Honestly, if SketchUp won't do the job for you there are many more capable, more expensive, and more difficult to use programs available. Shell out the big bucks, go take some expensive training courses, and high-poly-model your way to heaven, if you feel like it or really need such features.

That time of the month for you?

      Just tried it a little.

Just used the Push-Pull with CTRL four times with a rectangle with a curve on front. I didn't round out the edges of the curve, you'll probably have to to get it more accurate.

Do you have the soap, skin and bubble ruby installed? That could probably be used. The FFD ruby as well.

TBH you're wanting to put in way more accuracy then I've ever wanted to put into a model. I can kinda understand why you'd want to do it if it's just a challenge you've set yourself, but I think you'd need better photos to model from.

Another way you could do it is when you are creating the top curve instead of doing it all in one so it is one straight line, you do it in around 10 steps. And instead of just scaling in back from the top of the model, you also scale the front face as well.

I got bug splats even when downloading from the 3DW. I eventually opened it okay by opening up SU and loading it directly into SU from the program.

I hope you can work out what to do from my crappy example. I'm not a very good tutorial writer.

I keep getting Bug Splats whenever I open the file. I've never had that problem before and files open from 3DW okay so there might be a problem with your file.

This is for a jet engine, but the principles will be pretty much the same.

I might be wrong, but I'm not really seeing the need for S+Sing there. Just increase the segments of the circle to get a more rounded circle and the model will be fine without S+S.

    • RE: You know what ...... WE already have SU7 in a way!

Having so many fantastic ruby improvements may mean it's more difficult for Google to release SU7. Unless SU7 can match SU6+++ then most people who frequent this site won't change. I remember seeing at least one person on this site who still uses SU5 over SU6. Unless SU7 is a massive improvement I'd imagine there will be plenty of people who stick with SU6.

    • RE: [Plugin] Polyreducer 0.1

I've only done some quick tests, but so far I'm struggling to find any reason for this plugin. Following on from Solo, I pulled a model of Bender from the 3DW. I tried a poly reduction of 30% on it, it messed up the model slightly and actually increased the file size from 1500 kb to 1639 kb.

So the owner (!) of Auto-de-sys (maybe it should be "Auto-de-fé") was at the booth at the AIA convention today. He went on and on about people were always sending him SketchUp models that couldn't be 3D printed, and that they ended up completely rebuilding the models and SketchUp was a primitive toy and so forth.

I interrupted him and pointed out that I've never had any problem with getting my SU files made into STL for printing, and that I've helped various firms win major RCP's with SketchUp models and renderings, and even done fairly well myself in a few. He insisted this was not possible; I suggested that I was simply very lucky. He insisted I couldn't turn SketchUp files into STLs. I said I used a script, or if it was too complex I simply imported the file into Rhino and used their STL exporter. I suggested again that perhaps I was just really, really lucky.

He became really, really angry. I thought he might hit me.

I mentioned this to...ahem...another SCF regular in attendance, and she suggested it was because SketchUp is eating away at his retirement fund, and he knows it.

(I did see the demo for their SketchUp-challenger, which is about 80% of the old FormZ tools minus any of the cool NURBS capabilities and with a warmed over SU interface. Yawn.)

I'm hoping that you're wrong. I want their Sketchup challenger to wipe the floor with Sketchup. If that happens then Google will have serious motivation to improve SU. If SU's challengers are nowhere near as good as SU then they don't need to improve.

I know nothing about STL's and 3D printing. Is the script you used your own creation or one that is widely available? If you are one of the few people who can create STL's with SU and the new A-d-s system does it easily I can understand him getting pissed off with you.

      Well? Huh?

Apart from two people who had hippy parents who didn't want their kids to handle money because they'd be too concerned with material things, every single one of us.

It's unofficial: most of the people complaining about 3DW being full of junk don't share their models there.

      And there's the main problem.

I don't think it will be an "insane" texture. Looking at it I think it will just be a normal picture of a flower. It is the projection over the subsmoothed object that makes it look so weird.

How is it possible to scale just the top parts? I'm trying to imagine it with a rectangle now.. wouldn't the whole thing just be equally scaled/stretched? Is there some way to just select a portion of a rectangle?

You just select the top face. And you use the Zorro (or knife if you have Subdivide and Smooth) close to the top so that is the only part that is affected.

A rectangle wouldn't be the best example because it would just create two triangles on each verticle face and would look pretty bad. The best way to demonstrate this would be to use the free hand draw to create a random shape.

    • RE: Organic modelling question

You could use the Tube Along Path plugin on curves to create the strands. Then you could Zorro the top parts and the scale the end of the tube to create the tapers.

You could also use the soapskin to create the longer strands and then Tube along paths at the ends.

It'd be a lot of work to do though.

My first thought about Subdivide and Smooth was that it'd be difficult to control and gets these effects. But thinking about it you could produce them quite easily in a big model and then use the knife tool to select parts which you could then use on this.
