the file association has been 'lost' by 'Finder' and a 'Alt + Right Click' >> 'Relaunch' on it's Dock Icon may fix this issue...
If not, 'Right Click' on one of .skp file and 'Get Info' >> 'Open With' [browse to SketchUp.app] + 'Change All'

Jeff,I need to develop the components of these models and get my students make them. I will try wireframe mode in top view, seems like a simple way to approach things.

I've been testing the new suSolid.rb http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=41289&p=367657&hilit=suSolid#p365992 and I find it's really powerful and fast.
there's are free and low cost versions.
I've only used the full version on a mac with SU-pro- but it's worth a play...
