    • RE: Using YouTube for tutorials

      I downloaded Camtasia 5 - It looks like a good tool for making videos.

      However, the information for what format and resolution is a little sparse

      1. YouTube says:

      @unknownuser said:

      All you need to do is continue uploading the highest quality video you have available. The quality of the uploaded video combined with individual viewers' bandwidth will determine if the video is displayed at "Higher Quality."

      Not satisfied with that answer? Still need specific information? YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG. Here are a few things that may work well for you:

      * MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
      * MP3 audio
      * Video resolution: 480x360 or higher
      * Frame Rate: 24fps or higher

      1. Camtasia says:

      @unknownuser said:

      Choose "Custom Production Settings" and produce to AVI.

      1. Keep the default TSCC codec for video compression and audio compression

      2. Produce your video at 480x360 (or the closest you can get to this, keeping "Maintain aspect Ratio" checked.)

      3. upload to youTube and wait for reprocessing to complete.

      ***Currently, to view your uploaded video at high quality, you will need to add the following code to the end of your video URL before sending the link to anyone:

      &fmt=18

      example:

      before:

      after:

      It looks like 640 x 480 might be a good resolution - letting YouTube convert it as desired.
      It will be a little fuzzy, but will work better for tutorials uploaded to the SCF.

      Has anyone else had any experiences yet on resolution?

      If it isn't already a Forum policy not to allow hints on how to beat software copy protection, I think it should be.

      I think the comment on the previous post about how to override the software copy protection should be removed and the author should be warned not to do this type of thing.

      (As a person who sells software for a living, I would just as soon that software users paid for the software, and that reputable sites, such as SCF, did not promote stealing software.)

      I'll take a look at Camtasia (5?)

      Are there limits on resolution or length of YouTube videos?

      Has anybody created a YouTube tutorial? If so, can you provide a link.
      (I've been watching basecamp videos all weekend, but I think they did a little more work to combine live action with screen shots.)

      Thanks Gaieus,

      This was posted on the SketchUp SDK Forum. I reposted it here and put a link in the SDK Forum to this SUC Forum thread - since I think he will get better responses to queries here.

    • VCB not displaying.

      Are you running SketchUp in maximized, full screen mode?

      The Value Control Box only shows upwhen SketchUp is larger than a certain size.

      I am posting this query on the SketchUp Community Forums. You may get more help there.

      I would like to make some movies, with voice over, for YouTube based on a SketchUp screen.

      What software are people using for this?

      What movie formats?

      Any other hints or guidelines?

      I am able to ping the ip but telnet still tells me it is unable to connect.

      I get a connection submission using the "T1" link you sent TBD so any ideas??

      You should be able to telnet with port 25 though (which is the default email port)

      Thanks to all who are trying this for me.

      Tavi,

      Thanks for finding the on-line port scanner - I had been looking for one for hours last night.

      However, when I use it, it fails:

      66.7.183.229 isn't responding on port 23 (telnet).

      66.7.183.229 isn't responding on port 587 (submission).

      And I was only able to use it three times.

    • Help with ISP problem

      My network provider and I are trying to work out a problem.

      Try this for me:

      telnet 66.17.141.96 587

      Also, if someone would try it from a Mac it would be useful.

      My ISP Provider says that when he does it it connects properly
      (enter quit if telnet starts)

      For me I always get an error.
      (I have tried 4 different machines with 3 different network accesses)

      (66.17.141.96 is the URL for mail.renderplus.com. 587 is an alternate SMTP port which they claim they have opened)

      Could you also try:

      telnet mail.estreet.net 587

      (This is the ISP's email port. Which they can access and I cannot)

      Thanks,

      Al

    • Are there any theatre folks out there?

      I am posting this query from the IRender nXt forum here, so that other SketchUp users can respond.

      @unknownuser said:

      I am curious, are there any other theatre folks out there using Sketch Up? I have been using SU for about 4 yrs. now and won't use anything else for my designs. I like it so much that for the past 3 yrs. I have been doing workshops at KS High School Thespians Theatre Conference & ACTF Regional Conference on the basics and just speading the word about SU and people are loving it.

    • RE: Question

      RPS 3D PDF can display faces and images but cannot display text and dimensioning.

      You will have to place you text and dimensioning as "images" in the 3D PDF in order to be able to see them.

    • How to set the view in PDF

      @unknownuser said:

      Hi,

      I am trialling your 3D PDF creator and am wondering is there any way to change the point of rotation? for example I want to be able to send the attached PDF to a client and have them take a close look at the connections at either end of the frame but this is very difficult if we can't move the rotation point to the end of the frame.

      You can create some view frames in SketchUp, and these will be carried into the 3D PDF.

      Otherwise, you could add some "dummy" geometry and see if it changes how the scene rotates.

    • RE: I need an OEM Plug in

      mkprofiles ,

      Render Plus RpReports is probably the best solution for you. Most of the customization required is already build into RpReports - the ability to define attributes, calculations, etc. But we can also create whatever custom capabilities are needed.

      I will contact you directly for more details.

      @remus said:

      If you just want to reverse individual faces you could always just set 'reverse face' as a shortcut...

      Thanks to everyone for the replies.

      The nice thing about the reverse face 'tool' is that it reverses faces with one click per face - rather than having to select the face and then hit the shortcut, and that it can reverse faces inside of components and blocks without having to open them for edit.

      Also, the tool can reverse the material definitions so that the face appears the same after reversal. (Usually you are in Monochrome mode when reversing faces, and don't notice that existing materials get reversed as well.)

    • Reverse Face Script

      I've been searching for the reverse face script, and I can't seem to find it.

      (A tool which lets you point to faces to reverse them rather than having to select and right click them)

      Can some one point me in the right direction.

      Also, does it automatically work inside components and groups, or do you have to open the component/group for edit?

    • RE: Lighting and shadows

      IRender has implemented most of the SketchUp lights so that they cast shadows in the scene without your having to specify them as lights and assign wattages to them.

      Just place the light from the SketchUp component and click render.

    • RE: Multi Processors in Ruby

      I suspect I'm just going to have to try this when I get a chance.

      One of the reasons that a CAD system like SketchUp has a hard time using multiple cores, is that you can only assign tasks to multiple cores when there are two (or more) tasks you can do at the same time.

      In our rendering engine, we can process rendering for one horizontal scan line in one task, while we are processing pixels in the next scan line in another task.

      A similar example in a CAD system would be for reading through the drawing.

      For instance if you were searching for something in the model which took an appreciable amount of time, you could search half the entities in one task and the other half in another task.

      But this gets much trickier if you are searching and modifying at the same time, because now you would be modifying the drawing, and this might make things difficult for the other task (if anything internally gets changes or moved).

      I was just interested in:

      1. Is it possible to access the sketchup database separately from multiple tasks in Ruby

      2. If so, can we think of any task which takes a lot of time which we could speed up.

      Of course, it would be even better if the SketchUp development team would try to see what things they could multi-task. But, while we are waiting, perhaps the "ruby" crew could think of some ideas.
