i noticed you are also triyng to edit the subdivided mesh. unless you just converted it to "plain mesh" from the right click menu, editing the smoothed mesh is pointless, because when you toggle off sub-d, it will revert back to the original control cage.. and all of the editing done directly on the limit mesh will be lost.

Thanks πŸ˜„ ... i found out that myself. The hard way.

    • RE: Introducing SUbD for SketchUp...

After a quick play with SUbD, i noticed that one feature would be GREAT to have:

-some sort of "selection sets" for creased edges/vertices. When selecting more edges and crease them together, maybe i want to come back to same set to adjust them further. Every time I have to manually select them all, which is a bit of a pain when there are many. But if there would be a way to select all edges that were creased in the same set, would be awesome.

How I am thinking it can be accomplished: using attribute dictionaries, for example. Giving a sort of unique ID to all edges that were creased simultaneously, so when the selection tool looks for which edges to select, it will filter them out by this unique id.

I already saw that the creased edges are displayed in a "red" color, which red value varies depending on how creased it is. So, i am assuming those edges are already recognized... maybe selecting them as a "set" would be a easy step to add.

Why not use the Interactive Joint Push Pull by Fredo6 ? πŸ˜‰

i use it... but my question was about SUbD pushpull, to understand what is its purpose.
      Now I got my answer.

it's not intended to work like "joint push pull", so if the face is triangulated, it actually pulls only the single triangle that you pick.
this is intendended to quickly extrude loops in some first stage.. the difference beetween this and regular pushpull is that, if you hold down ctrl it creates a new loop without generating an interior face (which would prevent sub-d to work).

Oh, I got it now. Is like the Artisan's PushPull (i already use Artisan). Ok then, I have two redundant tools πŸ˜„ Got it.
      Thanks

How does the PushPull for Quads works? And where is it intended to work? I tried it and... the result was something that I didn't quite expected. And what i could have achieved with the normal push-pull, if i would have applied on a single triangle.

Please see attached. Also notice that hovering the tool highlighted the quad, but pushing only affected one triangle in the subdivided quad.

    • RE: [Plugin] CleanUp

After the SUbD rising and other quad-based modeling helpers in SketchUp, maybe some fixes to the CleanUp plugin would be in order. And frankly, I would be very happy if we would have some fixes (i may even send you a cookie πŸ’š )

      So, what I'm thinking:
1.option to cleanup with preserving the quads (there are still plenty of faces to merge and messy geometry to clean) - as now it will clean absolutely everything.
2.add the possibility to save presets. There are already some presets in the menu, but many times special combinations of settings are required. Would be awesome to save those as presets for quick use (and even adding kb shortcuts to them, if is not too much to ask πŸ˜„)

      Thank you very much.

It's a good plugin for batch editing units, but it also edits the text. Linked dims in other units than model units maybe are just not possible,

Thank you for the link. It's useful.

    • Any way to have dimensions with MM and Inches together?

Just wondering if is possible to have dimension lines in the same model that are NOT in the model's units.
As an example, I needed to put some measurements in inches on a model built in millimeters (beside other dimensions that were in mm). Of course, there is always the possibility to edit the dimension line text, but I was wondering if it's possible to have it and keep the dimension linked.

    • Quick way to properly UV map cylinder section?

I am trying to apply a texture on a curved surface that is not a complete cylinder. I was using a UV plugin that offers Cylindrical Mapping, but the issue is that it will try to map 360 every time, even if my geometry does not completely revolve.

My texture is a label, so it should fit exactly on the surface. Any help appreciated.

Have you tried Advanced Camera Tools that ship with SU?

I have one extension that let you adjust the rotation of the camera quite precisely:
      http://sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=tt_camera

But it doesn't do much more - but when you need to make your camera not be level with the ground it's quite useful.

      thanks, i'll give it a spin ! πŸ’š

    • RE: [Plugin] Angular Dimension

I understand your point... and it makes perfect sense.
What does NOT make sense is that on linear dimensions you can actually see where the flaw is (because user can choose a much greater precision), the issue here is that for angles you can't see it, if the error goes beyond 3 decimals, thus impossible to correct.
So, if I see ~30.000 I have no idea how I should correct it. Is it 29.9999, or is it 30.0001 ? Hence the confusion I was talking about.
Maybe to add it as option in a simple setting menu? Kind of keypress switch? Select the tool and in the information bar of sketchup to have a quick description "Press Ctrl to enable (or disable) round-up feature". As you say, in many instances this can be really useful, as it will tell the user there is a problem (even if the problem can't be seen with accuracy). But in other cases, if I see three zeroes after decimal point, I may be just happy to see it rounded.

Anyway, currently I just edit the text, but when I have to edit several angular dimensions, is a bit frustrating.

      Just a suggestion.

    • RE: [Plugin] Angular Dimension

Or maybe it was too close to some other geometry and it snapped to it... whatever cause it was, it rounded it to some value that was askew from 30.000. And this is precisely why I got this detail into attention: because such approximations can happen. And unless the precise value can be displayed, there is no reason to provide the ~ symbol. Rounding all values to three decimal precision would be the most elegant way to solve this.

      @slbaumgartner said:

You are mistaking the display format for a limit on calculation precision. The units settings in the model info affect how many decimal places SketchUp will display. But it is still perfectly possible to calculate or set a value to more places. For example, if the value is 30.0002 degrees, it will display as ~30.000, telling you that the actual value was rounded based on the display units. This is the same as occurs for all SketchUp units.

Actually I am not mistaking it. I know what you want to say. But I also know that programmatically the "~" can be removed by feeding in a "rounded" value to 3 decimals. So, if SU returns 30.0001 degrees and the plugin will round it to 30.000, then it will NOT display the "~". Of course, this will mean losing the fourth decimal precision... but wait: I can't use the fourth decimal, even if it's there. So, technically there is no lose at all, because SU won't even display the fourth decimal in degrees value.
Is just for best displaying properties... to lead to less confusion.
As an example, I just rotated a guide line with PRECISELY 30 degrees, but this tool shown me ~30 deg. Meaning that SU was not able to make the rotation to 30 degrees sharp (due its implicit precision limitation, which is fine). But again, the value that made for "~" to appear was somewhere far beyond the decimal point (maybe fourth/fifth decimal), which is completely not important. So, if the plugin just rounds-up the value to 3 decimals and dumps everything else, I believe we are in a common sense "territory".

Is it any specific workflow in working with quads in SU?
There are some plugins that claim to do some "specific type of quads" - compatible with SUbD, or any other workflows... what does it means? What makes those quads compatible, as opposed to others?

I used SketchUp for a very long time, but I never tried to use a "specific" workflow, I just did it how I found best. Now I have a weird sensation that I skipped something...

    • RE: [Plugin] Angular Dimension

About angle precision... indeed, it uses SU precision, but sometimes even with three decimals, it still shows the ~ symbol. Maybe it should be suppressed if the angle precision goes beyond three decimals, because it is really confusing when you see ~30.000 degrees, for example. It would be somewhat understandable to see ~30.00 when the angle is 30.001 degrees, but as the precision cannot go beyond 3 decimals, there is no point to keep the "~" in that case.

    • Best plugin to precisely control camera?

I'm in need of a plugin that allows precise rotation/tilt/translation of the camera, preferably with precise input. I believe there was one from smustard... very vague memories about.
If it still exists, or there is some other better plugin that allows precise camera control, i would appreciate a hint about it.

      Thanks!
