      Hi folks.

One tool that is underused while tracing pictures is the Arc Tool. With its ability to make each new arc tangent with the previously drawn one, it makes for very nice and continuous curves. Of course you can edit the number of segments afterward to avoid generating too many geometries.

      Just ideas.

      Hi Susan, hi folks.

Dont forget that you can Orbit, pan and zoom in the middle of a dimensionning operation to force SU to use a plane instead of another.

    • RE: Copie en série déplacer et pivoter

      Bonjour.

    • RE: Zoom out and frame shows through skin?

      Hi CalypsoArt, hi folks.

This is due to a limitation of OpenGL.

Lets call A, the distance from the observer to the outer skin of the wall and B, the distance from the observer to the inner skin of the wall which is also the outer skin of the framing components (2x4s).

As you move farter from the model, the difference between A and B becomes smaller. At some point, open GL cannot makes the difference and shows all it "sees" at the same distance.

The workaround is to hide the edges and faces of the frame that are causing the problem.

See attached SU file for ideas. This is your model where I hid all the faces and edges of the framing components that are in contact with the plywood sheet.

    • RE: Trouble with intersecting roof lines

      Hi Caliliving, hi folks.

I prefer to use the following sequence:

1 - Draw the outside outline of the roof.

      2 - Build the roof.

3 - Close the bottom face if it is not already closed.

4 - Pull down somewhat to make the sides of the soffits.

5 - Do an inside offset corresponding to the wanted horizontal overhang.

6 - Pull the house itself down.

See attached SU file for ideas.

      Bonjour.

    • RE: So Frustrated with SU

      Hi Rudbeckia, hi folks.

Your model dont look like it should slow down a fairly powerfull machine. I once worked on a 100 Megs model without too much problem since there where not any numerous repetion of elements in it. Maybe, in your model, there are some large quantity of geometries that may be slowing down your machine. Even a small file can bring a powerfull computer to a halt.

      Try this test:

      1 - Start SU.

      2 - Draw a cube.

3 - Make a component with the cube.

4 - Purge the model to get rid of any unused material and or texture, component and style.

5 - Save it and check the file size. It should be about 9.29 K (thats what I have on my work PC).

      6 - Select the component.

7 - Move/Copy it along the red axis and specify 99 copies. You should have a line of 100 cubes.

8 - Save again and check file size. It should be around 21.8 K. You now have 100 more geometries in the model but the file is a little over twice as big.

9 - Select the whole line.

10 - Move/ copy it along the green axis and specify 99 copies. You should now have an array of 100 x 100 or 10000 cubes. You will probably notice that SU is a bit slugish when orbitting and zooming. It is not that bad with panning.

11 - Save again and check file size. It should be around 1.19 Megs or about 128 times the original file with one cube although the number of geometric element is now 10000 times what was in the original file.

I leave it up to you to select the whole array and Move/Copy it vertically and ask for 99 copies. You will end up with 1000000 cubes and a very large file and SU will be nearly dead, if you have the patience to wait for SU to generate those 900000 additional cubes.

I just did a 10 fold augmentation by copying the 10000 cubes array up with 9 copies to get 100000 cubes. It took about 30 seconds on my work PC The file size is now 11.8 Megs and SU responds, slugishsly but its workable, only if I use Wireframe Mode and turn profiles off in the Style window.

My point is to show that even with a 1.19 Megs file, the computer begin to slow down noticably.

In your case, the culprit could very well be the trees and other vegetations but you dont have dozens of them although they may have thousands of facets each (the leaves). Maybe it is you graphic card driver that is to blame. I updated mine a while ago and it improved SU a lot, specially the antialiasing.

If you cannot post your file here because of its size, try uploading it to the 3D Warehouse since the limit is higher. After that, post the link here.

      Just ideas.

Good trick about selecting the two faces. Using symmetrical scaling do the trick and you can type an exact value in the VCB.

      Hi Remus, hi folks.

Here is a trick I was once given on the old SU forum: When you save a multi scenes file, save it with the scene that you want to be active when you next open the file. Usually this will be the first scene. Otherwise, you give the punch by showing the final scene when the file opens.

    • RE: 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator

      Bonjour.

      1 - Déplacement vers l'avant / Déplacement vers l'arrière = Zoom in / Zoom out.

      Hi Chris, hi folks.

      @unknownuser said:

So are you coming down to the Berkeley Kite festival on Saturday and Sunday this weekend Jean? Ray Bethel is going to be there doing his 3 kite ballet too. Maybe you could come show him a thing or two?

I wont be in Berkeley but I may see Ray in Dieppe France in September. I first met Ray in Verdun, near Montreal, back in 1995. Talking about who would be showing a trick or two to who it would be the reverse. I have learned a lot from Ray and, every time I meet him, I learn something. I consider him to be the great master of multiple kites flying. He has more time than I do to practice but, dont be afraid, in twenty five years, I shall be good 😉

By the way, if you happen to see him, tell him that you met Johnny from Montreal. He shall be happy.

I flew together with Ray and another of my friend (and kite team mate at that time). Each of us were fying two kites each, doing a six kites ballet flown by three flyers. That was a good experience considering that Ray is deaf 😉 Needless to say, he was calling the moves. 😆
