RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP
kenny,
thanks for the file. i will give it a go as soon as i have a free time.

RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP
mike,
you are probably right. perhaps we need a more demanding file to test our machines.
your setup is probably not as bad as you thought. not all computers would pass through it like yours did.

RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP
macbook pro 15", 4 MB RAM, graphics card NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB
perfect up to scene 8, transitions became slightly choppy after that, bounding box from scene 9 but orbiting was fluent up to 11, refresh time very fast (a second or so)
-
RE: Request for Test Hardware SKP
iMac 20" Core 2 Duo, 3Mb RAM, 128 Mb ATI RadeonX 1600
i would say it performed well overall: scene 9 would go into bounding box, but would refresh inmediatly after orbiting, 10 the same but a little choppy at orbiting, 11 some lag (about 2 seconds)

RE: New 17" MacBook Pro is sweet
i've tested my macbook pro core 2 duo (4MB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT) using james's file. i am afraid it did not fare as well as his lappy.

Animation time scene 1-10 approx 1 minute.
(No shadows) -
Orbiting with no shadows 1-10 no major problem, except for some lag to start orbiting. the ornament on the column disappears while orbiting but reapperas almost immediately.
3.(Shadows on) no shadows appear while orbiting, not even on scene 1. it takes some time for them to appear after the orbiting stops.
- Shadows disappear and reappear after an increasing amout of time when orbiting, from 2s on scene 1 to 14s on scene 10.
However, there was no jerkyness in any of the tests.
i wonder if any of you mac users would know of a way o speeding up those results. increasing RAM and replacing the graphics card is out of the question, of course.
edit: the RAM mentioned above is 4GB, not 4MB.

i would like to try alan's file too. perhaps we should ask him for it.

RE: Some free 3D modeling/CAD programs of interest
Lewis,
I am probably getting this wrong but are you suggesting we give up SU because of a bad move on the part of Google? If that is what is implied by your suggestion of "replacements", what do we do with all the ours spent in front of the screen in order to master SU? Do we start over and leave behind all the expertise accumulated over months or, for some, years?
I sincerely hope I am wrong. I'd better get some sleep.
Best regards.

RE: New 17" MacBook Pro is sweet
hi mike,
a couple weeks ago i received a similar machine. mine is the 15" macbook pro to which i added enough RAM to complete its max of 4Gb. my GC is also the NVIDIA 256 Mb. i did not go for the 17" as i plan to take it to school and on the road quite often. I also bought a 20" apple cinema display so that i can work with two screens when at my office.
do i have to tell you i just love it? even though i had bought a 20" imac four months ago, this is by far the best machine i ever had.
enjoy your lappy!

it feels great to be a part of this.
cheers to all.

RE: A nice Bluetooth Mouse for laptops
mike,
a beautiful piece of design indeed. i got apple's mightymouse with my macbook pro and am very happy with it. i am a sucker for good design and in that respect apple is unbeatable. when it dies out i may consider going for this one.

Old forum vs new forum
edit: this was originally posted way back in may, 2007.
this morning i visited the forum at google groups. in the afternoon i had some doubts about section planes and looked it up at the almost dead SU forum.
what a difference in quality! the difference between the two is abysmal: one looks like kid's stuff, the other offers all sorts of advice on simple and/or complex matters at the cost of typing a couple of words in the search box.
i hope we can recover something like what is still there.
cheers to all.

So far my favorite space has been Edson's; large open room with lots of table space, and a wall of books selves. I have so many books it's not even funny. That's what I'm looking for whey I buy a home this year. Space for my computer, film gear, books, animation disk, and my flat file.
justin, thanks for the compliment. just to make you envious of me, both side (party) walls are lined with shelves for books. this is a house i built for myself in 2006. the studio space faces a small back garden.
regards.

I think what he means Edson, is the beige phone, with a pink hue...
I don't think it too effeminate...
oh, that one. let me tell you something curious about that phone. it is almost an antique: it is the phone i used during the time i lived in philadelphia. i brought it back with me when i returned home in the far away year of 1983!!! can you belive that?

What's with the pink telephone Edson, is that for lady use only ?
images play tricks on us, james. what you thought is a phone is actually a bunch of post-its sitting under a pack of kleenexes. the real phone is to the left of my keyboard.
cheers.

RE: Show us your SU Machine
my machine is an imac core 2 duo, 2.16 ghz, 3mb ram, ati radeon1600 128mb card, as you can see on the top image. since i am at it, meet my studio. the imac is at the background. at the foreground you see my wife's pc notebook, two emacs g4 and an imac g3. i am expecting any moment a macbook pro which will become my SU machine.
cheers.

RE: CarLoft Designs Apartments With Individual Car-Parking on Ba
@gaieus said:
We have underground car parks under the building I have my flat and the parking spaces are not individually closed either (or course only people having a lot there can open the parking gate).
No problem with it - my car never has been stolen (maybe because I don't even own a car )this is the usual way in brasil wherever there is a private parking facility (under or on the ground). i have never known of a building's parking garage in which the parking spaces are enclosed individually.
