I'm trying to set up an Azure Virtual machine to Run SketchUp on.

When I run SketchUp, I get this error message:

*The following errors were found when launching SketchUp:

      • Hardware acceleration is unsupported or has been disabled on your graphics card. SketchUp requires that you use a hardware accelerated graphics card.

Unfortunately, these errors will prevent SketchUp from running. Updating your graphics card drivers might fix the problem.

See this Help Center article for more information.*

      Looking around, I found this:

      https://forums.sketchup.com/t/running-sketchup-2017-via-vpn-launching-issue…

Workaround: Start Sketchup on the host computer and leave it running. Sketchup 2017 will then work remotely via Remote Desktop. This is presumably because they only perform the video card check when the program starts.
Re: other questions about configs: Yes, other operating systems and remote/VNC software can produce varied results. I'm only speaking about connecting to a Windows machine using the Microsoft Remote Desktop client software. (Note: The client operating system is not important here. I regularly connect to my remote Windows machine using both Mac and PC.)

But it didn't work for me.

Has anyone been able to run SketchUp on an Azure Virtual machine?

Perhaps I just need to select a machine with a GPU???

The mirror, and other items in the image which show highlights or reflections were made reflective by right-clicking on the material in SketchUp, and selecting a default reflection:

And some lights were placed on the ceiling. (Some small lights were also placed inside of the candles)

ArielVision then create a Photorealistic image by processing all the effects of lights and reflection and creating a rendered image.

    • Looking for someone to create models and make renderings

We are looking for someone to create videos to help people use our SketchUp Rendering Extension.

Typically you will choose a feature of the Extension, create or modify one our your own models, or a 3D Warehouse model, to utilize the feature- for example adding a ceiling light to demonstrate lighting - and then create a video by capturing the screen as you set parameters for the light and render it, adding and editing voice overs for the video.

The videos will be placed on YouTube and will typically be 1 to 4 minutes long.

Here is a typical video of this type:

    • RE: SketchUpAPI.dll - 32 and 64 bit

      We are creating two .exe's

SketchUpReader32.exe and SketchUpReader64.exe, and placing them in the same folder.

The .exe's automatically load SketchUpAPI.dll from the same folder, but we can't put both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of the DLL in the same folder, because they have the same name.

    • SketchUpAPI.dll - 32 and 64 bit

We have a 32 bit and a 64 bit version of our .exe which uses SketchUpAPI.dll.

SketchUp provides both a 32 bit and a 64 bit version of SketchUpAPI.dll, but they have the same name.

We would like to put both of our .EXEs (32 bit and 64 bit) in the same folder, but have them load different versions of SketchUpAPI.dll.

We tried renaming the 64 but dll, but that didn't work

Any ideas on how we could have both .exes (and all the support files) in the same folder?

    • Rendering Tip - Select IES Patterns

Many SketchUp rendering packages provide easy access to 30 standard IES Patterns which you can apply to lights.

Here are samples of 6 of them.

      http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/f/fe/IesSixExamples.jpg

You can easily select one of these patterns and render your model using it.

IES light files are created by many major lighting manufacturers and can be downloaded freely from their sites.

    • Create More Realistic Renderings with IES Profiles

      http://wiki.renderplus.com/images/thumb/c/c6/IesExample.jpg/600px-IesExample.jpg

IES Light Profiles are illumination standards developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, the recognized authority on illumination. The profiles enhance IRender nXt renderings with light distribution that is more accurate. IRender nXt includes 30 IES Presets and many lighting manufacturers provide IES profiles for their fixtures.

Images of IES Presets and a more comprehensive description is available: IES_Lights

    • IES Light Patterns

If you have been using standard IES Light Patterns with your SketchUp Rendering Engine, you have probably been using a chart like this one to select the light pattern. (Most rendering packages seem to offer these same 30 patterns)

      https://cgiknowledge.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/ies_lights_light_image.jpg

We took all the patterns and rendered them with a SketchUp model, with some materials and colors to give you a better idea of what the patterns looked like in a more realistic setting.

Actually it was about 5000 seperate usages - so it could be just 200 users 25 times each

    • Crack Versions

We noticed that several thousand usages of IRender nXt were all coming from the same email address.

A little research determined that IRender nXt was available on a crack site. (This means we have graduated to the big leagues - like AutoDesk and Microsoft: 😉

A little more research revealed that the cracks were using 16 different license numbers for the last 24 months - but all registered with the same emails address and User Name. Which means they have found a way to crack our licensing scheme as well.

The "good news" is that the 1,000s of people using our software would probably never have paid for it, so we didn't really lose any money.

At first we were considering ways to close the loopholes. (There are a few things we can do). But we also remembered, that whatever we try, the software crackers are better and smarter than we are, and they probably have automatic programs to find and defeat anything we try. Also if Microsoft and AutoDesk cannot defeat crackers, how can we hope to?

We considered logging on to the crack site to see what they offered, but of course, we are hesitant to register our own email address with a crack site.

Has anyone else run into this?

    • RE: Improvements since Trimble Takeover

"I'd guess much more than half architectural users still use AutoCAD."

We're trying to say that about half of the SketchUp architectural users also use AutoCAD.

Unfortunately, we often make our assumptions about the world while sitting in our bathtub (meaning completely uninformed).

One of the assumptions we make is that the vast majority of architects in the US are well established with AutoCAD - and that most of them have move to Revit, but that quite a few are using SketchUp for 3D modeling.

But that in other parts of the world where architecture is just emerging, many "new: architectural firms are just starting our with SketchUp, and out using AutoCAD at all.

As I say, this is an almost opinion with no information to back it up.

    • RE: Improvements since Trimble Takeover

      The question should have read:

      1. I used to argue that about 1/2 of SketchUp users in the architectural world also used AutoCAD. Do you think this is in the ballpark and/or do you think the ratio is rising or falling as time goes on?

In particular, in 2009, we surveyed a bunch of SketchUp users and asked "What 3D Modeling / CAD systems do you use?"

      The answers were:

      • SketchUp Pro 44.45%

      • SketchUp Free 52.44%

      • AutoCAD 41.18%

      • Revit 13.80%

      • Rhino 5.64%

(They were allowed to choose more than one)

This led me to believe that almost half of our clients use SketchUp Pro, and that a good proportion of our clients used AutoCAD or Revit as well. Leading me to believe that a lot of AutoCAD users also use SketchUp for their 3D models.

    • Improvements since Trimble Takeover

I am looking for opinions and/or informed opinions about changes in the SketchUp community since Trimble took over in 2012.

      1. I remember an announcement at SketchUp basecamp at about that time that SketchUp was logging about 3,000,000 users per week. Do you suspect that that number has been going up or down. (and/or do I remember it wrong?)

      2. SketchUp Free (Make) is no longer available for commercial use. Do you suspect that they are getting more Pro users because of that change?

      3. Have you seen more of a marketing push by Trimble to promote and sell SketchUp since Trimble took over?

      4. I used to argue that about 1/2 of SketchUp users in the architectural world also used SketchUp for 3D modelling. Do you think this is in the ballpark and/or do you think the ration is rising or falling as time goes on?

    • RE: Area class messing up .volume

It turns out the the other developer had defined a override to Length which returned a value of class Area when 2 lengths were multiplied.

We were multiplying the bounding box extrema to try to calculate an approximate volume if volume was not defined.

      if (entity.respond_to?(:volume)) rval = entity.volume else rval = bwidth * bdepth * bheight end#if

They plan to fix it, but I think I can coerce each "length" to a float before multiplying them:

      if (entity.respond_to?(:volume)) rval = entity.volume else rval = bwidth.to_f * bdepthto_f * bheightto_f end#if

Actually I will do this earlier when I get width from the bounding box
