Never include a space between the method and the opening parenthesis that is enclosing its argument[s]...

I was going to tattoo that statement on my arm, but my Wife wont let me. ๐Ÿ˜„

Regardless, I have often wondered what goes through the mind of those that write
computer languages. What fantasy world do they live in? It would not be very easy to read
a sentence without spaces between words, would it?

What's the correct Ruby code statement that I should replace in the code snippet (see attachment) for this Ruby to run in SU 2014?

I have now installed Sketchup 2014. I must say that it is a difficult and time-consuming business to find all the beloved plugins again. Many are not yet available for 2014. That means you have to look always in the Extension warehouse or in the Plugin store if there is a matching plugin available. Some will perhaps not at all updated. I think It will certainly take months until the most Plugins are up to date. Until then I will continue to maintain my beloved Sketchup 8. Until now I can still see no advantage over Sketchup 8. Maybe I will recognize the benefits later.

I'm in total agreement with you. Consider for a moment all the users that were happy, could potentially become unhappy users. Just because they thought the next version was going to improve their SU experience. I'm a part-time plugin developer. I write plugins not for financial gain. The $5.00/plugin is there just to avoid FREE leeching. I'm also staying with 8 ๐Ÿ˜„

    • RE: Can I have a Gripes & Bitchin' for Su 2014 thread?

Many years ago I spent way too much time upgrading with each and every new bug infested release of AutoCad. AutoDesk conveniently used its users, through AutoCad User Groups to also become its Beta testers, for their SHIT software, while the User also paid the full price. A typical example of American Exceptionalism at work, happens to work, and has made AutoDesk a Billion Dollar company. Yes the Upgrade model still works, even if nothing has been added to the program, each year.

Looks like Trimble is going down the same road. I already see too many users complaining that many things are not working, that used to work in past versions of SU. But there is a solution, ....get off the upgrade Tread Mill. Be happy with whats been working. Why do you want to complicate your life with the latest version and more potential problems?

Sorry Trimble, I'm not going to go down the this road again. Bin der done dat!

And what was so imminently urgent to change the location of the Plugins Folder?
All that shows is a concern to be Windows Registry Complaint. While at the same time causing a lot of grief for SU users where Older Ruby plugins now go.

      I'm staying with SU 8!

    • RE: SU 2014 and Plugins

I don't plan to go out and buy or upgrade to SU2014, at this time! None of my plugins, use Ruby installation code. I explain via a simple text file were a particular ruby and icons should reside, within the SU file structure. I hope this is still an acceptable method going forward!

With v2014 the newly located Plugins folder automatically has FULL permissions so at last this issue should be behind us

Where do I find out more about the location of the new v2014 plugins folder?
It seems to me there were more important items on various SU wish lists, over the years. I don't ever recall seeing move the Plugins folder, on such a list. ๐Ÿ˜ข

    • [$] Dormer Ruby

I needed to bang out some Dormers a few months ago for a design proposal. This simple task turned out to be quite time consuming, particularly when the client kept asking for alternative designs. So recently I decided to automate the process, my new Dormer ruby is the result. Have a look at my plugins link below.

      Cheers!

Since IE and WIN OS share many DLL's that contain these calls, an update to an IE DLL will update an OS DLL, but not necessarily vice versa. The app developer WILL have the latest IE on his system, and may use an "updated" OS call, but if you have an older IE, that call may fail. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Your point is well taken! ๐Ÿ‘
Which is why I have always maintained the decision to use Web dialogs in the first place, was a bad idea.

Lets face it, a robust SU Ruby API should have been developed with its own graphical interface, not unlike the capability of Python. Its unfortunate Ruby was chosen over Python but that's a story for another day. Instead the SU API developers decided to hitch their horse to the I.E. cart which is about as popular as BING. and also alienates the OSX user.

Lets face it, its almost 2014, and we still have not been able integrate simple graphical information along with user input in a simple format, without a programmer learning 3 other languages to make this work, and also having to be I.E. compliant ..... its downright laughable!

SketchUp makes use of the OS render engine - under Windows that means IE and under OSX that is WebKit. Many other applications also uses embedded web controls - which will mostly mean IE. So keeping IE up to date is important - because it affects not only the browser but IE as a development platform. Ensuring you have the latest IE also makes your system more secure as IE is deeply embedded into the OS.

My computer runs Win7 64 and receives updates, from Microsoft and has done so automatically since I installed this OS several years ago. I would have thought it updates I.E. as well, even though I might not use I.E. as a browser.

      Is my assumption right? ๐Ÿ˜•

      That is a red-herring.

I don't write Web dialogs, I'm simply reporting a Web Dialog Issue. As I stated in my last reply

"There are many Ruby Web dialogs, now in use. None of which cause errors when an.html is opened in Firefox" particularly when the Ruby Web dialog has not even been installed yet.

Its simply my observation that all Ruby Web dialogs I have collected Don't exhibit errors. while this particular script does.

Why this is so, I don't know? Maybe this red-Herring has been contaminated from Fukushima. ๐Ÿ˜ข

The webdialogs in SU use Ie, and we can't force using something else. So update your Ie version!

Sorry but this had nothing to do with updating I.E.
Windows 64 is already being updated automatically by Microsoft.
Also There are many Ruby Webdialogs, now in use. None of these cause errors when a .html is opened in Firefox.

Have a look at your Layers Panel.html and options.html , both files give the following errors when opened

      "The address wasn't understood"
" Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (skp) isn't associated with any program."

      Question?

Whats the significance of having IE installed? I use win7 64, I have never installed I.E. and don't intend to do so. I use Mozilla FireFox only. And I hate being reminded by a dialog box from the plugin if I want to switch. Can you make the use of I.E. optional?

Otherwise I like the plugin, very! very! much. ๐ŸŽ‰

    • Find (3d point) intersection of 2 lines?

I can't find via search if this has been answered before. ๐Ÿ˜ž

      1. 2 lines including each of their end point coordinates are known,
they also intersect and share a common plane.
      2. The common plane these 2 lines intersect on may be xy, yz or xz planes
      3. Since the end points of each line may change their common intersection point will also change.

How do I quickly derive the intersecting point, for any varying 2 line intersection?

      TIA!

    • RE: Architecture the Dutch Way

My grandchildren possess more artistic skills worthy to be displayed on my Fridge.
I can't see how this Crap deserves to be displayed in a public place.

The artist has obviously never looked at a picture of wood grain, much less try to draw wood grain. Knows nothing of how to construct a One point perspective to scale, using a plan view. Has never looked at human outline figure before drawing it. Why would he or she spend time using straight lines and pencil for such a child like drawing. all that's missing is the sun in the upper right corner. ๐Ÿ˜„

      My suggestion to the artist
If you can't draw, try practicing your freehand skills on a table napkin, first.
also have a look at some of FLW's sketches.

    • RE: An open letter by Stephen Fry

I deflected my comments to Mr. Fry. But since you started this topic, I feel I have to call you on your lack of critical thinking. Critical thinking involves looking at both sides of an argument, before making ones own.

      @unknownuser said:

Me, I am just happy when someone displays decency, intelligence and civility.

I too aspire to those same values. Unfortunately I don't see them in Mr Fry or from most if not all people running for public office. All this posturing does nothing more than promote more war and less peace in the world.

      Here is a critical though:

Get rid of all this Flag waiving B.S. Its much cheaper to provide this type of entertainment via reality TV. Eliminate the Olympics. The Olympics have become too expensive to maintain. Poor people would be better off, if governments would spent more money on poverty. The 1976 Montreal Olympics were not paid for by taxpayers of Canada till 2006, And since 2006 Quebec's can be proud to owning an Architectural Piece of Shit call the Big OWE, which no longer serves any useful purpose.
