    • RE: Glowing street lights?

well, don't i feel foolish. i ended up pulling the spotlight down from the bulb and got the effect that i wanted more or less, still with some tweaking to do:
      nightwithglow.jpg
i guess i hadn't pulled the light far enough out of the bulb previously. not sure why it wasn't just coming through the bulb glass from the interior, i suppose there was too much reflection inside? i turned up the subdivs and samples on the irmap, thomthom - that helped with the shadowy artifacts - thank you!

below is what i mentioned regarding the blotches from the emissive bulb material. i had it turned up to at least 100 intensity to achieve a decent amount of light - but that was probably way too high. with irmap quality improved the blotches of light are less intense than before, but you get the gist from this render:

      thanks!

    • Glowing street lights?

      folks,

i'm at the beginning of a night render with a few street lamps. while i think i have the intensity of the street lights down, i would like to simulate the fact that light is actually coming from the street lights - ie. i want them to glow (and now they are not - see below). i'm currently using spotlights hidden inside the fixtures. i first tried making the lamp glass emissive, but it continually caused light blotches all over the building behind. if i try to combine the emissive material with the spotlights, the spot lights don't render at all (even if they're outside the bulb). so my questions are:

      1. is there anyway to use emissive materials and vray lights together? (the ideal solution)
      2. does anyone have ideas on how to make a non-emissive bulb glass that might filter the light from the source as in reality?
      3. and on a different note - any thoughts on how to avoid the shadowy blotches circled on the image? (i guess those give it a little grit, but maybe its too formulaic)

      Thanks for your thoughts.

      Hi Fredo -

I am having the same problem as Didier with bugsplats. I am able to make geometry selections, but the moment I attempt a loft by spline, SU crashes.

This occurs only on PC for me - the plugin works fine on Mac (both platforms have the latest version of SU)

i like thomthom's palette and graphic style much better than that of skp. i think skp should adopt his set instead of him adopting the ugliness of skp!

      Didier's Hide Faces/Edges plug-in is one method:

As a user of Sketchup from its inception all i can say is WOW! about this plug-in. I gotta quick question though...Is there any easy way to hide all the linework on the blades of grass in sketchup with out rendering and without turning off all linework in the model? When you get alot it all turns black due to the linework. Anyone have any ideas?

      Thanks

      Dear Mr. Paulo Wer:

That is some fantastically lush and beautiful grass you have created! What is the probability that you would like to share your technique and component/material with the fur-worshipping masses?

ThomThom - the divide face plugin is amazing. i'm redrawing thousands of parcels from the 1960s in a city and this has really just made tedious work about 10 times faster. you're a god!

man, it's a sweet model. it looks like an exact copy of the photo, textures, proportions, and all! great stuff.

    • RE: Brick Shop Render

nice! the lighting and textures are so soft. it really has a good feel. not overly digital. what did you render it with?

the 3d people are a nice touch too - my only thought is that the scene looks a little crowded, maybe 2 or 3 would do the trick?

    • RE: Refletive Non-sense!!!

i'm not an expert with vray by any means, but i've experienced similar artifact problems using emissive materials as light sources. why don't you just use a vray light for each can and scratch the emissive material all together?

    • .3ds import to 3DSMax scale issue?

I'm having trouble navigating around my sketchup model in Max once it's been imported.

The original model was exported as a .3ds file, imported to Max with cameras. the image renders fine with mental ray, but i can't navigate around the model with any precision to tweak it. when i attempt to pan, orbit, or zoom with my mouse, the slightest movement sends me shooting away from the model. i tried to scale the model up in max, but that doesn't seem to change the navigation problems.

i've modelled in skp for a while now, but am new to max, so it's probably something silly but elusive. any thoughts? is there a different export method that i could use in skp to fix the problem?

      thanks,
      pete

    • RE: Vray materials in sketchup

      Orgelf -

The VRay materials for that site only work with vray for 3DS Max - not sketchup. ASGVIS has a plugin for Max that will convert them to .vismat files, though it is rarely worth the time. If the material you downloaded comes with a diffuse map it is easier just to make your own version of the material in sketchup.

    • Subdivide and Smooth missing icons?

      Hi all,

After using Subdivide and Smooth without a problem for a few months, its icons suddenly do not display on the toolbar. The toolbar appears in its normal position but with blank buttons where the icons should be. The buttons still display names when hovering over them, and the plug-in works fine except for the icon problem. I have also installed a number of rubies lately, and assume that the problem arose as a result of conflict with another script....

Any thoughts on how to remedy this?

      Many thanks,
      Pete

ps: I am running SKP 7 on MacOS10.5
