@cacowan said: I've seen the same problem described better on another site. Same conditions... A clean Yosemite OS. And a new download of Sketchup. It's not "Finder" that's crashing. It's the "in program " access to the file system. So in Layout, it won't create the window that accesses the file list more than once. In sketchup, it won't create the window that accesses a texture list or when you want to add a local component library... It won't create the window that accesses the file system to locate the reference file more than once. I've rolled back to Maverics until this is solved. I wonder... Just prior to wiping the computer there was a OS Yosemite update. It included a security update and it might be what slowed the startup on my Mac. On reinstalling Sketchup on Mac , there's always that caution that you're opening a program that is downloaded from the internet. What if it's the OS interfering with the program accessing the file system because it's not recognizing the app author? Most strange! This is not happening to me with the latest Yosemite and SU, so obviously it is something specific to your system...but what? Have you looked in the console logs to see if there is a flood of messages when these things happen? I doubt a security issue over the app author would slow things down. When I've seen such problems, there is a dialog that pops up and blocks the app completely until you give permission to proceed.

it's not the only important button in sketchup that does't look like a button.

If nothing else works you could try to run this in the Ruby console: Sketchup.send_action 10624 [image: 10115-pasted-from-clipboard-png] A bit down from the middle there is Near, Far and Force That lets you set the clipping planes manually. Beware that this is not an "official" Camera settings panel so be sure to make a backup if you use it. Also you may have to run it again to uncheck/reset this Force clipping planes after.

TT's SoildInspector will highlight problems with things that are preventing your group/component from being a 'solid'. Obvious holes, missing faces etc can be fixed manually. A simple way to remove 'internal partitions' is to edit the object and make a temporary section-cut so you can access them for selection: click a face of an internal partition and press <delete> to remove it. Repeat, finally select and delete the temporary section-cut, and re-test for 'solidity' - 'Entity Info' will say 'Solid' in its top-bar if it is... There are tools to 'heal' non-solids - my SolidSolver is one of them. However, these will fail if you have extremely convoluted multiple issues, as fixing one sometimes creates or changes another...

The free version of Maxwell only lets you do small images of your renders. I have a $99 upgrade that allows me to do large images. I'm not sure what Pro gives you.

@chedda said: Yeah great, brings back memories of that Flash Gordon ship the noise the dodgy effects and smoke trail. I suppose this is one case when you didn't want to smooth the geometry. I did smooth the geometry, but something between SketchUp and Maxwell wouldn't translate. I've since learned the solution is simply to have a curve with more facets or sides. The main body on the Flash Gordon ship was done with 120 sides. For a large surface and a tight radius that's not good enough. Even 180 sides will show facets. However, doing a large cylinder or saucer like object with 360 sides will work.

I now try to keep intersections restricted strictly to the faces and edges and/or components needed. But that doesn't solve my other speed problem. Now I have my model made and I just want to mirror it so I can add the two halves together and then add a few asymmetrical details, but all I get is the "spinning beach-ball of death." It's brutally slow and so annoying. I like using Sketchup, but this is quickly becoming unworkable. I've turned off all extras like shadows and edges and whatever else. I've purged unused elements. I've hidden what I don't need. I just want to copy and mirror the model so I can finish it off and render it, but it's just so slow. I've gone away for more than a half hour lunch and when I come back I still see the spinning beach-ball. Is there nothing that can be done about this? When I check my Activity Monitor it looks like it's using nearly 100% of the CPU (assuming I'm reading it correctly). Is this even normal? I have an older 1.42GHz eMac with Snow Leopard on it and 2GB RAM, but it isn't convenient for me to install Sketchup 8 onto that and transfer the files. Seems rather silly for me to have to consider going back to that from my current iMac with OSX Lion and 8GB RAM.
