One thing is that SU only operates on a single core. That is a known bottle neck and a major deficiency, annoyance and severe limitation for sketchup users.
That is a known bottle neck and a major deficiency, annoyance and severe limitation for every CAD system, at least for modeling operations which are in general single-threaded only. The mentioned 10-core CPU doesn't help here (Passmark-ST: 2,149 points), a much cheaper i7-9700K would be considerably faster (Passmark-ST: 2,825 points).
Besides of this and w/o knowing Blender I do assume, that the inference engine of Blender is not as slick as the one of SU, which simply consumes some processing ressources.
What does "Window > Model Information > Statistic > Entire Model" say? Does purging there help?

Is there something that is essentially stopping us from developing our own opensource SketchUp "clone"?
lightyears of knowledge in highly complex development of a 3D kernel as well as an accelerated OpenGL display output, glueing a programming API and last but not least connecting/developing vector-based 2D/3D data exchange interfaces for multiple platforms... just to name the most difficult stuff.

RE: Sketchup Pro 2015 Maintenance 3 File
you can download the latest version 2015 x32/x64 from our SUP download archive, ENglish (and DE) only.

RE: SAT or ITP file to sketchup. Can anyone help me?
ask the inventor user for a STEP export and try to import with the SimLab STEP importer for SketchUp.

This sounds very much as a somebody who is a reseller of SU-pro.
...and constantly donating to the community for free by hosting the German SU forum (ad-free), trying to support on all forums, supporting and consulting even non-customers as well as providing some ressources as e.g. support tools, a thorough download archive or LO templates (DIN/ISO).

But then remember the many SU-Make users that are involved in helping others in these forums.
And don't forget the Plugin developers that make and made all the free Plugins.
This community of helping and giving people are the ones who made Sketchup such a successful program.SketchUp is the reason which made SketchUp such a successful program already since the @Last times with no free version and no communities avail.
Plugin developers can request a NFR license of SU Pro, hobbyists and supporters can use the Make version 2017 withount any runtime limit (besides OS support breaks).

Its a valid remark if you're making money using Make. For hobbyists, who are happy with the 2015 technology, its pestering.
if you're making money using Make it's a violation of the license agreement and therefore illegal. Hobbyists getting SketchUp Make actually up to version 2017 for free should be pretty happy to get their hands on this nearly unlimited version... I know, giving an inch but expecting a yard is common these days.

And, Sketch3d.de, thank you for additional information. I should have noted that I'm doing Mac and should always include that.
have seen this but the post is a reply to Box meant for users of this other minor platform

There are only two reasons I can think of for installing Make 2015 rather than the final Make 2017.
the third reason under Windows is the ability to disable the OpenGL hardware acceleration of the GPU ("Window > Preferences > OpenGL") for enabling to run with sub-par graphics systems (e.g. integrated intel HD series) and driver versions with an incompatible OpenGL support latest with SU version 2016.

This is why the files cannot be found with a search. The content of that folder is hidden from the user.

if the need for searching all files incl. the hidden ones rises again, the free 'EasyFind' should do.

...exporting native Sketchup file into STEP or IGS file format. I can't find any good and easy way to do that.
there is no good way to do that because the facetted meshes created with SketchUp do not make much sense for the STEP or ol' IGES formats made for a 3D CAD data exchange of NURBSplines based surfaces and solids... which is typically expected by resp. useful only in the importing 3D CAx modeling application.
The easiest way is probably misusing a NURBS-based modeler by exporting from SU to the DWG format, import in the NURBS modeler, optionally do a mesh to NURBS conversion if available and export preferrably to the recent STEP format (industry standard for exchanging exact 3D CAD data)... still a workaround.

Can you imagine after so many years (and not dumping any old files) how many files that will call up?
Sorting by Date should resolve this... using the concerning <filename> instead of a wildcard shoud lead to significant less results.

RE: 2019 Recovered files On Mac
you may want use the Finder to search for files of the convention: "<filename>~.skp"

Which is to say I'm using SU 2016 and have no need / intention of using anything new from Trimble.
...What happens when I have to build a new PC? Maybe this year, certainly before the end of the 2020. I have the installer from 2016... will it install and produce a working copy of SU Make or is this licensing stuff Trimble is talking about right now going to prevent that?
why not use the last Make version 2017?
No license data needed to run SU Make, therefore no product activation contacting the Trimble license server required.
