      Great thread!

Glad to hear its not just me ... !

Every walk, bicycle ride, holiday or shopping trip I go on, I now think "How would I model that" or "that would look great in google earth".

I now actually find myself tailoring bike rides so we gos past a particular church or interesting building. This is great, it means I have got tonnes of photos to model some buildings from, BUT, there's just not enough hours in the day to model them! 😒 ....

I even had a dream about Fredoscale the other day - I accidentally put rounded edges onto my fiancee's face, she was distraught and I couldn't undo! 😳

    • RE: World of Houses design challenge by i.materialise

May I just ask a couple of questions ....

*Is this challenge to design a new house as opposed to modeling a house already in existence?

*Many SketchUp users aren't architects and so maybe won't have the desired knowledge to build an accurate 'real world' house - so, if the house just has basic structural and functional integrity, will these models be accpeted?

      Thanks. πŸ˜„

I can assure you I wasn't thinking about that, seeing as though I don't really know what you're talking about! πŸ˜„

Thanks for all the info though, didn't realise i could use RTF and import it. Quite hand to know.

    • Spec Sheets and Cutting Lists

      Hi,

Just wondering what the best way would be to produce tabulated information in Layout?

I am producing spec sheets and cutting lists for timber equipment (along with appropriate scale drawings) but have never really had to deal with tables or data in Layout before.

Other than simply typing out the cutting list in Layout, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks.

You probably need to manually divide the faces a bit first, but drawing lots of intersecting lines and a little pushpulling is easy ??

Thanks TIG, thats a neat ruby, many thanks. πŸ˜„

    • Modelling Ruinous Walls

      Hi all,

      Another question, I'm afraid.

Just wondering how you guys would be able to tell me the best way to model old ruinous walls, similar to the one below ...

      http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/29/21/2d/wall-ruins.jpg

I like to model old buildings and am currently modelling a huge ruin in my lunch breaks at work.... I would usually just draw a wall, push/pull to correct height, then make it 'jagged' further, but this is quite time intensive - especially for large ruined churches etc. Would there be a quicker way around this particular problem of mine?

I've searched EVERYWHERE I can think of, and am starting to pull out my hair, so hoping one of you can help me discover where I can turn back ON, the option to show the choice of templates when SU starts up?!

Any help would save my already dwindling follicles. πŸ˜„

Theyre' just normal PDFs, so just setting them up. I've actually been on my sickbed for most of the week with awful flu/cold so Carnegies have been slow. Was starting to feel a bit better though, hence my post, although, saying that, think I need to go back to bed. 🀒

Is this how you'd do it?

      Hi,

Just after a bit of advice to see how you experts would set uyp your drawing when you have a floor plans and elevations available to you.

Would you have your modell on the floor and then your elevations in the corresppnding sides you can you use parallel projection and your front/back views etc? Or is there a better way to do this?

We have just gone from TurboCAD to SketchUp and i will NEVER go back!

You can have a similar 'tabbed' setup on SketchUp by making use of the Scenes .... http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=39656 may shed some light on it....

    • Is there any way to connect endpoints?

      Hiya,

I'm having a few troubles with drawing shapes onto flat surfaces (they are defintiely flat!) and am just wondering if there's a plug-in to join end points together?

I'm sure we've all been there where you have drawn a shape on an face but it doesn't make a face, so you have to trace over and over and over and over and over and over ..... you get the idea!

      Any suggestions appreciated.

Sorry if this has come up before, I searched but couldn't find it.

      Thanks.

    • Is there a way to ....

see which models have recently appeared on the 3d buildings on GE that are near your locality, or in a wider context, new to your country? The only was I can see to do it is to have a good old fashioned explore!

Interesting link, thanks, but don't think you can customise the actual areas can you? They have to be single points as far as I can see?

    • Putting non-buildings onto GE? Help please.

      Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I am wondering if you guys, can help me, help out a friend.

We are initially wondering two things:

      1. if it's possible to upload our user-defined geographical boundaries (say of voting wards, or catchement areas etc) to a layer on google earth and perhaps be able to stylise them? Nothing too fancy of course. The boundaries could be many miles wide, but I suppose we could make these smaller and divide them?
      2. add graphical data to these geographical boundaries so our layers become like a 3d graph? This could be via the extrusion of the actual boundaries themselves, or by adding a number of graphical icons.

Obviously, we know this won't be accepted as part of the 3d warehouse! πŸ˜„

Suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

      Thanks.
