RE: Another Z-fighting question
@hakken said:
- Is it possible that faces that are near each other, not on top of each other, but only close to each other, can be Z-fighting? I see through some surfaces to other surfaces that are close to the surfaces in the forefront, most often when I'm zoomed out quite a bit. Sometimes some images that are a good 2 - 3" in front of a surface can disappear altogether.
It's hard to answer this one without seeing a model. You can sometimes get z-fighting like flicker if faces are very close together though.
@hakken said:
- Does an image count as a surface when imported into a drawing? I've laid many images on top of surfaces I've created and then get my flickering affect. Should I be putting these images in as textures only? I hope not, as some of these images need to exist on their own (have transparent backgrounds, etc.)
Yes an image is a face within a group. You should be adding these as textures if they are to be placed on an existing face. You may need to do some Photoshop work if you are trying to place an image with an alpha channel onto an existing texture image.
If you post the model, I'm sure you'll get help from lots of folks.

Thieves really piss me off. Two weeks ago (two days after my Birthday) some punk stole my vintage custom cruiser bicycle out from the side of my friends apartment during a party!!!

RE: Is this acceptable in professional software?
Thanks kwistenbiebel and pbacot (and all who've thrown support into this discussion)!
I(we) do appreciate the feedback and don't ignore the grumblings of things that could obviously be better. I enjoy the forums and I am here as a favor to my team and my community (you guys!). (...in other words I'm active on this forum because I care about SketchUp and its users and personally want to help make improvements and stay in touch with what you all think is important. It's actually not part of my job at all to be present here, I do it because I want to.)
My feelings aren't hurt when people say bad things out of frustration either. I do my best to understand your perspective, and I do my best to explain our side when appropriate. I'm a professional who uses tons of different software programs to get my job(s) done, and I totally understand working around problems, or problems that get in my way, so your frustration is not lost on me. It's good to here what's important to you.
By the way, Layout is getting better everyday along side SketchUp and we really think it's going to be a great tool! ...especially if folks can learn to use it to help them pitch ideas to clients and get new gigs! That's our greatest hope...that you'll be able to say "I love using SketchUp everyday, and I love that Layout got me this great gig...where I get to use SketchUp/Layout/Style Builder everyday!" (I love Style Builder by the way!)
A lot of you met us at 3D Base Camp and I think you saw that we really, really, really care...that we really love SketchUp and Layout, warts and all, and we try hard to make it better for you guys everyday. Our dream job is to help you guys have your dream jobs!
So, keep the feedback coming (good and bad)and we'll keep working our tails off to make you happy to have SketchUp/Layout in your lives.
Cheers!

RE: Invalid key message when authorizing
Hi Matt, that's strange and sounds frustrating.. I'll talk to some folks and see what we can do. In the mean time, can you PM me your contact info so that I can forward that to the tech support folks and give them a heads up?
Thanks for working on this with me and being patient..we'll try to get you fixed straight away.

RE: Is this acceptable in professional software?
The problem occurs when the camera travels through a shadow. If you can fly the camera around while avoiding the shadows, you will avoid the problem. There are few tricks to this...you can turn off layers that would cast a shadow on the camera, as soon as they're out of view. You can use section cuts to remove sections of the building that would cast a shadow. You can turn shadows off for certain scenes. You can create shadows by tracing the original shadow cast border, then select the texture, copy it, and darken the copied version...this makes a "permanent" shadow but it is a trick of the trade if you need shadows and want to "bake" them into your model.
As far as the problem itself, I can't talk about it, but I can tell you it's not as simple as you think. We're not happy about it either, but it is not in our control.
Hope those tricks help.

RE: Invalid key message when authorizing
Hi Matt, what platform are you on (Mac - Win)?
You're correct, the authorization number is the same as the Key.
I would try just copying and pasting making sure you do not have any spaces selected. If that doesn't work, then quit relaunch and try typing the serial number and Authorization (key) numbers in by hand.
Let us know how it goes.

RE: Is their an individual in you? doubt it.
My post was in response to a request from Goon:
- "To Craig I would love to hear a story about what it is like to really trust a tire at 170 plus."
Bytor - Praise indeed, big thanks! ...Durante Hapke - he pops, he cracks, righteous. That flavor..bring it!
Slide and catch, she growls, she sings for more...I give more.. she's danger...in her eyes...I'm home.

RE: Is their an individual in you? doubt it.
There is a moment where conscious time freezes and elongates at once, pulling you headlong into the deepest reaches of your spirit and your brightest moment of clarity. Precisely before this, your body struggles to transcend natural forces, the pressure in your head swelling till you can no longer hear the howling wind or the wail of carbon brakes biting into fiery iron rotors, as the iphone sized contact patch promises to be true to your request to scrub off 100+ mph while hurdling past the point of no return. With the front suspension near bottom, the screaming front tire buries itself into the unseen microcosms beneath the seemingly smooth pavement, you play both sides of the blade as you ask the machine to transition from 100% braking to 100% cornering without losing 1% to either. The suspension never releases as the braking force, pulling you forward like magnetically controlled finish to a roller coaster ride, lends your weight to the forces of inertia, the baton passed on the brink of disaster. This is where the surreal becomes your den; the bubble-gum sticky tires start to tear away and catch again in a deceptively quick cyclic drama that has you aiming farther to the inside of the apex and praying that this contradiction will carry you wide towards your intended mark. Just then you begin to feel it....the machine is fully loaded and fully leaned...the micro-cyclic tear and catch that your sticky hot slicks are playing out becomes a symphony of visceral feedback and the machine, stiffly sprung and tightly wound, begins to sing to you in the same way a tuning fork will vibrate simply a pure tone that has your senses shutting out all other input in hopes of procuring this one magic song. Experiencing this moment is part of what racing's all about, the machine literally singing to you as you then slingshot out of the corner like David's rock towards the Goliath that is the next straight-away and your competition.
Despite the times where this goes all wrong and you're thrown mercilessly down the track, left injured and doubting your strength and your skills, you come back to experience this moment of clarity and in some way allow it to define you....risking much for an experience most will never attain.
The psychology behind that is much like this thread and how you've orchestrated a brazen challenge, callously berated those unaware of the tactics and then dangled the reward of acceptance or even reverence to those who play the game. I've watched this, warnings to others aside, and have found it to be an interesting foray into the psychology of online group relationships.
It takes all kinds to make a community, so it is what it is and we either adapt and learn, or pack up our toys and go home. I was never a pack up and go home kinda guy.
Cheers,

RE: Is their an individual in you? doubt it.
My friends, he's just a pwning griefer....a goon. He hides his actual identity and then goes to online communities to cause grief and sling insults because it gives him jollies. Like I said, he's a Something Awful, Kyanka wannabe. Very sad.
He's here to cause grief and it makes him feel better about himself.
Ignore him and he loses.
We're all here to help each other, and he is not. Don't let him rile you up...Second Life is where his kind usually gets his jollies, but he's decided to pick on a bunch of folks here.

RE: Problem with repeated crashing of Sketchup when rendering
Hi ghasapidis,
what version of IRender are you using? Have you contacted them to see if there is an update, or if they know about this problem?
Have you experimented with Open GL settings in SketchUp or on the machine?
Have you checked to make sure your video graphics drivers are the latest?
I know, a bunch of questions, but this may help figure out what you've tried.
Cheers,

RE: Some models I'm using in a game
These look great! I love the low poly objects with good textures! This is how we do 3D buildings for Google Earth...just like video game design where the textures can help tell more than half the story, and helps to keep the models light!
Good work, welcome to SCF and thanks for sharing! Please keep us apprised of your work!

RE: Color/materials suddenly goes darker?
That colored face that appears when Shadows is turned on is a duplicate face...just delete it and you'll see the same face below, but white. Then retexture it.
I guess I'm not sure what the expected brightness of the colors should be... do you have a before and after shot?
