    • New Document Question

Ok.. I have been using SketchUp since ver.3 on the Mac. I just got a new job at an architecture firm that only uses PC's.

My question is why does SU (ver.8) on windows want to close the document I am working on in order to open a new one? I don't get it.. I can't have multiple documents open at the same time?

If someone could please explain this I would appreciate it.

      Very frustrated.

      Thanks.

      Shawn

      Fredo,

I popped these into my plugins folder and when I open SU I get this error. Quite possible I did not install them in the correct place.

      Any ideas? Anyone?

      Thanks.

On Mac, it seems that in some situations, the system does not give permission to create folders via script.

i noticed by shawn's screenshots that he's using tiger (osx 10.4.xx) so i tried installing freescale on a laptop of mine that has tiger & SU 6.4.120 to see if that was the issue.

it's not.. the directory was still created automatically.. i'm now wondering what can be the cause.

Shawn, are you working from an admin account? (you can check by going System Preferences/System/Accounts.. your user name will say 'Admin' underneath it.)

[EDIT] -- ok, so i just removed the directory from my plugins folder and then logged on as a guest user.. when i tried starting sketchup from the guest account, i received the same message as shawn.. os x will not allow the directory to be created unless you have sufficient permissions to do so..

and yes, after manually placing a folder named DEFPARAM_Dir in the sketchup plugins folder, everything worked as expected.

(all of which required me to enter the system password along the way (ie- i had to enter the password in order to move the DEFPARAM_Dir into the sketchup plugins folder etc.)

Yes Jeff. I am under the admin thumb. Trouble is is I know more about Macs then she does. Oh well.

I finally got her to move that folder (DEFPARAM_Dir) into the plugins folder and it works like a dream. Thanks for all the help guys.

But you can create a personal plugin-folder under ~/Library/Application Support/Sketchup X and throw all your plug-ins into. SU will recognize that folder when starting up. And voila, no trouble with permissions!

eeeeeeeeeexcept I need permissions to modify the app support folder. meh.

Thanks again for the timesaving plugins Fredo. maybe one day I will be able to use them.... 😎

Excuse my ignorance. What do you mean create a directory? A new folder to put them in?

      Thanks for the quick reply.

    • V-Ray for sketchup Mac version coming soon??

      Hello all.

I thought I saw on Vray's site a while back that there would be Mac version coming in April. I went to their site last week and it looks as though they have changed/updated it. Needless to say I cannot find any evidence of an impending mac version now. I know it's still early in April but I am just curious if anyone has any news?

      Thanks.

Wow! Just had my first cup of coffee and thought I would check to see about the "Bend" plugin. It's like christmas morning. Thanks sooooo much Fredo!

I will give it a try and post some results. Thanks again.

      Wrecknball,

Very artistic presentation. Did you do the final presentation with layout?

      Neglected to answer your question...

All the images are straight from SU7, tweaked in Photoshop and the layout was done in Illustrator.

I'd downplay the cars ... after all, what's the presentation about? Cars? Signage? I'm not so sure with the images!

Otherwise, I think the images look very good

Thanks for the advice guys. I totally agree with you. The reason that we do actually show the cars and people that way is to give the designs a sense of scale. The client always wants to be able to see how big these things are going to be in relationship to their building or site. As these are signs that are directing people from within their vehicles it is imperative that we show that relationship.

I totally agree with you Gaucho. My boss likes it to look busy like that. Not really my style but, hey, he signs my checks.

BTW the se sheets are 36" x 60" when we print them out for presentations. My boss likes to "overwhelm" the client.

      Thanks for the critique.

Have not posted any work in... well, it's been a while.

These are presentation sheets that I did for a meeting. Really rough ideas.

      Just thought I would share.

The reason I asked is that, although Bending is definitely not part of the native Sketchup transformation and can give interesting results, I am curious to know if it could be useful in a 'practical' 3D design life.

I am a environmental graphic designer. I design high end custom signage all day long. The most tedious part of designing in sketchup for me is the inability to "bend" text onto a curved surface. For now I have to go through many steps to get the text to appear to wrap the surface. If my client needs a change then it just takes me even long because I have to start over.

This script of yours would be way up there on my list of the most valuable scripts in my arsenal.

Looking forward to making my life easier.

      Thanks.
