      Fredo:
      Excellent as usual 👍
      Looks like a great program. 👍 I Wonder how it compares to others like Arcgis. Would take a lots of testing to find out.
      I also like their emphasis on model preprocessing. Think that is where novices like myself get in big trouble trying to use questionable data. Ran into this in some searching;
      "

      • Contours should always point upstream in valleys
        Contours should always point downridge along ridges
        Adjacent contours should always be sequential or equivalent
        Contours should never split into two
        Contours should never cross or loop
        Contours should never spiral
        Contours should never stop in the middle of a map
        Liking to hit my finger with a hammer I tried this;
        Used you ploy segmenter to get more consistent points on the contour lines, ignored some info ref above. In most cases used 80 segs , but during process kept eye on entity info and for some short segs keep count down close to orginal. Needs to be redone to remove warts but looks more reasonable to me vs like orginal.

    • RE: Selecting just the outside face of the model

      Reduction of model size by -8.75% results in a -83.3% in FBX size?? I would not expect a 1:1 reduction ,but IMHO this indicates something else is going on other than just a geometery issue. I would suggest this: Triangulate your model using TIGS tool http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20347 , try the export again and do not select any options. Suggest you make copy first and use that. If this first step does not help then remove all materials and repeat( looking for plugin for you http://www.smustard.com/script/RemoveMaterials)
      BTW make sure all the faces in your model are set to face out.
      Is it possible to post your model??

      I have zero experience with the FBX conversion ,but my experience with help in reducing model size and getting such large reduction by geometry is very difficult. It appears from your post that you know the inside geo is the problem. Is that the case?
      Exporters have options; Have you checked those and see if it helps your problem.
      In addition it maybe worth the effort of going to widows, model info., statistics and purge your model before the conversion.

      IMHO there is a lesson to be learned.
      One cannot grab data and try to use without first understanding its quality.
      The OP info ,as I previously noted, was drastically under sampled in some areas. The sample interval( Both x , y and z) must be related to the gradients in that area
      As an experiment I used a xy plane with a small grid( one dimensional), set that at each level of the contours and intersected to get additional points( just at the several elevation levels). The results look very similar to Pabcots. Would not want to do this in a production sense. It is too labor intensive and prone to errors.
      The question I keep asking myself is: If it looks better is it?
      I could not find anything in the quick net search to answer that ❓

    • RE: Corrupt file, any help would be great

      Have not used MAC for years but checking specs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook- could not find on Apple site .They discontinued this model July 2010 but sold to education thru FEb 2012: found Apple only supports 4gb memory and the specs only show an intergrated graphics so guessing you must have a special build. Plus the info dump shows a 386x 64 arch.
      If you can start the MAC in some type of safe mode make sure the stand alone graphics is force use for SU:
      Su runs as a 32 bit app see if there is some type of boot file where you can force use of all your memroy. On pc it would be use memory remapping and deselction of max memory use ( this keeps the OS from hogging all memory) for MAC ??).
      It appears you are running out of system resources but you should be ok if it is all being used (I have open 340MB file on my 386 x32 with only 4GB ram but had to change syten memory so only 1 gb could be used by the OS ( Win xp in this case) which then left SU 3GB instead of normal 2 GB);
      May be you should post model on file sharing site so some one can delete all textures etc so you can at least get the model open and then you have to make some mods to keep model size down. I wonder if redoing will help if the same thing happens again?
      Just some thoughts for what ever they are worth:(

      so yeah, most if not all of my views on guns has that experience ingrained.. so maybe if my dad didn't have guns then i'd be dead right now.. but honestly, that experience didn't teach me to buy guns so i can protect myself in the future… it taught me how lame guns are and i've chosen to avoid them for the past few decades..

      *We get all these talking heads on TV and because they wrote a book they are an expert.

      *Sorry think you are wrong on the ADD. A doc in the area has developed the technique using X ray ( maybe that is the wrong word ) but it maps brain function while the patient does certain tasks.

      *Sorry about your family experience. I had to more that once remove all firing pins for guns in the house, and hide knives because of threats from father. We can never know what the out come of an event would have been if circumstances had been different. As I said above hind sight gives us 20/20 vision.

      *Use the brain. ARRG : We have now degraded to insults as usual in these types of discussions. That is a typical left approach.

      *There has not been much press coverage but I think the same day of the shootings students in China were attacked with a knife. The worst US case of this sort was in 1935( Talking head hat I have not searched) but gun nor knife was not used. Some people would not like to hear those stats.

      *This will go not over big ,but when I talked about the auto loading I mean police should not have these types of objects either. I live a short distance from Columbine and watched their action all day on TV and they would suit up, remove and suit up again while they let a teacher bleed out in the school and the gunmen had free hand to kill as they please. There is no reason for them to have assault rifles!

      • When you talk assault rifle look at the Swift 220 which is a varmint rifle. This was introduced in about 1935, has a muzzel velocity of about 4000 fps ( much higher that the 223) etc, very little drop at 500 yards and the hydro static killing power is high. Is this a weapon? No! It can become one if used for such. I get tried of folks calling any thing in the their talking points a weapon. A object only becomes a weapon when used for attack or defense in combat fighting or war.I guess that means any thing in our daily lives if not used properly??
        *The right to bear arms ( note it is plural) is for the sovereign to protect them selves from a despotic government. History has shown that is necessary. What is one of the first things they want to do?? It has been shown time and again the police will not or cannot protect you. If you don't care that is your choice.

      *Issue with what some call assault rifles ,but don't know what they are, can be solved by out law-ing any rifle which uses the gas generated form its discharge of extracting or loading round. IE only bolt actions allowed. I question limits on mags helping much. In my younger days hunting with single action 20 GA and flushing two pheasants at once the chances of getting both were good.

      • Products from Hollywood must be cleaned up. I have herad reports they donate more than the NRA to congress to protect their rice bowls. I am surprise someone has not used a bow yet because of the Hunger Games.The bow I used to shoot Carp in Lake Erie would put arrow through a bucket of sand. Question if what is being called assault rifle would do that.

      Evil exists in every society and we need to make sure whatever is done solves the real problem.
      Do you really think evil cares what laws you pass.
      Cars kill many more children than guns so why not outlaw them? Oh; that would cost money and make it too inconvenient for people.
      In fact the rifle used was not an assault rifle but a look alike and I am sure you have not heard the same day some 20 children were attacked in China. Guess what was used? A knife? And then of course we have our own gov. selling real assault rifles to folks that should not have them and I wonder how many childern have been killed with those. Where is you indignation about that??
      I am for action to solve the root cause but not just a knee jerk reaction from folks with a agenda. The law that has been attempted to pass was just putting a limit on high capacity mags but look at Oswald and the number of shots he fired from a single shot.
      The per capita ownership in some countries is near the US and yet the gun death rate is much lower that ours. That proves guns is not the cause but the symptom.
      My contention is someone wanting to kill a number of folks will find a way no matter what we do. They will use a knife, ax, sword , bow, shot gun etc.
      It will then be argued less will be killed and I will answer how many is acceptable to you?

      More comments:
      1)The 400mm model stand alone skp file in your zip is a different size that the one in the kitcab file model;
      2) If I open the 400 stand alone model it opens at the expected drawing axis origin, importing the 300 and 350m then into the same drawing will then come in as components even though they are not componets in the zip fileoffset some what and with out the move tool;
      3) SU treats components differently for ones created within the specific skp file. Try scaling one with the tape tool and you will see that.
      I am coming to the conclusion what are you seeing is just an artifact of the work flow you have going. Especially since both Dave R and I am found no problem when opening from the kitcab file. Have you tried opening from the in model component browser and found same problem?
      4) If all your cabinets are separate files suggest you create a collection or library and try again and see if the problem is still there.

      Don't bother spurious comment. I thought you may have modeled the base 1/2 and created the total by mirroring that 1/2 but axis was coming from the side panel solid group. You are keeping the dimension consistent as far as the 18 mm panel width but did notice the 400 model was measuring 450mm width at back.

    • RE: Component insertion point problem

      PC here + SU free M2 and cannot duplicate your problem. The only way I can get unit to jump to origin if I use the "replace selected " functionally of the component browser. The insertion point works like the user manual. IE if I bring the 400 unit in from the browser, then use the move tool to move to origin by using a mid point then the next import from the componet browser uses the mid point and not the the componet axis as the insertion point. It is noted the base cabinet does have a gluing plane set and noted something strange to me because when I double click an axis was showing out side the bounding box. I guess this was because you are using the mirror approach to create it. Exploding and making a " regular" componet removed this but don't think it is part of your problem.
      Not dragging in from thumbnail but by select in the browser list 😐
      And when doing that I do get the move tool" cross" when dragging to insert. Does this mean a different version artifact?? or a graphics card issue?? or ??
      Sorry missed part of your post. I am using the models from the in model list included in your zip file.

      There is a very long write up in the user manual on this subject you should read.
      Here is a note I copied from it.
      "Note: The component axes is the default insertion point (the point where the cursor grabs the component) for a component the first time you place the
      component in the model from the Components browser. The insertion point will change to the point where the Move tool selects a component if you place
      a component and then reposition the component using the Move tool."

      wkearney99
      One of the first things I look for when evolved in trouble shooting of spacecraft or hardware failures is non standard configuration;
      What jumped out at me in your posting was what I commented on.
      Your comments show a complete lack of under standing of high speed interfaces, common mode rejection and EMC problems one can run into with widely separated interfaces. I have seen cases like this where switch to ground of even short cable lenghts with a low voltage causes the circuit to act like a pulse forming network( because of reflections) and the signal will propagate through several circuits until the impedance loading slows it down enough that it will then trigger circuits down stream form the actual cause. You obviously don't know Teflon cables go through a state change at room temp and the phase velocity can change drastically and is a function of the processes they are built to; balanced circuits can operate properly even with one side open and will change performance with small changes in temp.
      I am not saying these are the root cause of your problem but it just a simple suggestion to eliminate a variable.

      I would do it ,but unlike you I am not omniscient and don't know all the possible causes of problems so will defer to your sophomoric posting and wish you luck.

      BTW you cannot assume because SU8 shows the problem that it is the cause. I just spent a week trouble shooting a problem when I switched from FireFox 3.2.6.8 to the new 16.02. When using the vertical scroll bar it would cause a OS kernel blue screen for some web sites but IE would work ok. It was traced to a Nvidia driver I had not updated.

      Su runs as a 32 bit application and does not use dual cores.
      If you do have a graphics card make sure it is forced to use it for SU. I would think the memory you have now should be ok but make sure the bios setup has memory remapping selected and use max memory deselected if you even have those options

      In general the alignment will require a translation and two rotations. You have speciacl case with the way the two axies are aligned ( and their circular symmetry) and where the components axis are place . Slelect the short tube start move and type [0,0,0]. That will move it to the 0,0,0 global axis location installed as Dave shows shows above

      Oh no I completely understand but what I was getting at is what you said above already the software wont utilize those cores so it pointless.

      We'd have to agree on a definition of pointless I think. Right now, for running anything like SU, yes it would not be very useful. In the future it - the general case of massively parallel systems rather than this particular board - is almost certainly essential, which I think makes it have a big, shiny, flashing, sparkly point. If ones interest is in building new exciting computational doohickeys for the future this project would be like catnip. If ones interest is in using current tools to design and build the things SU is good for then at best the project would be a "hmm, cool idea, wonder if it will ever work, now what the blazes did I do to get that mess from subdivide-and-smooth?".

      Do you think this is a new idea.
      Massive parallel systems have been studied for years. For some types of task they do have an advantage and others where the problem is more of a serial issue they are not and in fact can even be slower that a single core syetm. You can do an internet search and find where test have been run on simple tasks to show the time to complete task comparisons. Should be, could be etc. are just that. In addition parallel systems are a real head ach to find bugs, correct and make sure you have not introducted other problems.
      Just look at MS and other " high tech" orginizations and the bugs they have at release and they basically use the users to test for them and then bugs take years to fix if ever. For one of our suppliers for a " simple system" we fored a regression test taht would run 24/7 for days before we would even appove a " simple" sofware drop.
      The baaisc point I am trying to make is there needs to be a lots of good sytem enginerring put into what is to be done beofre the design even starts
