    • Dan Grayber bell jar sculpture

Awhile ago, I stumbled upon the website for an interesting artist, Dan Grayber, who makes sculptures that look like something you would find in a mechanical engineering lab at some university, or perhaps in an R&D department at Caterpillar, Inc. I really like them, and decided to try modeling one of the simpler ones to learn something about rendering with glass, and improving my lighting skills.

This is a model of his "Cavity Mechanism #2 with Glass Dome". Modeled in SketchUp, rendered in Kerkythea.

You can see more of Dan's sculptures on his website - they are really cool! http://www.dangrayber.com/

Something is bothering me about the size of the toilets compared to the washbasin. They seem too small...is everything to scale in this model?

    • RE: First render using KT

Great start! I'm new to KT too and I'm really enjoying the process of learning how to use it.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend that you follow the "Beginners Starting Guide" thread in the the KT Forum. You can find it here: http://www.kerkythea.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4863 You'll find out how to use a fake emitter trick so that those ceiling lights look more realistic.

Wow! SU has really reordered my life. I find I'm more conscious of small blocks of time not spoken for when I can dive in for a while.

Caution: SketchUp can be addictive and pretty soon you may find that these "small blocks of time" become bigger and bigger, and you don't care if they are spoken for or not!

      Nice work!

    • RE: Export dimensions from SU

      Hi

Does anyone know if it it possible to export dimensions (leader lines and text) for rendering with the model in Kerkythea. I have posted this on the KT forum but no replies yet.

      Thanks

I think Post Pro is the easiest way to do it, like Gaieus said. The key is to make sure that the image size and scene that you export from SketchUp is exactly the same size and scene as the image that you render in KT. The easiest way to do this is to get the view set up exactly how you want it in SU, make it a Scene, turn off everything except your dimensions, and export a 2D .png of the dimensions. Make sure you use "view size" as your image size. Then turn everything back on that you want to render and export it to KT using the SU2KT plugin and open it up to render. If you are careful to avoid rotating, panning, or zooming the view, when you start the render make sure it is set to "render current view" and you will get an image that exactly matches your exported image from SU. Otherwise, if you move around, render the "scene" that you created and make sure that the image size matches the size that you exported from SU. I hope this helps!

Here -- http://www.crydev.net/viewtopic.php?p=819231#p819231 -- is a post for bringing SketchUP models into the new crysis (game) engine.

I'm glad that you posted that link...I had never seen that tutorial and I really learned a lot about texture mapping from it. It is nicely written and as you say, has lots of good visual examples. Nice recommendation.

    • Stiltsville house

I used to live in South Florida, and one of my favorite places was "Stiltsville", an affectionate name for group of stilt houses located in Biscayne Bay near Miami Beach. At one time during the 1960's, there were nearly 30 of these structures, but many of them have since been torn down. Here's a concept that I had for a new Stiltsville house...

I like it! Lots of nice detail. Can you add a little more illumination to the first two images or adjust the exposure, they seem a little dark.

Well, one way to do it is to raise up a cylinder in segments, and use the scale tool on the face of segment to give it a taper.
