Yes, I did. Well I'd rather write that I didn't realized that's such a big achievement. And what about Revit? Indeed, I imagine Autodesk still have Autocad on Windows due to legacy issue. If they could they would have made everybody switch for Revit or Inventor.

there have been some very big announcements recently in the world of CAD, including that biggy from Autodesk.
Which announcements? I've seen some including Autodesk products able to read buildings of the 3dWarehouse. But from your point of view, which are the most important announcement or features recently added in CADs?

RE: Sketch Up 8

RE: The everlasting gift
What about the 50 states quarters? With the right folder it's also the opportunity to show more about the country. To tell you all, I wouldn't put all the coins in it. It's fun when I'm in the USA to check the change for a new coin. But you can always offer two folders. One full and another to fill.
But true, it's quite difficult to find something for someone you don't know.

RE: Laser-Scanning Backpack Creates Instant 3-D Maps of Building
Well if there's a student in robotic and/or computer vision, I have a challenge: use an iPhone to do exactly the same think regarding modelling interior of buildings. I'm sure it can be done (well I have just a doubt about having the model in real time). And if you have it, please contact me, I know someone within the firm I'm working with who would be interested.
To come back to the solution introduced here, it's disappointing to see so much technology to do what is done for a while with less. Robots have used LIDAR and cameras to model their environment and locate themselves for a while. Hopefully they want a resolution that only a laser can provide but I think with today's technology we can achieve the same resolution with cameras (according you are not looking for one under a few millimeters).
Just to make my point regarding the fact that only a camera is enough: have a look at the following commercial services I know http://www.arc3d.be/ , http://www.cogent3d.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=82&Itemid=86 . I had also several papers from academics on the topic. But still nothing from someone creating the 3D model of an interior environment with a Smartphone

RE: Skp. to Physical Model?
I just saw on a French website a firm having 3D printers who prints your model then ships it to you (at least in Europe according to their website). In the FAQ it's said that SKP, KMZ and DAE are accepted (the list is bigger). And of course it's not free.
What might be interesting for some people is that you can create 3D objects in color. You can also display your design on their website. If someone want to have a 3D output of it, then you can be paid (but you can also people use your design for free).
I have never tried their services. I have no connection with them. I'm sure they have competitors. So rather than directly putting the link there, I prefer to put http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=3D+printer+SKP+kmz+dae&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= and you should find it.

RE: 3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!
I do too,
well actually we are a team of three using SketchUp and developing plugins to explain, prescribe and sale dynamic passive solutions. But we figure out that three individuals coming from the same firm would be too much (it's more than 1% of the attendees), even if each of us does have a real added value to the other. So we limit ourselves to 1 and it's not me (now if the organizers disagree, ...)
I saw my colleagues posting a message here to ask if someone can send him an invitation. But I still not see his post. So if you send me the invitation (or 3 ) then I will transmit it to him. If we receive two invitations (after all, you might reply to me and after to him, we will immediately warn the one inviting us that we are all set).
Thanks

RE: [Poll] Have you been invited to 3D Basecamp 2010?
@alan fraser said:
Well, the percentage is somewhat irrelevant, as it would be heavily swayed by the literally tens of thousands of SCF members who didn't get an invitation...any one of whom could take part in the survey. More to the point is the actual number of people that did get an invite. This appears to be pretty small and is probably limited to people who have a long-standing relationship with the former @Last and who are personally known to John Bacus, Bryce Stout etc.
I'm one of them...but unfortunately I can't attend. I couldn't attend the Mountain View one either as it came barely a month after I'd flown all the way to Boston and back for the AIA...but I was a speaker at the original Boulder basecamp. It seems like John is looking for a max of 250 attendees, so maybe those of us that did get an invitation ought to go into a huddle and figure out who to recommend between us. Of course for that we'll need to know who actually wants to take part.In the same time, we can imagine that the people who has answered this poll are the one interested by the Basecamp. It means that we potentially have 28 people interested but not invited (at the time they answer the poll). That's typically my case and two of my colleagues. We have double check the budget and it's ok. But as we recognize that 3 out of 200 is a large number, we have decided to require an invitation for one (it has been sent in an other thread). Now if someone having invitation thinks that 3 from the same firm is not too much ....

RE: 3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!
Quite an interesting question: What is the purpose of the Basecamp?
There are so many possible answers that with only 200 people I imagine that some attendees won't find anyone to have a valuable "Unconference" session. For example, if my team and myself were invited (3 people but I'm still not posting a request here as suggested in one post here. I would have to double check for the budget and our agenda before), some topics I'd like to discuss are the usage of SketchUp as a BIM 5D system; how to really program Dynamic Component (in Java or Ruby) and turn SketchUp into an event-driven programming system; Green buildings and SketchUp; Controlling the real world through SketchUp (we have interesting results there); ...
I have two questions:
- Is a Webinar or at least a live broadcast over the Internet is planned or not?
- I'm quite interested in knowing the list of topics you would like to exchange on during a BaseCamp.

RE: 3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!
I read in the FAQ http://sites.google.com/site/3dbasecamp2010/faq
"Who can attend the event?
To attend the event, you must be 18 years of age or older and receive an invitation from us.""What is the registration and confirmation timeline for the event?
July 2 - Round 1 registration deadline
July 13 - Nomination form due
July 14 - Nominee invitations are sent out via e-mail
July 21 - Deadline for nominees to register
"So there's still hope as July 2nd is not over yet and more important, if there's a round 1, there should be a round 2 somewhere to have the 200 attendees "How many event invitations will be extended?
The precise number of invitations we extend will depend on the amount of space we have available, but we estimate the number to be about 200." So keep your fingers crossed as some of you are very active here and this site has been the first a Google Evangelist pointed out as a place to look when I asked a very specific question during last AIA.By the way, is there somewhere the list of event where Google is exhibiting to promote SketchUp? At least there's AIA convention. But anyone knows the others, if any?
-
RE: 3D Basecamp 2010!!!!!
I can understand why it's on invitation only and why it's limited to 200 people. But I'm sure that a lot of people who are not invited (deadline is today), would have come, starting with me and two of my colleagues (nothing in my mailbox , but it's not surprising, whatever we do with SketchUp, I'm sure we are still under the radar of the organizers).
It would like to see someone organizing a convention or something like this. One year in the USA, one year in Europe (should we have one year in Asia?). If the dates are always the same or known well before, I'm sure there will be a lot of people and certainly some sponsors. I'm sure the challenge is not to have people coming but to keep the spirit of a basecamp and limit the fees to ... let say 0
Now, I make a wish: That everyone who wants to attend this Basecamp can do it, at least thanks to a Webinar.
(PS: I'm not sure what would be the most efficient way to communicate during the webinar, but I'm sure that if after each session the speaker come on a Wave or something allowing interaction, the exchanges would be very interesting and productive).

RE: Energetic and light study?
It appears to me that you are looking for Daysim
to stay with free tools, there's Radiance and Su2Rad (http://code.google.com/p/su2rad/)
If I recall well someone was writting another code that could be used instead of Radiance (faster and easier to use). Does someone have information on it?

RE: Transparent solar panel fenestration
I do not know any commercial products but some manufacturers were working on them several years ago. The two technologies used I recalled are:
- dye PV. A Swiss spin off of EPFL was working on it. I have seen several submissions for funds at the EU level.
- thin film deposite micro-punched. It was from one Japanese firm (maybe Sharp).
This last approach is not far from using a solar protection as PV. And there, there're several existing products. Of course the PV cells with gaps between each of them. This is used in a lot of projects. You also have flexible PV used as fabric for awning for example.

Hopefully that's what you are looking for. I also have it in BMP 24 bits but I guess it's too large for here. I'm not able to upload it. Email me if you want it

SergeIf this is what you want, there are packages designed specifically for this... such as Ecotect - i believe it was recently bought by Autodesk?
You're right, Ecotect as Green Building Studio are Autodesk's products. 3DS Max is another one and is also able to assest the LEED IEQ 8.x credits. IES is also providing very interesting tools (just not to speak about only one brand).
Another way to answser this point is to use Radiance. There's a plugin to translate a SU file into one radiance can proceed. But it's not a very simple process. It also takes a lot of time. At one point I heard about another plugin for SU that would be accurate and very fast. But not news since then. Anyone knows what I'm speaking about and has some insights?Whatever, somewhere my question is also "how much" photorealistic are all the tools you are speaking about? Clearly they gives nice pictures but (sorry guys I'm not going to make friends there) is architecture only about nice pictures?

RE: How to be sure that the UI is updated?
Yes I'm looking to be sure that the UI is updated while I have a ruby script running. Actually I'm playing with the shadows and I want to save some pictures.
I share the idea to have Ruby running faster but in a lot of time it doesn't help. For example, when the Ruby console is no more updated (yes I'm still looking for a good tool to work on my plug-ins: spy, step-running, break points, ...)
What looks strange to me is that there's a function to say to Sketchup that it must not update the UI anymore. Is there any function to tell it to update the UI right now? A kind of "flush".
Thanks

How to be sure that the UI is updated?
Hello,
I'm looking for a way to be sure that sketchup has updated the UI.
I've seen some discussions on this topic but the solutions was to put a messagebox. But as I don't want to stay in front of my computer, that's not an option for the plugins I'm currently writting.
Is there another solution?
Thank you

How to create a DC with 2 entries linked by a formula
I wish to create a DC defined with 2 values that I want editable and that are linked by a formula.
For example a right triangle. I wish to have two entries: one angle or the opposite side length. The DC would compute the value that wouldn't have been changed by the user and update the drawing as well as the two values so they are again linked by the formula.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

How to change a 3D text?
I'm looking for a thermometer with a digital display. The idea is to ask for the temperature and to display it with a 3D text.
Can someone tell me how to do that?
Thanks
SergeP.S.: is there somewhere a good tutorial for Dynamic Components. I'm looking for a full list of the attributes you can find in the dictionnary and for methods to create my own methods for OnClick.
