Anyone having trouble buying the upgrade?
I keep getting a message that I have entered incorrect licence info.
I entered the licence info by copying and pasting from the licence info that was emailed to me by Google when I upgraded to V8.

Confusing and poorly thought out to say the least.

      What I did:
      I paid for the upgrade.
They sent me license info, etc. by email.
      I downloaded SketchUp 2013 Pro
Then I opened the program and went to Help > License, etc and inputted my new license info and that worked.

I have no idea what the page you get when you try to upgrade through the website is supposed to do. It wouldn't take my old license info, my new license info, nothing.

Click on Reset in the toolbars window. That should put the button back.

      (1) Open the "Toolbars..." dialog.

      (2) Select the "Getting Started" toolbar.

      (3) Press the "Reset" button.

      (4) Hold the "CTRL" keyboard key when you drag buttons so they copy instead of move.

      Thanks all. That works.

      Toolbar question:
Where are the toolbar icons stored?
There is a tool on the Getting Started Toolbar (Send to Layout)that I tried to drag to another toolbar but I dropped it between toolbars accidentally and it disappeared. How can I get it back?

      Not impressed.
I've entered my SU8 serial number, the serial number I just got after paying for an upgrade, my name, my company name - nothing works. I've never had any problems upgrading to the next version of SketchUp - it's always been seamless, easy, no thought required.
This on the other hand is confusing - what are they asking for - the license from my SU8 version? The new license they just sent me? Doesn't matter because neither one works.
So, the first appearance of Trimble SketchUp and - no improvements (according to people who successfully downloaded the program) and a mess of an upgrade process.

EDIT: btw, i filled the beta form, all i got was a strange id error and no way to redo it.

Me too. Did you buy V-Ray from Chaos or Asgviz? I got an 'orderid' error but no way out of it. Frustrated.

    • Bad vector problem

Often when I set a viewport as vector, the camera position changes. If I double click to go into model mode, the view reverts to the correct position but then once I click out of model mode, the view shifts again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Useful, even necessary. But I wait anxiously for the first low cost 3D room scanners. Hopefully in the next year or two.

No, they're not placebos. You take two in the morning and in a couple of hours you've become a world class rendering artist. Really, it's true.

just discovered a DOH feature of the selection tool..
if you drag a selection rectangle from left to right it selects only the items completely wrapped in the rectangle, but if you drag the rectangle from right toward left, then also the items wich are only touched (but not fully wrapped) by the rectangle are selected.. never noticed it before.. 😲

This is important to know also because it's one of the few things that tends to be consistent across most 3D software applications.

    • RE: CNC query re SketchUp

      Some comments -

The cleaner the model, the better the CNC output. The CNC software neeeds to know what every line is; if the line is nothing (i.e. a stray line) the software won't know what to do with it.

Are the wheel and the spokes being done separately? If not, if they're being cut as one object, delete the geometry that is the spoke going into the rim.

For the wheel - as Tom says, get rid of that extra spoke perimeter. Then re-do the inner circles (axle nuts?) as complete circles at a higher chord count than you presently have so they don't look so faceted.

For your spokes - go to camera > parallel projection > top then do a region select and get rid of the middle face. You need to have a model that is all 'exterior', nothing inside.

Question - is the CNC doing just straight 2D paths on a 3 head machine or are they doing the whole 3D object including the groove on the outside of the rim? If they're just running a 2D path you can export this as a 2D DXF. Cleaning up the DXF will be a lot simpler than doing the whole 3D model.

      Good luck

Really like the phrase 'repo bot' - yes, exactly that.
I'll bet Mossad would know how to do this.

Maybe a small software could be designed that you would incorporate into your drawings and, if a client refused to pay, you could send off an email which, once opened, would search the client's computer for your files and delete them.

surely that would be illegal, no?

      (as in.. super illegal?)

[edit- or.. i don't really know.. i guess youre saying something like a repo bot that reclaims files instead of things like cars]

      Side comment:
What I greatly dislike about Autocad is the inclusion of the zooms and pans in the history/memory stack. As far as I know, you cannot exclude this completely.

I think SketchUp is unusual in this regard in that it's Undo and Redo function addresses changes to the model, not changes to the viewing position. Which is much, much better than the way AutoCAD handles it.

      AdamB -

As you're clearly very knowledgeable about this maybe you could help us understand how SketchUp is different from other applications. In modo for instance you can select an item, a polygon for instance, and then type shift-A and modo zooms to that item and seems to re-set itself so you can enlarge as much as you want without the clipping problems SketchUp has. The zoom function in AutoCAD locks up pretty regularly, then you have to type in Regen after which the Zoom functions again and you can zoom in to whatever depth you want.

Does anyone here use a forum app for Android? I often read posts on my phone but I access the forum through my browser which means I have to continually size and re-size the page.

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.
