SketchUp 2018 Video Card
-
I have been having major file problem especially if I have any 3D Vegetation in my files. I ran the SketchUp 2017 Checkup program and it showed that my current video cards memory is not up to par. I am looking to buy a new card and I have a few questions that maybe some of you can help me answer since I am not tech savvy enough to know even where to find the answers I need online.
What I have currently:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070What I am looking at possibly buying:
Nvidia Quadro M2000 4GB GDDR5
Video Memory: 4GB GDDR5
Memory interface: 128 Bit
Max. Resolution: 4096 x 2160, support 4x Display monitors
OpenGL 4.5
DirectX 12
Shader support: 5.0Questions:
Can these 2 card work together on my machine for V Ray 3.6? (both are Nvidia cards, the old a GE gaming card and the new one would be a Quadro Workstaion card)? or would be best to pull the old GE Card?If they can work together will it make any differences to SketchUp?
My machine:
Intel Core i7-5700 CPU@ 4.00 GHz
Ram 16 GB
Windows 10 Pro
64-BIt
x64Bit processor -

So, what's the problem exactly? SketchUp freezes when you open file? Can't navigate easily in viewport? CPU can improve that performance, not GPU.

This is known to be quite taxing in SketchUp. The best thing to do is to structure your model in such a way that you set scenes that the taxing geometry can be switched off when you're working and switched back on again when you need to export / render.
As already mentioned, more detail on the problem you're experiencing will help narrow down problem solving / solutions.

Unfortunately there is a known bug in the CheckUp app that misreports on certain GFX cards and under certain conditions. The GTX1070 should be more than adequate, depending on monitor configuration / resolution.

Nvidia Quadro M2000 4GB GDDR5SU doesn't get any performance boost from using Quadro GFX cards (or AMD similar), remember how these work, a special driver is needed to make best use of it, if no such driver exists for the software in question then no advantage. Plus the Quadro has less memory than the GTX1070, which will hurt rendering, depending on scene / model complexity / size and render output requirements.
Under the current offering of nVidia GeForce GFX cards, you don't have much room to upgrade (if you were so inclined) running a single GFX card solution. You have a choice of the following consumer grade cards, assuming you're on a desktop machine with adequate PSU: GTX1070ti, GTX1080, GTX 1080ti. single card solutions higher than (limited selection, but do-able) this is quite costly and generally considered enthusiast level.
Also, SketchUp itself doesn't benefit from a multi GFX card solution, but your other / rendering software might.

Actually it's a Windows bug that the CheckUp app exposes.

Thanks for the replies,
Interesting notes on the glitch in the checkup app that changes my thinking on getting a new card. The problem that I have with 3D vegetation is it takes a long time to import and to save the files. It can take 3 to 5 minutes to save a file, as far as moving the geometry it really slow as well. I am not talking about a huge scene with lots of geometry a bush or a tree or two cause problems. These are the same items I have used in the past in other project with no problems.
This just started a little while ago, I’d say a little over a month or so ago so it’s not just SKU 2018. The computer is a little over a year old and is a desk top unit. It supposes to be a high end gaming machine which in the past has worked well for me. Could it be something in the updates for windows 10?

It might be since historically there has been problems with and Windows 10, but I've mainly seen (online, on this forum and on SketchUp official forum) problems with selecting, etc.

If the problem started all of the sudden and you had not had that issue previously I would check the driver for your graphics card. You may need to roll it back if windows updated it and your performance dropped.
Another thing that can happen with 3d vegetation is you can run across a component that is poorly designed and bogs everything down. Even if it just that one tree or whatever. I had a 3d birch tree just this morning that was so heavy it caused sluggishness all by its lonesome. I run a gtx 1080 and do not have issues unless there is a bad driver update or bad 3d component.

The nature of your vegetation can have a massive impact on a model, I have a 2m hedge (can't remember where I got it) that will cripple any model as soon as I place it yet the premium trees from here will have little (ok maybe not little but the model is still workable) impact when used.
Here's a Twilight rendered image of a heavily planted model, it takes longer to open than normal but it's not excessive and once open I can move around quickly enough.
I'm using a MacBookPro i7/16Gb with a Radion R9 M370x, I'm using Windows 10 via a bootcamp partition as I can't stand SU on MacOS

I typically look at the files sizes before I add them to one of my files and I try and keep them around a mg as much as I can. I typically do interiors and close up of exteriors at home, so I typically don’t need a forest of items. As I said before it’s not been a problem in the past. I’ll have to look at the drivers tonight when I get back home, I don’t remember if I have updated them recently or not.
Would the video card cause SketchUp to perform poorly or as stated earlier the CPU of the computer could be a problem?
Thanks

I planning a new pc now for SU and Lumion and a 1070 is my intended card, I’d be very very surprised if it was a bottleneck. Drivers could be (and frequently are) an issue, it wouldn’t do any harm to install the latest set from Nvidia. I’d also go through the process of removing all existing drivers 1st as they have been know to not properly update leaving you with a mix of old and new files littered throughout your system.
It seems from this post (https://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59195) that the nvidia drivers can do a complete uninstall during the install process. -
Thanks Paul,
I'll try it and let you know what happens.I will also look at the 1070 as a possibility for my next move. I use Podium and lately V Ray 3.6 to render. -
You said you currently have a GTX1070 in your original post.
-
oh, yea
Im at work and doing 2 things at once and didn't catch that.. -
I ran the uninstall/install and so far things are fine in the short time I had to play with my files.
FYI and for what its worth I ran the SKU check up before and after and i get the same message. Thanks Paul Russam and everyone for your help. 'lll let you know if there are still problems later.
-
GTX1070’s all come with 8Gb of memory so that’s an obvious bug in CheckUp.
-
IF you want to test your system then I suggest you try Passmark's performance test: https://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm
You can then compare your scores (cpu, video card etc) against other cards here:
Video cards: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net
CPU's: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ -
Thanks!
I'll give it a try.

Philw,
I got the same report when I started having problems with my ASUS GTX Titan X. And it has 12GB of GDDR5.
It started running sluggishly after I updated my drivers. I've still not gotten it running correctly, but by turning off "profiles" in my styles tab, it's speed is acceptable again.
And while I know SU is CPU driven, IMHO without a decent graphics card, zooming and orbiting becomes rather tedious.
