see I work in London, but live in Chatham. the most direct route is the A2 through Greenwich... which has been Hell
at times it's taken us an hour to move 200 yards. thanks to the olympic lane being closed to all traffic. not used mind you! just closed while the rest of us are stuck in 1 lane.
so I'm glad the bloody games are over very soon...

OK poser or DS are not going to model for you. they are not modeling apps, but pose and render apps.
to model, you'll need a modeler. now, for free you have a few choices. Hexagon (over at Daz), Wings3D and Blender come to mind right off.
all three save to OBJ - which is the basic format for DS and Poser on imports. (only Poser Pro will import DAE files)
I took this one myself today while at work. there's several of these through out the block of flats...

yup in one. it's marketed as a gaming addon.. but when you consider, it's a 16 key fully programmable keyboard.. it's far more than just gaming.
mines set to all the major SU shortcuts on the keys with the thumbpad set to change to pan, rotate, etc

I wish I knew how to give it a UI - so you could select edge count (3,4,5,etc) and colour...
sorry no.. the only real converter for MAX is Max itself. the way it stores model information, (the various modifiers), means it has to be converted by Max. Even the various 3D converter programs need Max installed to do the conversions..
what you can do tho, is to install the trial of Max and you'll have 30 days to convert the files to something like DAE (Collada) that SU can import...

I have noticed this from time to time, but I have not taken the trouble to note what circumstances produce it. I am sure that others have come across this.
I have with imported OBJ's with TIG's ruby. mainly I find hidden edges and vertices that I have to manually draw in then delete to get rid of the edgeless faces.. no layers involved...
right now I'm stuck on 1 17" monitor....
gonna be delayed on completing this..
first my 1TB Primary drive took a dump. thanks to a mate, I was able to save my main system / work partitions to a 500GB. (the rest I can save later when I more HD space..)
then my graphics card took a dump. the cooling fan's going On/off/on/off/on/off... so right now, I'm stuck with the onboard video.. (a 6150le whatever that is.....)
be a coupla weeks before I can afford a new GFX card...
the only complaint I have is, the forcing of full screen layout. yuck.
