New 17" MacBook Pro is sweet

I got delivery of the new 17" MacBook Pro last week with
the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAMI find SU easier to work with in the 1920 x 1200 screen,
added to this the possibility of 4Gb of Ram, not yet
installed, it should move along very well.Can't recommend it enough

It seems quick enough for me but again I tend
to split models up quite a bit these days so
as not to load the machine. -

If I remember correctly Alan had a SketchUp file that
tested the power of any computer. I think it was 1000
columns or something like that. Does anyone have this
file handy? It would be a good one to use as a standard

a couple weeks ago i received a similar machine. mine is the 15" macbook pro to which i added enough RAM to complete its max of 4Gb. my GC is also the NVIDIA 256 Mb. i did not go for the 17" as i plan to take it to school and on the road quite often. I also bought a 20" apple cinema display so that i can work with two screens when at my office.
do i have to tell you i just love it? even though i had bought a 20" imac four months ago, this is by far the best machine i ever had.

Mike, thanks for the info. I use my MacPro (2gb ram, 3ghz dual duos) with the 23" cimema display and I love it. There probably a memory upgrade lurking in my near future.
I bought a white MacBook (2.16ghz speed, 2gb ram), just this past June to take with me out of the house - with Bootcamp. SU works "ok" under both OS's. On the Mac side, I have to turn Fast Feedback off regardless. To see the selection box for a left-to-right or right-to-left drag select, I also have to turn off hardware acceleration. It's annoying. And, the screen is small, but it works. Havent used SU under the Windows boot enough to remember the settings - probably the same.
I'll most likely end up getting a 17" MacBook Pro. I'll deck that thing out with VM FusionWare so I can install Windows XP and one of the Linux distrubtions and run all three at once. Probably 4GB as well. Gotta save my quarters first. Thanks for the report!

i've tested my macbook pro core 2 duo (4MB RAM, GeForce 8600M GT) using james's file. i am afraid it did not fare as well as his lappy.

Animation time scene 1-10 approx 1 minute.
(No shadows) -
Orbiting with no shadows 1-10 no major problem, except for some lag to start orbiting. the ornament on the column disappears while orbiting but reapperas almost immediately.
3.(Shadows on) no shadows appear while orbiting, not even on scene 1. it takes some time for them to appear after the orbiting stops.
- Shadows disappear and reappear after an increasing amout of time when orbiting, from 2s on scene 1 to 14s on scene 10.
However, there was no jerkyness in any of the tests.
i wonder if any of you mac users would know of a way o speeding up those results. increasing RAM and replacing the graphics card is out of the question, of course.
edit: the RAM mentioned above is 4GB, not 4MB.

James, on your last model -- scene forty orbits in real time, about 2 seconds for textures to reappear. Never got a wireframe.
Dual Core 3.4 Ghz
nVidia quadro fx 1500, 256 Mb
2 Gb ram
Windows XPWill try tommorow on a 3.8 Ghz single processor laptop.

Does anyome know if SketchUp will be taking full advantage
of Dual CPUs? -
I like to leave the MacBook Pro on permanently. I understand
that its the best way to run Macs as downloads and maintenance
can be carried out over night, I think!Its also a fact that laptops tend to heat up a bit when under
pressure, more so than desktops. I thought one way to keep
things cool would be to have some control over the fan.I located a utility called Fan Control, it does what it
says. Okay if not on mains the battery life is effected but most
of my time spent on the laptop when plugged in, so no problem.
Also it can be adjusted in on the move.The links for Fan Control, a free application is,
