RE: [Plugin] RichSection V0.5.8 UPDATED march 2015
Awesome plugin pgarmin. It is exactly what i've been looking for as an automated approach to the methodology in my book "Construction Documents Using SketchUp Pro & LayOut". There are one or two small refinements I would like to see that will really make this singPlease email me: paul @ viewsion.ie to let me know if you're interested in co-authoring a publication. Thanks.

URGENT: Need Italian speaking SketchUp trainer
Hi,
Viewsion Virtual Environments have been asked by a multinational company to roll out SU Pro to a number of centres in Europe. We need:
One SketchUp trainer Italian speaker for in-house training.
Where: in Milan, Italy-
Duration: One day.
When: January 2014It is possible we will need to employ both for further customisation of course material etc. We can pay a good hourly rate for this.
The trainer(s) need to be able to liaise with me on explaining the use of a bespoke database for components, naming objects, and other standards that must be delivered in the training. I may travel to the training location for the session.
All expenses paid and a good daily rate of pay, depending on level of experience.
Please contact paul@viewsion.ie ASAP for further details. If you know anyone who might be interested please let them know. Thanks.

URGENT: Need Italian and German speaking SketchUp trainers
Hi,
Viewsion Virtual Environments have been asked by a multinational company to roll out SU Pro to a number of centres in Europe. We need min. 2 x SketchUp trainers (the more experienced in SU and training the better.)
One SketchUp trainer Italian speaker for in-house training.
Where: in Milan, Italy-
Duration: One day.
When: January 2014One SketchUp trainer German speaker for in-house training.
Where: Ratingen, Germany-
Duration: One day.
When: January 2014It is possible we will need to employ both for further customisation of course material etc. We can pay a good hourly rate for this.
Both trainers need to be able to liaise with me on explaining the use of a bespoke database for components, naming objects, and other standards that must be delivered in the training. I will likely travel to both locations for the training sessions.
All expenses paid and a good daily rate of pay, depending on level of experience.
Please contact paul@viewsion.ie ASAP for further details. If you know anyone who might be interested please let them know. Thanks.

RE: Construction & Working Drawings - Discussion
SketchUp 2013 vindicates the argument of those who have championed the idea of creating Construction Documents in SU/ LO.
Please forgive the blatant advertising- For anyone who is interested in finding out how to set up SU/ LO for Con Docs please take a look at my book-
By the way, Nick Sonder's approach is both harmonious with, and adds nicely to the workflow detailed in this workbook. In the forthcoming 2013 edition I will be referring to the technical innovations that Nick has popularised (If that's OK with you Nick? Obviously I would giving all due credit.)
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting and working with Nick in Boulder last October:)

RE: SketchUp 2013 ;)
It looks like this release of SU is there to lay the foundations for the integration into the Trimble suite of products which makes complete sense.
Those not involved in the construction industry can't appreciate the need for SU (or similar tools) to take on the Autodesk high priced monopoly that is seriously hampering the evolution of IT in that sector and in education. That will come to an end somehow and SU just might do it.
I am patient with this release but will have high expectations for the next release to show real feature add-ons.

RE: 2 ways of creating construction drawings in Layout
@Edson and everyone here, thanks for talking about this topic. I wish to have an open mind regarding other approaches to this problem that might be helpful (or better??)
I agree with your points on this topic. The pros and cons are correct.
However, there will always remain the need to deal with CAD-like detail in some way- whether it is dealt with in a pure CAD programme or in LayOut. I admire the efforts to take detail into the 3D realm and this is a worthy alternative that should be encouraged and advanced, e.g. Like Robertson & Walsh Design http://sketchupdate.blogspot.ie/2010/10/sketchup-pro-case-study.html Personally while I love creating neat documents in small/ medium doses, I hate the huge effort it takes to create construction documents which is why I created this methodology in the first place

While I love efficiency, there can be an over-reliance on automation for an area that requires very close and careful monitoring and this is where I saw many of the problems that were evident in Autodesk AEC (now dead) and the overly complicated tools in some other packages. One source told me about a certain softwaRe that attempted to create a good workflow for construction documentation and didn't quite achieve it (due to the fact that it was a complete disaster- not my opinion)
Tools should definitely be developed to assist in the area of 2D documentation. The world is tired of sad ol CAD http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=1a97699ccccefb478d83901d4c57a251

RE: A new home for SketchUp
I am hopeful this will be a good move. Construction is such an important agenda for SketchUp. Since being bought by Google It has not been their main agenda- understandably so, because It is not a core competency of theirs. However, the Google brand did wonders for growing the user base. I think SketchUp is now a standalone brand that has instilled itself in the consciousness of millions worldwide, just like the Google brand did.
I hope that Trimble will give stronger marketing support to Authorised Training Centres. It really needs more muscle (investment) to be successful.
Now if Trimble would just sponsor some humorous SketchUp videos to help push their new acquisition.... I wonder who they could get to do that.......

RE: BIM SKETCHUP
IFC ALERT: The UK is now.hosting an official gov. database for BIM components. If anyone wants to see SU as a serious player in the BIM market, and if it is possible to produce IFC compatible SU components this is our chance

Any thoughts?

RE: [Plugin] bim-tools 0.13.4(june 22, 2015)
Sorry, I can't get this to work on Mac.... bummer.
I had to edit the objectlibrary.rb file to insert "/btobjects.rb" instead of "\btobjects.rb", and this allowed the plugin to load without an error. However, all I got was a dialogue that didn't seem to work. Did I miss anything? Check out the image below.

RE: [Plugin] SketchUpBIM: Building Modeling made easy!
I love the idea of this plugin- It's really great and I have been waiting for someone to produce something like this for a long time. I know I should be learning how to program SketchUp myself but I haven't had the time.
I recommend uninstalling the previous version of sketchupbim before installing. I had problems first time I installed the new v1.5
This is looking really good!
I wonder if anyone had thoughts about the comparison between this plugin and Revit. Here is a document I created ages ago on the topic. http://bit.ly/c6BWnE
Probably needs some updating now. Your suggestions are most welcome.

RE: What is wrong with this GE Model?
Thanks a lot guys.
I fixed the reversed faces. Thanks for that plugin TIG. Re the roof: I tried making it roof-like in an earlier version of the model but this was one of the rejected ones. I decided to play it safe. I might try doing a more detailed model later. I just want to get something sorted for now.
I wish Google Earth would try explaining problems better. I can't understand why they won't write a line or two of text just to explain what the problem is, especially when they can see that you have put some effort in... : ( e.g. I didn't know reversed faces was even an issue- this is not explained anywhere- or is it?)
Hope it works this time anyway.. Cheers.

What is wrong with this GE Model?
Hi All,
This model: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=3dfba19c1ce67c33571b94ddc3bad4ca&result=4, created by Le Corb (not me) was rejected by GE twice. LC is NOT happy! He is a pain in the ass to deal with...
I don't know what is wrong with it. Can someone tell me?
Also, does anyone have a contact in GE who can talk to me directly about modelling?- I am trying to start a large GE project in Cork City Ireland.
Thanks

The big benefits of SketchUp are its ease of use, affordability, massive user base and thriving community of developers.
- Amen to that!

@fionmacool - There doesn't seem to be a lot on your site right now. Are you familiar with Secom's IFC2SKP (http://www.ohyeahcad.com/ifc2skp/index.php) plugin?
- Yes I forgot about that one- I have included it now thanks. In relation to the amount of content- I don't have a lot of time to put into it, but the site is just meant to be a means of directing people towards content.
@unknownuser said:
I'm a bit intrigued as to why you had such a negative reaction to what sound to me like very useful ideas. I'm reminded of the famous quote by Henry Ford, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."
- I am reminded almost every time I mention something interesting that there are vast numbers of people who don't want interesting things to happen.
@unknownuser said:
@mitcorb - I think you have made some very valid points about the formalized input in Revit. It concerns me that the inflexibility of the tools might get in the way of elegant design. I do think SketchUp needs to evolve in terms of its geometry handling because working with large models can be painful, but I don't think any SU BIM solution need be anywhere near as complex as Revit. As far as I have seen, Autodesk buy applications that threaten their business model, then screw them up in an attempt to integrate and rationalise functionality with their existing products.
- The business model of high cost software cannot survive. Unless legislation like #SOPA, #PIPA, or #ACTA get enacted and destroy the internet.
