Maybe it's grouped too deep. I had a few pieces of render missing when I grouped a group inside a group inside a group etc. Try also resetting to default vray render settings, if you haven't tried it already. What also might be the case is that you have some material ID channel, or some other channel, chosen in Vray frame buffer. In upper left corner, check that. What's strange here is that those chairs on top don't look like the chairs in bottom picture...

RE: VRay Swarm Problems
Thanks for reply andybot. For me, it works only after a daily dose of troubleshooting. In V-Ray 2 I had no such problems with distributed rendering, so I'm still wondering if I'm maybe overlooking something. If someone else uses Swarm also, please write if it's working for you or not. Thanks everyone.

VRay Swarm Problems
Does anyone here use Swarm with V-Ray? I'm having so many problems with it, basically troubleshooting it every day for 1-2 hours. And it seems that it's a different problem every day. I tried every solution possible to get this to work as it should. I tried reinstalling every node several times, reinstalling license server, disabling firewall, antivirus, had to reset network devices a couple of times one every computer, went through a couple of procedures to reset my ip configuration, on one I had to reinstall Windows completely. I replaced my router to see if that's the problem. But as soon as I think, OK, great, now it works, an hour later another problem comes up with it. And every time I contact support, they tell me read this and this on help, but I've read all that a hundred times already.
So, I just want to see, is it still just me, or is this a problem that someone else experiences? -
RE: Artistic Direction of SketchUp
Just to make sure, you know that you can use orbit tool by pressing the mouse wheel? You don't actually have to click on Orbit button. When it comes to look and style, yeah, it could be better. But it's not a big deal for me, I always have to customize it as I like anyway.

RE: Window Transparency Problem
Oh God! Such an idiot. I'm going to kill myself. And I've been painting and repainting, exploding and grouping for like 40 minutes. I feel like such a fool now.
And I'll post in v6 from now on, update my profile etc. Thanks Box, thanks Pilou. -
Window Transparency Problem
Can someone tell me if I'm doing something wrong here, or is this some bug?
I made a window, copied the component, painted the glass with glass material, and now some of them look dark and some of them look bright. What's wrong here? What's also strange is when I copy one of these dark windows, it goes back to normal, but when I copy more of them at once, they're still dark...

RE: V-Ray Wishlist
Oh, great. I hope 3.5 comes quickly. Nobody has their own wish? Just me?
-
RE: V-Ray Wishlist
Yeah, I mean, I have two monitors, but sometimes I want to open AutoCAD or Photoshop there. So, overlay would save both screen space and time.

V-Ray Wishlist
Is it too early for a wishlist?
Here is my wish:
Interactive Render OverlaySince RT is already working nice, wouldn't it be great if you could click into the model through the frame buffer, use move, rotate, everything? You wouldn't have to minimize the render, then change model, then bring back the render to see what happens. Workflow would become even better. I found myself clicking on render several times yesterday, expecting it to move, so that's my wish
Please use these thumbs up/down to vote.

RE: How to Model Rubbish
I did some still images of a landfill once, so it was easy for me to photoshop it. But for a flythrough, hm, I don't know what would give you a good result. You could use textures, but that will still look flat. Maybe combine it with Eneroth Fractal Terrain Eroder plugin to get some bumpiness. If that's not good enough, then start downloading rubbish from 3dwarehouse and scatter it around with Skatter of course. At least rubbish is easy to find on 3dwarehouse, 90% of stuff there is trash anyway haha

RTs, GPUs, HDDs, SSDs, Dropboxes, My Clouds
Hi everyone,
While my laptop is in repair, I once again got into various calculations and setups, what would be the best solution for creating a productive rendering setup. And more I read, less I know. So I hope someone can help me out.
These would be my questions:
-
Does V-Rray have absolutely the same functionality with standard (bucket) rendering and with RT rendering? If not, what can't RT do?
-
What sort of graphics card is best to buy for RT rendering? Some say these Nvidia Quadro, AMD Firepro, Tesla cards, some others say it's better to just stick to gaming cards. Obviously people writing these posts use different software, so what is a good solution for SketchUp and V-Ray and why?
-
Does RT work with distributed rendering? For example I have one graphics card in my PC, one in my laptop, can they cooperate? Or do I have to stick two GPUs in one computer?
-
Where do I have to keep the files for distributed rendering and what would be the fastest way of loading files for distributed rendering? Do I have to keep a copy of some texture or proxy on each PC, in the same exact location? Or can one PC send data to the other? If it can send data, is it fast enough?
-
I'm guessing the best would be to keep the files in the same place on my computers. Dropbox comes to mind for easy syncing, but is there a faster and cleaner solution?
-
I saw this Western Digital My Cloud, which is basically a hard drive connected via internet cable to your wi-fi router. It's a shared hard drive for all devices on that netwoerk. If I put stuff on that, how fast can it send data to my computers during rendering? Is anyone familiar with this?
-
Should I put textures and resources on SSD for faster render load, or is HDD enough? I'm asking because it sometimes takes a lot of time to load some scene for rendering.
-
What would be your ultimate setup and configuration? If there are some people who have to travel every once in a while and do renderings almost every day, I would like to hear your experience and suggestions on how to organize stuff.
Thanks a lot!

RE: Wishlist for SketchUp 2018
Yeah, one more thing I always forget to ask about. Could you guys filter the content of 3dwarehouse? I respect everyone's effort, but to be honest, some people just suck at modeling and post things that choke the warehouse. There are quality filters on websites that sell stock photos, stock 3D, graphics, games etc. So, I think we really need one or two guys out there just filtering all the stuff that's uploaded. And a better search and rating for 3dwarehouse. And perhaps a PREMIUM section, where stuff wouldn't be free. There are sites that sell, like this one, but I still think 3dwarehouse would be the best place to sell our stuff. Hope you'll consider this.

RE: Wishlist for SketchUp 2018
Thanks for these clarifications slbaumgartner. I think most people here are architects and designers, so we don't really have a full understanding of things that can or can not be improved in our favorite program. It would be nice if SketchUp could get better integration with other software that's more capable of doing stuff this program can't do. For example, animation, subdivision modeling, texturing, high poly assets, those are the things that SketchUp can't and probably will never do as good as some other software. But we, as architects and designers, get a lot of requests to do walkthroughs, animations, to model some chair for the interior and that sort of stuff. There are ways to import/export these models into and out of SketchUp, but that's so hard in most cases. So, it would be great if you could simplify and speed up connections with other software. And maybe you can also consider making a 3rd, 4th, 5th app, next to SU and LayOut which would maybe specialize in those areas. Same as you did with LayOut integration. Something that would just read skp file and work it's own thing in a completely different window. Or something where SketchUp itself could use other files as references without actually bringing them into the model. And then sell those separately if you want. I don't care if I have to pay extra, but we need some more tools to do all the stuff that clients ask us to do. We just need a familiar interface and a logical way to organize and connect it all.

RE: Wishlist for SketchUp 2018
Slbaumgartner, I maybe have a silly question. Would SketchUp work faster if it was connected or written with some other code, not Ruby? I have no idea what these codes are all about, how they work, what's used to write something, what translates what code... I'm not a programmer, so my understanding of code is very limited. But I do understand that you said some other codes are faster, so would it be possible, or reasonable to rewrite SketchUp using faster code? Maybe I'm just talking jibberish... Anyway, I'm quite happy with SU as it is, computation speed is not the most important thing to me, but faster is always nice. I'm more concerned about some organizational and visual stuff that I think can be improved easily and don't require such fundamental changes of software. And there are a bunch of bugs that really go on everyone's nerves. Those require more immediate attention in my opinion.

RE: Wishlist for SketchUp 2018
Yeah man, what's up with these material, scenes and layers palletes? We need those better. And we need everything else otb mentioned.

RE: My first home to be constructed UPDATE!
Looks great! Architecture here really "feels the place". Great SketchUp model too. I'm eager to see how it looks in the end.

RE: SketchUp 2017 Wishlist
On previous versions SketchUp didn't force itself to go in front of other open programs. I mean, if I open a large file, it keeps popping up in front of my PDF viewer for example, or in front of another skp file, or whatever I use. It can be really annoying if you want to open 300 mb file, and it takes 10 minutes. You can't do anything else during that time basically. I just want it to load in the back and not force itself while I'm doing other stuff.

RE: Folding Chairs and a Screen
I love simple SketchUp style presentations. I wish clients didn't make me render shit all the time. What's wrong with this, it's perfect.

RE: BMW files suit against Turbosquid
I completely agree with JQL. How is taking a picture of a house, or making a 3D representation of something copyright infringement? Copy means take something and make the identical thing. Take a brick, or take a sheet of metal and make a new house or a new car. And these 3D models can in no way be used to replicate the original. They can't be used for making a mold, operating a CNC machine or anything similar. They can only show how something looks like, not how it's manufactured, what technology or engineering is used. It's even free advertising for BMW, I don't see in which way are they suffering damage from this. I'm sure Turbosquid will win this on court.
