I've had to deal with that in the past. First off - Is the poster going to be seen up close or at a distance, is it possible to render a smaller image and increase the size in post?
The alternative would be to render it to a file so it doesn't take up all the memory whilst rendering.

Hi Robert, thank you for your reply.
It will be inside a presentation centre, so yes it will be seen relatively close.
What would be the settings to render to a file?
      Cheers

    • Sketchup V-Ray output limits?

      Good afternoon everyone,
I have been asked to create a rendering that is 68 inches wide and 144 inches high.
This is much bigger than I am used to making, so when I input the numbers in the V-Ray output, then hit render, this window shows up, and then nothing else happens.

Please let me know if anyone has faced similar problems and come up with any solutions!

If it helps, I am using
      -27" iMac
      -OSX 10.11.2
      -Sketchup 2016
      -V-Ray 2.00.26494

      Cheers,

Did you try to remove all textures/materials with Material Tools or another similar extension?

No i just deleted them all one by one. About 50 materials, so it didn't take that long.

    • RE: Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

      Hi Andy,
      thanks for all your help.
I guess the default material issue was a bit of a curveball for me, because every other time I rendered a model with default material, it didn't appear washed out. Oh well, thank you.

Now i just have to figure out why "building light cache" is taking forever. Perhaps the problem is related to the displacement map fiasco that I hopefully just solved.
I will let you know, if you're willing to help anymore.

    • RE: Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

      Here is some supplementary tests.

      I deleted all materials completely.
With the surfaces having sketchup's default material and V-ray's default settings, the scene looks extremely washed out. Moreover, the default material seems as though it is being emissive!
      DEFAULT.jpg

I then activated the override material option, and the scene seems like there is no lighting issue, which leads me to believe there is a problem with my default material.
      DEFAULT CLAY.jpg

I applied a fresh grey material to the floor and walls, and again, it doesn't look there is a lighting issue.
      DEFAULT GRAY.jpg

And zooming in, I no longer see an unknown displacement map.

So it looks like I solved the displacement issue, for the time being. However, am I to assume there is a problem with my default material? If so, how do i resolve this?

    • RE: Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

      Andy,
I checked my entire model, and sub-groups, all have the default sketchup material.
I even exploded and re-grouped the elements causing me grief. Put freshly created materials on the surfaces, and I still have this random displacement map.
I even exploded the floor group and placed it outside of any group, and STILL with the same result.
      FLOOR1.jpg

I am almost ready to completely start over new. Delete all materials and start fresh.
This would be a HUGE loss of time, however, if it needs to happen then there is no other alternative.

    • RE: Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

So. I tried rendering again with no furnishings. After hours of waiting for the light cache to build (not even getting to the halfway point), I gave up and put a simple gray material in place of the wood floor.
Upon rendering, i noticed there was some strange unkown map on it! View attached "FLOOR".
      FLOOR.jpg

I also noticed, when i moved to another level, this map seemed to be all over my model for some reason! See attached "FLOOR TEST" and "CEILING TEST".

      CEILING TEST.jpg

This is quite odd, when I looked at said materials, I couldn't find this tile/shingle map anywhere!

      @rspierenburg
Thank you for the consideration Robert, however I have all rights to say I am frustrated. Did I fly off the handlebars and say this forum is no good and I never get help? No, i simply said I was frustrated. And by replying to a similar post, I hoped to prompt the community that I was having the same difficulties, and I could be notified when and if anybody replied to this post instead of mine. This is a great community forum and I was just covering my bases.

    • RE: Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

      Hi Rob,
      thank you for your reply.
I immediately assumed it was displacement in materials as well. So when I turned off all the furnishings etc, the only material (with displacement) that was left would be the wood floor. I even switched that material to default, and I got the same result. It took forever to get through the "building light cache" part of the render.
Which then made me think maybe it isn't a material issue?
I can try to render the scene again with materials, but as I mentioned before, I have done renderings in other models with the exact same materials and components and never had to wait so long for the light cache to build.

    • Sketchup V-Ray Building Light Cache issue

      Good afternoon everyone,

I have been struggling with a render and cannot for the life of me figure out why.
I created a model of a townhome complex, and have furnished one single floor of one unit with components and materials I have never had issues with before.
With all of my V-ray settings at sub-default quality, the rendering process takes hours and hours to even build the light cache.
So I had the idea to remove the ceiling (upper floor) to let the sun in, and this sped up the rendering process to almost no time at all. But, obviously not my intention to show a ceiling-less room!

My model is only 115mb, not that big considering I have rendered much bigger models in much less time.
I even removed ALL furnishings and polygon-heavy elements until my model was only 7mb, but still, with the ceiling on, V-ray could NOT get past building the light cache.

When I activate the override material mode, with ceiling on, the render whips right through it, and no issue (please view attachment). When I turn materials back on, again, it struggles though building the light cache.

This is a very confusing issue for me, and any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
If you would like to see my settings, just let me know which ones you would like to see and i will provide it.

      Please help!
      Regards

      James

Hmm yes you'd definitely think as an advanced SU user I would be able to, but here we are...
It is not in preferences-extensions either.
Looking online i see that Solar North is a plug-in, a plug-in that I never installed, and also is not appearing in my plug-ins manager.

      Please somebody help me!

Scroll down until you'll find my posts in that thread. This is the way I do it, and it works for me, but you are at the mercy of your map. The gray values in the map, dictates where and how strong your reflection is happen.
      Cheers.

I tested it out. The bump must make the rendering slower (as the 3ds max tutorial seemed so much quicker and easier)
But still, having said that, this seems to work great, thank you so much for your help.

    • VRAY Reflection Mapping

      Hi there everyone,
I am following a tutorial about how to make a wood board material with a slight reflection using a reflection map. Because the tutorial is based in 3DS MAX, and i am using sketchup, there seems to be a subtle but key difference.
No matter what i do, i cannot quite grasp where to correctly put my reflection map. There seems to be so many different places.
Does somebody know the right way to do this in Sketchup VRay?
      Thank you

      Good morning everyone,
I am trying to place a pile of nails into a sketchup model.
Is there a plugin that can place a nail component into a random or scattered bunch?
