    • How to make "measurements" window default to inches?

In the bottom right hand corner is the little measurement window. When working in feet/inches i'd prefer to be able to continue to input data in feet and inches, or simply inches, but would prefer the display (when using the measuring tape for instance) to always default to inches to save me the calculation in my head of converting feet to inches.

      For instance... instead of showing
      1' 9 5/8"

      the display would read...

      21 5/8"

      Did that all make sense?
Is there an option to make this display in only inches?

    • Please help me fill/color curved area?

I'm trying to fill and color, to match the rest in black, the curved space that is currently empty. I'm also not able to fill one white panel with color.

Is there a more elegant way of filling that curved space than just filling it with ever increasingly small triangles until I paint myself into an ugly vacant corner that I must leave open?

      Thanks so much.

Ok, did I finally wear out my welcome with this post? Am I so bone stupid that I'm just getting ignored?

Would anyone simply try this with a single line segment in a new model and get back to me with the, no doubt, four neuron maximum instructions on what I'm doing wrong?

    • RE: Why does my bottom info bar disappear?

Ok, I believe it is the ctrl function. For some reason this is really doing an end run around my logic skills. And if you ever watched the program, you'd know that that's pretty much all I got going for me. So pray for me here.

"select point of edge to measure from. CTRL = toggle create guides. Enter value to resize model."

I drew a line. Pressing CTRL places or eliminates the "plus" sign next to the cursor.
Beginning without the "plus" sign, I drag the cursor and when I next I next click, the plus sign appears. I enter a value and am asked If I wish to resize the model.

Beginning with the plus sign, I drag the cursor to a point, still have the plus marker, click, enter a value and enter, and get a reference dot at that value. Perfect. Figured it out!

However... I go back to the beginning of the line, make sure that I have the plus sign next to the cursor, drag to a point, still have the plus marker, enter a value and enter, and am now asked if I wish to resize the model. I did it exactly the same as I had the previous time, but this time sketchup thinks I want to resize?

      View > Toolbars > Measurements

Thank you. But I hadn't overlooked that. I've never quite understood what that option is for. There is a default measurement window at the bottom right of the screen already in Sketchup Pro 7. When I enable "toolbars > measurements" all it does is move that window to the left hand corner of a whole new info bar that eats up more of my screen space. Does it provide any more use than the measurement box that is already in the lower right hand corner?

In any case, the missing measurement box (bottom right default one) turned out to be a silly oversight. You were correct. I had a slightly minimized window. It was so slightly minimized that only the bottome was missing, so I overlooked that possibility. Each time I reopened a new model, Sketchup continued to open a minimized window just like the last model closed. I clicked on the "Restore Down" button and it fixed it. Funny, I never noticed that it was called "restore down". Always thought it was just restore.

      @unknownuser said:

As for the Tape Measure tool, if you simply measure by clicking on endpoints, that's all you get is a measurement. If you type a value after clicking on two points in succession, and then hit Enter, you'll start the resizing process. If you don't want to resize, don't type. Does that help?

The majority of the time that I am typing a value is to establish a point. If I wish to establish a point exactly 3.25 inches along a given line, I will begin the measurement along that line, enter 3.25, and then enter, most of the time the little dot marker will appear at exacty 3.25 inches along that line. The scale of the entire model is not changed. Occasionally however, for reasons that I'm never entirely sure of, instead of establishing a point along the line, I will be asked instead if I wish to rescale the entirety.

I was under the impression that you had to drag the measurement tool from one previously established point, to another previously established point, (both ends of a given segment in the model) in order to summon the resizing feature. But often it just seems to randomly pop up even when trying to simply establish a new meausurement point in the model.

So I must be pressing some keys out of sequence somehow. I just can't figure what I'm doing wrong. In most cases, I simply retry exactly what I had tried, initiating the measurement along a line and then typing in 3.25, and it puts a point exactly 3.25 inches along the line instead of asking if I wish to resize the entire model like it did just the moment previous. Seems like I'm doing the exact same thing, but I must be mistaken.

    • Why does my bottom info bar disappear?

Just a minor irritation. I can't seem to find out what buttom I'm accidentally clicking to lose this.
The window bar at the bottom of the screen that shows meausurement among other things. Often it will just dissappear seemingly randomly and I can't figure out how to get it back.

Another minor annoyance is that when using the measuring tool, I never seem able to learn just what sequence enables the "rescale the entire?" or just take a measurement.

    • RE: How to "snap to" objects from point to point

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I've tried them all, with mixed success. It still is the case that in Sketchup, the move function used alone, even with making component or using x-ray mode, is very very clunky. I would be very suprise if there were not some plug in available that allows simply what is described here for general work in Sketchup
      http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=153767

...beggars the imagination that this is not in the regular tool set. I just downloaded the "mirror" plugin and it also blows my mind that this is not in the regular tool set. It saves soooooo much repeat work on most objects and it's very clean. It's a good example of a great refinement on the "move" function. Previously I'd cut paste rotate and attempt to ham hand the two together with the move funtion. It never quite meshed. With the "mirror" plugin it's just select, click the plugin, select three points, enter and viola. Perfection.

Why this can't be done object to object is curious indeed.

    • How to "snap to" objects from point to point

The following is EXACTLY what I've been trying to do with objects in Sketchup.
      http://sketchup.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=153767
But it describes a feature in "Building Maker". There does not appear to be
a "snapping" button in my menu controls for basic sketchup pro 7.1
I can open the file in Layout, and Layout indeed has that snap object icon, but I still could
not figure out how to use it in this manner and could find no tutorial on the web. I'd also
prefer to simply be able to do this in Sketchup as I'm working.

How do I accomplish this? I'd just like to select one point on one object,
another point on a second object, and simply have them join at precisely this point.

Trying to select the leg, and then using the move function only gets it 'close' but it is never quite right.

On the other hand - it'd be great if we could have a plugin repository where we could search, install, uninstall plugins from within SketchUp.

      That would be VERY nice.

This is one thing that I'm really pleased with so far with this "fat" (by linux standards) Linux distro called Mint. There is a wealth of such repositories within the installation for navigating and installing with a minimum of fuss many many utilities. Usually when a Linux tool is discovered on the web I just have to open the "package manager" in Mint and type the name of it into search and it's already there. I just click to download and automatically install it and start using it.

This plugin for Sketchup has been the first real baffler for me, but it turned out to be a pretty simple fix after all. I'm finding that that's usually the case with Mint. Half a dozen hard-core linux people will give you daunting command line instructions but eventually someone will come along to tell you that the solution is actually only two clicks away.

      Hello Chris.

I second every accolade in this thread. What a great tool! I read and read tutorials until I was quite certain not to embarrass myself before asking how to accomplish this. It's such a fundamental need that I was certain that I was overlooking the obvious somewhere. When I was directed to your plugin I was pretty astonished that Sketchup does not do this natively somehow. Thank you VERY much for your work.

I asked some time back about why subsequent versions of Sketchup don't incorporate more of the most useful tools developed by users. I recall that it was said to be a 'good question'. Do you happen to know? It's not as if it would add too significantly to the size of the download.

      Perpendicular Face Tools
Description: Three Perpendicular Face tools to help create faces perpendicular to the end of lines.
Usage: Activate it at Plugins>Chris Fullmer Tools>Perpendicular Line Tools. Change the size of squares by entering a new dimension into the measuerments box after the face has been created. Change the radius of circles by entering "12s" for 12 sides into the measurements box. To use the custom face tool, create your face flat on the groundplane. The script attempts to line up the x axis as the bottom edge of the face.

New Video for v1.1 (outdated for 1.2. Doesn't show that you can hit the up arrow key to rotate).

      Chris

      v0.1 beta
      v1.0 Updates:

      • The original face now explodes upon exiting the custom face tool.
      • Added support so that faces will stay oriented with a flat edge on the horizontal plane.
      • Holding ctrl while creating a face will over-ride the flat horizontal feature and revert back to the default SketchUp "Arbitrary Rotation".
      • Now faces can be added anywhere to a line - on the endpoint (existing feature), in the middle of a line, or on a vertex of 2 lines. The vertex of 3 lines is not supported.

      v1.1

      • Attempted to fix some bugs with the custom face tool. It only was working once in a while. And only if the blue face was up. Now it is slightly better. But there are still times when it will need to be rotated 180degrees after it is placed. sorry ๐Ÿ˜ž
      • Added a Toolbar!
        v1.2
      • Changed so that circles default to have their vertices on top and bottom, not edges. Odd segmented circles will have the vertex on the bottom and a flat edge on the top (I think).
      • The up arrow key rotates the faces after they have been placed. Squares will rotate 45 degrees. Circles will rotate the angle needed to alternate between having an edge or a vertex on the top. Custom faces rotate in 90 degree increments. Helpful for fixing faces that are oriented 180 off, or that were drawn on the wrong axis.

That looks like the animal! I'm still quite a beginner here.

I assumed that meant at the top of that page. It brings me right back to the thread. So I searched for Plugins in the menu options once Sketchup was opened. I could not find it. Then I tried simply downloading it from the attachement in the post above, but to make matters worse I'm just getting initiated into Linux Mint and find it a bit difficult to plug in things in .zip format.

Can this be plugged in directly from the sketchup menus?

    • Command for drawing circle perpendicular to any one line?

Trying to get functions to inference off of a line/object that is different from the main axis is very frustrating.
Is there a way, other than making components each time, to simply force a circle to inference off of the x/y/z placement of any line while ignoring the original axes? Why doesn't selecting the end point and then manuevering the cursor over the line a few times suggest your intentions as in other functions in sketchup?

The most common instance of this is when line is drawn, for instance, 30 degrees angled from one axis of the main drawing. Even worse if it's angled at a second axis. Trying to make that line into a shaft, by drawing a circle at one end of it and then extruding is a extremely frustrating. The circle never wants to inference off of the line. I'm usually reduced to drawing elaborate planes at 90 degree angles from the end of the line and inferencing the circle off of that.

This also applies to most of other departures from the end of that line. Drawing a 90 degree line from it. Placing the compass at the end of it, etc. All the tools want to inference off of the main drawing's x/y/z.

I would have thought that simply selecting the end of the line, and then moving the cursor point up and down the line a couple of times to reacquaint Sketchup with the new axes would be sufficient. But that seems to do nothing at all.

Thank you very much for that. I checked into draftsight but turned out to be uninterested in putting time into learning a 2d program. Guess I'll try Wine and an install of SK 8 before I give up entirely. I make a lot of use of the export functions to share ideas, but generally am able to find a number of workarounds for sharing files anyway if one or another does not work.

I searched for threads and info and it's a little old. Has any progress been made?

I really, really, like Linux Mint so far. It's extremely quick and agile and fun to tweak. Just about everything so far is plug/play. Wireless setups, printers, external wifi card, etc. Amazing that coming from winxp and expecting the worst, it turned out (so far) to be even more user friendly.

I was using Sketchup 8 professional and am hoping that my learning curve can still be put to use. I'd rather not go back to XP just to use Sketchup. It might be a matter of finding another simple CAD program for Linux rather than go back to XP.

Any updates on running Sketchup in Linux?

      Installing SU8 doesn't affect or uninstall SU7.
So you are safe to install SU8 Free so you can re-save SU8 .skp files into SU7 files.

I installed vers 8 and viewed my buddy's file. Later I opened one of my projects, done in vers 7 pro, and my installation of vers 8 has apparantly applied itself to all my previous version 7 files/projects.
They open in vers 8 free version, and display the warning....

      http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/yy303/svejkovat/eighttoseven.jpg

So now what? Drag all my files over to the Sketchup 7 icon and open them thusly? I thought the new installation was not supposed to affect su7. Why are my old files automatically defaulting to su8 to open?
