SketchUp 2018 Video Card

Could it be something in the updates for windows 10?
It might be since historically there has been problems with and Windows 10, but I've mainly seen (online, on this forum and on SketchUp official forum) problems with selecting, etc.

If the problem started all of the sudden and you had not had that issue previously I would check the driver for your graphics card. You may need to roll it back if windows updated it and your performance dropped.
Another thing that can happen with 3d vegetation is you can run across a component that is poorly designed and bogs everything down. Even if it just that one tree or whatever. I had a 3d birch tree just this morning that was so heavy it caused sluggishness all by its lonesome. I run a gtx 1080 and do not have issues unless there is a bad driver update or bad 3d component.

The nature of your vegetation can have a massive impact on a model, I have a 2m hedge (can't remember where I got it) that will cripple any model as soon as I place it yet the premium trees from here will have little (ok maybe not little but the model is still workable) impact when used.
Here's a Twilight rendered image of a heavily planted model, it takes longer to open than normal but it's not excessive and once open I can move around quickly enough.
I'm using a MacBookPro i7/16Gb with a Radion R9 M370x, I'm using Windows 10 via a bootcamp partition as I can't stand SU on MacOS

I typically look at the files sizes before I add them to one of my files and I try and keep them around a mg as much as I can. I typically do interiors and close up of exteriors at home, so I typically don’t need a forest of items. As I said before it’s not been a problem in the past. I’ll have to look at the drivers tonight when I get back home, I don’t remember if I have updated them recently or not.
Would the video card cause SketchUp to perform poorly or as stated earlier the CPU of the computer could be a problem?
Thanks

I planning a new pc now for SU and Lumion and a 1070 is my intended card, I’d be very very surprised if it was a bottleneck. Drivers could be (and frequently are) an issue, it wouldn’t do any harm to install the latest set from Nvidia. I’d also go through the process of removing all existing drivers 1st as they have been know to not properly update leaving you with a mix of old and new files littered throughout your system.
It seems from this post (https://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59195) that the nvidia drivers can do a complete uninstall during the install process. -
Thanks Paul,
I'll try it and let you know what happens.I will also look at the 1070 as a possibility for my next move. I use Podium and lately V Ray 3.6 to render. -
You said you currently have a GTX1070 in your original post.
-
oh, yea
Im at work and doing 2 things at once and didn't catch that.. -
I ran the uninstall/install and so far things are fine in the short time I had to play with my files.
FYI and for what its worth I ran the SKU check up before and after and i get the same message. Thanks Paul Russam and everyone for your help. 'lll let you know if there are still problems later.
-
GTX1070’s all come with 8Gb of memory so that’s an obvious bug in CheckUp.
-
IF you want to test your system then I suggest you try Passmark's performance test: https://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm
You can then compare your scores (cpu, video card etc) against other cards here:

CPU's: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ -
Thanks!
I'll give it a try.

Philw,
I got the same report when I started having problems with my ASUS GTX Titan X. And it has 12GB of GDDR5.
It started running sluggishly after I updated my drivers. I've still not gotten it running correctly, but by turning off "profiles" in my styles tab, it's speed is acceptable again.
And while I know SU is CPU driven, IMHO without a decent graphics card, zooming and orbiting becomes rather tedious.

"GPUs won't improve SketchUp performance"
I have found out that it does make a difference and the changes help to improve my computers performance;

Here is a new issue,
I am just doing a File>save and I getting the attached. the program is creating a new file with"-0"
What is this about?

What is this about? It's not a new thing. It's been happening for the last couple of versions or so. I get it periodically when I try to save after exporting to KT. I just save before sending. Currently no fix that I've heard about. When it occurs the file does get saved with the 0 appended. Annoying but at least no work is lost.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 vs. Nvidia Quadro M2000
additionally, a Quadro M2000 is much slower than a GTX 1070... don't buy.
If you need more performance invest in a high-clocked CPU and don't use high-poly components during modeling, i.e. move to a dedicated layer and switch off or do use proxy components during modeling which can be swapped to the full-blown components when modeling is finished:

Dave R,
Thank you for the clarification of the “-0” file. This has been a new issues for me since moving to 2018 version. I hope they fix it soon its annoying, so I need to now throw out the original file and remove the “-0” file to get back the original name? Its like the message “Not responding” instead of something like “this program is work on it’” and seeing a little hour glass spin around and round on my screen…that way I know it’s doing something other than crashing.
sketch3d.de,
You are right, this should have been a new thread.
I’m just frustrated that I can’t install what I have purchased and have it work,( like it use to be) without having to figure out that things have changed and I should just know about them, like picking running as an administrator (when did that happen?). But that another topic too.sorry just venting...
