Trying to open an 8.0.3117 file in 7.0.8657.... Can I?
-
I've got Sketchup Pro 7.0.8657 installed. I recommended sketchup to a friend so that we could share ideas. He downloaded the latest free version. He sent me a file. I got the following error message.
Am I not able to import work from future versions of sketchup?
-
if you are running v7 and he has v8 then you are unable to open v8 .skp files. ask him to 'save as' v7 before sharing.
or download v8
-
When you say download version 8 are you suggesting purchasing an update? I really didn't want to have to do that. I'm perfectly happy with what I have. If I download version 8 free version will it update my previous version sufficient to view files? This seems kind of strange.

Installing SU8 doesn't affect or uninstall SU7.
So you are safe to install SU8 Free so you can re-save SU8 .skp files into SU7 files. -
frascati, If you think about it, how can SUv7 know how to read the newer SUv8 file. You must ask your friend to "save as" SUv7 file before sending it to you. Or you could install SUv8 free, open his file with it, and "save as" SUv7. SUv7 and SUv8 can both run on the same machine at the same time.

So what's different with SU 8 that the file system changed? Something to do with Solid Tools, perhaps?

Older SketchUp versions have never been able to open SKP files made with a newer version so it can't have anything to do with Solid Tools. There has always been an option to Save a Copy As... to an older version back to V3 now on V8.
-
New tools do not mean incompatibility. If you save a SU 8 file back in v.7 format, it won't register a "solid" as such but the geometry will get through.
The same way, if you save a dynamic component in v.6 format, the geometry will still be there - you just cannot finger it.
It is always just the (new) functionality that cannot be translated.

Thank you very much guys. That clears things up.

Ok, Rather than ask the other guy to "save as" sketchup 7 file (which I should have done) I decided a better option would be to download version 8 so that I could at least view his files. I am not ready to upgrade from version 7 pro to version 8 pro.
After this assurance

They open in vers 8 free version, and display the warning....So now what? Drag all my files over to the Sketchup 7 icon and open them thusly? I thought the new installation was not supposed to affect su7. Why are my old files automatically defaulting to su8 to open?
-
This is simply a warning that if you now save the file (without saving back as v.7), you will not be able to open it in v,7.
If you are worried, here is a brand new plugin to help you save as 7 (or previous):

When you click on either su v7, or su v8 to start, your system will recall that that as the default su. Because of installing su v8, your system is starting with that version. All you need do is to start up with su v7 for your system to default to su v7 thereafter.
