrelevant or unsuitable.

    • RE: Board Index Question

      Eric,

I believe you need the font Lucida Sans Unicode. I took a look at Coen's stylesheet, and the "body" style calls for the following fonts in descending order of preference:
      font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Sans", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif, serif;

That's consistent with the opinion rendered by Microsoft Word as to the font when I copied and pasted a snippet containing the right arrow into it.

It appears to be unicode character 9654, which you'll find depicted in the very last character table on this page: http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/seminar/fonts/lucida.htm

I've got Lucida Sans Unicode on my system at home, but I'm darned if I know where it came from. I'd upload it for you, but I'm not sure what copyrights I'd be violating, and we don't want to get Coen (or me, for that matter) in trouble, do we?

    • RE: How to Newsgroups?

      380,

Here's what I recall, mostly accurate I think.

You need to have a usenet newsreader and access to a news server. A web browser, such as IE or Firefox, does not read the network news transfer protocol (NNTP), but either hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) or file transfer protocol (FTP). Outlook Express has a news client, but Outlook does not. The Thunderbird e-mail client (companion to Mozilla Firefox) also has a built-in news client. Forte Agent is a well known stand-alone news reader. It's predecessor, Free Agent (which was free) is apparently defunct.

News servers provide access to news groups, generally by downloading the contents of some horrendous number of individual newsgroup hosts on a periodic basis. Many (used to be most) ISPs have or provide access to a news server. There are a number of free news servers out there, which tend to be short-lived.

      -Gully

Edit: Incidentally, and perhaps ironically, Google Groups (which many on this forum consider too icky for their refined sensibilities) provides web-based access to a huge number of internet usenet newsgroups and maintains an archive of their contents (which it acquired from the one-time internet giant Deja View) going back to the mid 90s, and if you don't have a newsreader and a news server, it's a reasonable alternative.

    • RE: Lumber (timber) sizes in the UK?

      Hey Joe,
in North London my first port of call would be:
      TW Parker (Palmers Green) Ltd
      90-118 Green Lane
      London
      N13 5UP
      Tel: 020 8888 3477
      Fax: 020 88882273
      Internet: URL not known

As far as dimensions go, it varies from store to store. Lengths, as said above, tend to be in multiples of 0.3 Metres. In a lot of suppliers you can order in feet but beware that you will get a metric foot (eg. if you order a length of 10' you will get a 3M length (about an inch short).
      Profiles are still described in inches eg. a 4" x 2" PAR is usually 94mm x 44mm.
I recommend that you find out the size of the oak boards available before you finalise the design; that way you will avoid paying for waste and extra planing.
As a general rule inches are approximate and metric is exact.

Hi guys, the final migration is planned for 12 MST (U.S. Mountain Time) today, July 9th, and the old forums will be decommissioned then. I know, sadly this time has come.

I hope you'll stop by the Groups now and again to see the updates we're planning, and I sure do appreciate all of your contributions to the old forum. That's where I first met you all!

In the meantime, there will be a redirect from the old forum link to the new Groups link when the migration is complete, and I'm sure I'll see you all here.

      Cheers,

      TY John
I/we have known of the dreadging for some time. From my understanding the whole of the dredged area is now known as Superbank? I recall an article that Rabbit wrote that broke the story here. The footage of him in his hay day. "free ride?" At classic Kirra was epic! What a spot! Still is today only Much much different Y/N? Do you surf there?

Me as a regular foot is definately high on my list of places I would love to go. Although I have surfed Margerate river and bells in Tourque. But also Bali, Fiji, Java, Indonesia, Peru, Brasil, Equador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicauragua, El Salvador, Mexico, All of Baja by sail boat, Most of Hawaii, Tahiti. I live in California so all of that North, SOuth, Central, St Martin & Puerto Rico, in the Careibbean, Florida, South Carolina, New Jersey, New Hampshire,
      Spain, Portugal, France.

Would love to see superbanks, the gold coast, Byron Bay, South Africa, the sayschells, Andeman Islands, Samoa, New Zealand, Tasmania, Thailand, China, Alaska, Ireland, Israel, Cypress, Italy, I hear that they all have great waves that are worth a surf.

    • RE: Weathers Gone Mad! (jul 20 2007)

Normally we can expect by mid July to have had 2-3 hurricane swells from the Pacific Mexican coast but it seems that in years past we have had less than our share of Hurricane swell. Yes I know that this is counter intuitive given all the attention on the Gulf coast and Katrina. But here in the Pacific sadly we are not getting much swell the past few summers. Water temp also seems typical. 70 deg +-. Winter temps are 60 to 63 deg. also fairly normal. Rain fall has been light the past few winters the last wet winter was 3 yrs ago now. Winds are light where normally we expect to have 20 knot weterlys in the afternoons through the summer. so far light winds. Great for the beach but not the norm.

The transpac yacht race is on now and they are expecting a slow overall time with light winds now plegueing the fleet. In fact... They are sailing a heading at about 250 magnetic or a Southerly aproach where normally it is a more westerly coarse I am reading that it is un-presidented. This spring we had more than our fair share of New Zealand South swells. I wonder if JOHN SAYERS could tell me if the last summer down under was an active typhoon season as we got great surf from a few swells where normally we see a good New Zealand swell about one every five years this year we had back to back great swells. See photo of the Newport Beach Harbor entrance last March. It rarely breaks but when it does it is a welcome but rare sight. Last time it broke here like this I am told was 1976. Surfers LOVE hurricanes

    • RE: A New City - A Work in Progress

Thank you for the welcome and comments. I have an update now. ๐Ÿ˜„

First, I would like to tell you a little bit more about the city. The name is Sabal Island and it is located off the southeastern coast of Florida in the United States. More specifically, it is between Miami and the Bahamas, approx. 50 miles under the Bimini islands. As you can see in this image, I Photoshopped a fantasy island on a Google Earth screenshot.

      http://aycu08.webshots.com/image/22687/2004408100786261089_rs.jpg

(if these images are too large, please tell me and I will use the thumbnails instead)

Now here are some shots of the city. Some of these were taken at different stages, so they are not all the same progress.

This first one shows a street level view and you can see a new office tower at the intersection corner.

      http://aycu38.webshots.com/image/22757/2004467937849508630_rs.jpg

Here is a view looking down towards that same area about. You can see the road details were updated quite a bit in this one.

      http://aycu25.webshots.com/image/26144/2004496191178430984_rs.jpg

These low-rise buildings here are my latest creations for the city. The blue one on the left was the first done and it is a family-owned retail shop selling clothing and misc. households items. On the right is another retail store. These small buildings are the beginning of the high density low-rise developement to give it a traditional downtown feel with neverending touching buildings, of course with some aleyways here or there. ๐Ÿ˜„

      http://aycu08.webshots.com/image/24487/2004418676090316998_rs.jpg

Now here is the latest up-to-date view of everything so far:

      http://aycu33.webshots.com/image/22472/2004427727972669432_rs.jpg

But I have one more image for you to view. This is a render after I made the newest office tower at the corner so the low-rises are not in it, but you can see the full detail of the new tower.

      http://aycu16.webshots.com/image/26055/2004568121147834407_rs.jpg

(Components such as 2d people, cars, and palm tree by Google and added in for screenshots only. They are not permanent to the city, however I plan to make my own components as the city progresses).

Thank you for viewing. Comments and suggestions (good or bad) very much welcomed. I could use some constructive criticism to make this more real if there's anything you notice. Thanks. ๐Ÿ˜„

    • A New City - A Work in Progress

      Hello everybody,

I am new here and thought I would share a project I am working on for my first post. I am by no means an expert at SketchUp. This is a new city I am starting. It doesn't have a name yet. This won't be a city where the buildings' designs are determined by the textures applied. Instead, I plan to not use building textures and just design everything within SketchUp. You can see what I mean in these first images I have for you to view. I am trying for a realistic city. I'm not an architect, but I love buildings and I only use the knowledge that I have to do this. So far, I think I have been pretty accurate to real life measurements. The images are below (hosted by ImageShack.us - please click to enlarge). Feedback really appreciated. Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ˜„

      http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/9137/001uk4.th.jpg

So far, I have made this building complex. Here is a view above. On the right is the main office building. On the left is a parking garage.

      http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1829/002lo9.th.jpg

From the front. The main building is 18-stories. The parking garage is 5 stories.

      http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/5166/003zn9.th.jpg

      The parking garage up close.

      http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/2443/004kk1.th.jpg

The entrance to the parking garage slants up to level with the height of the city block.

      http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/1228/005xu7.th.jpg

In between is a staircase. Only the bottom two stairwells have entrances into the main building on the right.

      http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6123/006vf0.th.jpg

This is the main building. You can see each floor is in there.

      http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/4571/007ui7.th.jpg

Each storey is 12 feet tall with floors being 4 feet and window levels being 8 feet.

      http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1686/008ke2.th.jpg

A view above everything looking down.

      http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/912/009us2.th.jpg

This one was rendered in Kerkythea and edited in Photoshop.

All other images were screenshots from within SketchUp then cropped and resized in Photoshop.

      Thanks for viewing.

    • RE: My own kitchen

Do you want to make a new design of your kithcen or do you want to draw you current kitchen?
If you want to draw your current kitchen, then you could dowload some component library's so you can add table's and other stuff.
You can find those componente library's here and they are free to download ( there is also a material bonus pack here, so you've got more texture's ๐Ÿ˜ž
      http://sketchup.google.com/bonuspacks.html
If you put these components in your model, it will look a lot more life like, and realistic. You can of course also draw those details yourself but that is a lot of work.
