We do have them set on every drawing. It would just be cool if we could make changes across all files. Like maybe an insertable LO file as an x-ref or something.

I just ran across this topic this morning, as I was having this same issue yesterday while drawing some building sections. I thought a hidden line in the plane of the section cut that was missing was causing the issue too. After playing with the model (unhiding the line) and trying, I found that the issue wasn't solved. After reading here, I went back and checked that no groups have textures.

Late last night, I came to the same conclusion as others have reached here. Include a third (for me) viewport to stack with my light and dark viewports for only 2d graphics. These would include faces to hide things beyond what I intend to show. Such as something touching the far end of a beam. Or things within a wall.

Question about stacking viewports though. If I stack my "2D Graphics" viewport on top, will its edge properties ovverride the properties of the cut edges of my main viewport? Or can you set a style with no edges, so that only faces are shown and the edge properties of a viewport below would be visible?

It is possible to link dimension lines to vector lines in LO (make sure sketchup renders to vector or hybrid in layout). Then click the dimensions on the vector lines.

I try to avoid this problem by never changing my view of the scene in SU before updating the scene. Then make sure your 'viewport' is on a layer which you keep locked as much as possible. This will stop your SU model moving around the page every time you update your scene to LO.

    Hope that makes sense/helps.

Thanks. I will give it a shot.

upgrading a mac? Are you sane? I heard it's perfect so no need for hardware changes.

I love imperfection so I use Windows... Linux should be better but no Sketchup.

I can tell you that, with windows, changing from a laptop with an nVidia 425M with 1Gb to a Titan X with 12 Gb, simply changed everything I knew about LO and SU.

I feel it's a different software, and though it has limitations, performance has increased so drastically I cannot conceive how I could cope with it.

It turns out that it has to do with geometry on layer 0. I was getting lazy and left a few items there and in fact my linework meant for the vector viewport was also still on layer 0. However, even after tidying up the remedy didn't show in Layout on 'model update' but until I'd restarted Layout.
Thanks for getting me over the hump again, guys.

In a isometric perspective, done correctly, we should apply a reduction in every edge. That reduction is the same for the 3 edges, and it's 0.816, that you can calculate why, but it's that number. In LayOut, simply prepare a custom scale with that number (1.0 mm = 0.8166 mm). It exist differences between an isometric sketch (no reduction) and a isometric perspective (0.816 reduction on every edge). Now you can print and mesure correctly your isometric drawings.

    I hope it helps someone.

While you're creating the rectangle, or immediately after creating it, use the arrow keys - up & down - to change the curvature.

There's no way to make rounded-corner polygons other than drawing them by hand as Richard suggests.

    Hi Nick and Charlie,

I think I ultimately figured out what was happening. I am not 100% certain it will not happen again, but we shall see.

For now, please consider this resolved, and thank you for your responses.

In reference to Sonder's suggestion, it works. At least with LO 2016 linked to SKP 2015. Viewport was set to raster.

First, there are no pages in SketchUp. Create scenes in SketchUp that display what you want to show in LayOut as viewports. When you send the SU file to LayOut, it will open with the last saved scene. Change the viewport to the desired scene in the SketchUp inspector window in LayOut. If you need to change the size, you can drag the edges or corners of the viewport. Note that Shift and Alt impact what happens when you are dragging the edges of the viewport. Play with them to see first hand.

You can set a scale for a viewport if the scene in SketchUp was made with the camera set to Parallel Projection.

Do not open viewports to change the view with Orbit, Pan, or Zoom and do not set the view in the SketchUp inspector window. Doing so will disconnect the viewport from the original scene. Then scene-specific changes you make in SketchUp will not get translated to the LO file.

You're right. There's no sliders in LO for shadow weight.

Even just turning on Shadows or adjusting the time and date in LO results in the modified scene for the viewport. So if you make the scene show as modified by changing the style or something in LO and then go back to SU to adjust the weight of the shadows, the change won't show in LO because you've already disconnected the viewport from the original SketchUp scene.

Make style changes and shadow settings in SU and leave the viewport tied to the original scene and you won't have any problems.

It isn't good practice to create modified scenes in LayOut.

I have a similar issue - Layout does not remember the Page Setup dialogue boxes at all. I have A3 landscape set as the default in Preferences, which works fine, but if I then open Page Setup, select my A3 printer and A3 paper, save and close the file, when I reopen it those settings have reverted back to the default. This can’t be the correct behaviour surely?

Update - I see that it uses the default printer settings from System Prefs - I have an A4 laser as the default. If I change that to my A3 laser, it shows the correct settings in Page Setup. That doesn’t excuse it as bad behaviour though, in my view.

I get this same problem. My solution is just to turn google drive off while I'm working and then just let it sync at the end of the day. Google drive won't let you save whilst it syncs the file.

Dropbox does appear to let you sync though and has a lot less problem. So you could switch over.

Some of these are pretty great! I didn't have any idea you could assign a texture in SketchUp layers. Switching from Shaded With Textures to Hidden Line + Color By Layer you can have two ways of describing a surface. Very cool for representing a realistic material along with a traditional hatch!

Looks like this might be in the next D'oh! book. Right, Rich? 😄

True. You can change the scale of the drawings. I don't know what font size you are using but it will probably still be legible.
Contractors often reduce-print our drawings to half size (as-is), especially for large projects with lots of sheets, and it doesn't seem to bother anyone. Our usual small print is 10pt.
