Are you creating design or construction documents?
I assume that there would be a drawing of it at a suitable scale to establish the profile desired. I'd go with 'dropped newel, see detail'.

A notice pops up when I start SU, telling me that four extensions need to be updated.
If I select these extensions, three out of the four tell me:
"Failed to update xxx, Unable to read extension archive."
What's with this? Where is it looking for the archive(s)?
How do I insure that extensions are installed correctly, that is, will update properly in the future?
Thank you
I like to draw a set of lines which will be used later to create piping. In order to have these appear in the Outliner, I group them. Since there are more than a few, each group representing a different system, water, electric, heat, etc., it would be good to apply different colors to them.
I've tried putting them on a separate layer - 'color by layer' doesn't work. Neither does trying to apply a material color.
Is it possible to apply a display color to lines?
I hope that this is the best place for this question.
What is the relationship, if any, between 'vertexTools', 'subD', and quadFaceTools?
Are they independent or is one or more required for the other(s) to function?
Thank you
Thanks Chip
I am in the habit of selecting the objects before the tool. I didn't realize that the move tool must be selected first for this to work.
I have a similar problem - easy to describe:
I'd like to move one corner of a planer surface.
I had assumed that I'd need 'Vertex Tools' or another plugin, but then I saw DaveR's reply.
I can't get vertices to display. SU behaves as though vertices didn't exist. This is consistent with the general rule that SU only knows about edges and faces.
What am I missing?
Create an object or assembly in it's own .skp file.
Import or insert the assembly or component into a 'main' SU model.
Update and edit the assembly file; it would be good if the assembly were updated in the main file, similar to what LayOut does with inserted SU models.
This becomes more important as the assembly becomes more complex.
Forgive the vague subject.
Is it possible to convert a SketchUp object to a LayOut object; that is, a real LayOut vector object, not just a link to a SU file?
I understand that it is possible to do something like this using .pdf's with the Mac version, but I'm on Windows.
Thank you
The subject might a little misleading, what I'm looking for is a command that, after I select a few objects in a crowded scene (very long Outliner), allows me to hide everything else. Then, when I've completed work on the selected objects, unhide the recently hidden objects.
Perhaps thre's a command hidden somewhere, or possibly a script.
A long delay in responding, I know ---
As I stated in my original post, I am on maintenance and am entitled to the 2015 Pro upgrade without additional cost.
I downloaded and installed SU 2015. It installed as a trial version and asks me to "buy a license." I don't need to buy a license, I have one already. The issue comes from my trying to install SU on a different computer than the one that the previous (SU2014Pro) is on.
The 'trial' version has expired, so now what do I do? I'm certain that many users purchase new computers and somehow manage to get the license transferred. I must be missing something pretty basic.
Thanks
I am on maintenance but have put off upgrading to 2015.
I have finally put my 64 bit computer together and would like to upgrade, however the new version will be going on a different computer than 2014 is on. What's the correct procedure?
Thank you
One of the SU videos might help - I think it's called 'inference locking'.
This thread has included a variety of issues and questions, many indirectly relating to the direction that SU is headed.
Some of you may have seen this but, for those who haven't, look at the Trimble ad on pg. 8 of the December 2013 issue of "Building Design and Construction". It includes SketchupPro as a companion to their other products, "Proliance", and "Modelogix". Sketchup is described as a collaboration tool, working along with the others to "...track the performance of infrastructure and facilities across your portfolio in order to effectively plan for the future..."
This is where it's headed, hence the BIM direction in the current release.
The images here are indeed impressive.
It would be great if the poster/creator included the name of the renderer used as well as the plugins used, and, if there was any post-processing.
This information is provided for a few of the images but it would be nice if this info was a normal part of the presentation.
I downloaded it a few days ago - had no problem with download or installation.
It looks interesting and it might provide a clue as to where Trimble is going with SketchUp.
I'm in the process of splitting a SU model into several separate models which I'll import, perhaps intentionally creating a clash or two to learn how it handles this.
Since this a collaboration application and doesn't have editing tools, I wonder if it will work as a SU viewer.
I've had similar experiences with 'warp speed' zooming wen I'm close to objects and would like to get a little closer. One mouse click is too much.
I've been blaming this on the mouse and have been looking for one that will zoom smoothly, without clicks. I've had no luck so far.
A related but different problem occurs when I zoom out and back into a wall or other object. The cursor gets 'lost in space'. I have to zoom extents, then try again to get where I want to go.
Yes, one could turn an object off to allow zooming but that becomes a pain in a scene with a lot of objects, unless you are being paid by the hour, of course.
It would be great if I could just move forward again to get out of the object that I collided with.
I'm glad that Trimble didn't go to a subscription model ala Adobe CS, but re: this thread, I'll vote for a fully capable SketchUp as a standalone offering. If it can stay under $200.00, there'd be more than a few who upgrade from 'Make'.
I'd go a little further; If one has a Pro license, additional 'full' SU could be $100. per seat.
How about rulers and guides as in Illustrator? I understand that the mac version has rulers; I don't know whether it has guides.
