RE: Thick vs. thin lines?
jaredmac, first off, welcome to the forum, it looks like your off to an admirable start.
The thin lines mean you have a closed loop or a surface that will opaque (skin 0ver). The dark lines are just independent lines and haven't formed a closed box. Dont worry about duplicate lines, this isnt like cad where the lines just keep stacking up, the software is smart enough to absorb (as one of the experts calls it) a line placed over it. Keep your lines as long as possible, as not to have short segments, if possible.Just keep drawing, use the group tool,(one of the first big concepts) to isolate your lines from all the others) and you will see as you complete the squares your lines will get more consistent.
Good luck. -
Open more than one group?
What would be the technique for stretching a model of a house that has groups consisting of floor, walls, another floor, 2nd walls and a roof. As far as I can tell you can only edit one group at a time, Can you use the outliner in conjunction with the group edit to open more than one group?

RE: Reference handle for placement
Killing myself with the grammar here.
The copy command works fine, copy provides a method to get control.
Paste from file to file is another situation. Even in the school tutorials the tutor has to place it rotate and move.SU is far too powerful a tool, and I just think they haven't gotten around to perfecting it yet.

paste in place
The in should be an and... LOL. what is that a preposition replaced by a conjunction?I would like to be able to control where the handle is when you bring it into another file; the object always has to be placed, then grabbed again with the move tool, or sometimes even rotated before the final move.
A ruby would be good...but if the rubsters could do that, I would like to have a key toggle where you can rotate the object to correct orientation before placing it the first time. Like the bracket toggle on cad.

Reference handle for placement
When you copy to clipboard, Is there a method to control the handle of the object when paste is selected in another file? It doesn't seem to have a consistent or even predictable reference location.

RE: Mirror.rb blues
did you try the Render Plus Mirror tool? It works the way you expect.
edit; nevermind,I forgot you were on a mac, just came to me.

RE: How does a SU project read supporting files?
I have run a test, and I cant see a reference back to a parent either, I really need to do a cleanup, and I'd hate to wreck my system. I have a cad program that reads file locations and doesn't make copies, and it is easy to loose data after changing computers or file reorganization.
-
How does a SU project read supporting files?
I dont really know how to ask this in computer terms, so I think I have covered the same question 3 different ways, but I think they are basically the same.
If I have componenets in my library and have placed them in several SU jobs and I want to recatagorize my component library, like add new folders or sub catagory levels to my component library...Do the components placed before the reorganization still read or show up in the old instance if I move the parent to a new location?
Same question for rasters, if I place a raster in a SU file, then the location of the parent raster is moved, will this mess up the raster used in my SU file?
Are the instances of Components and rasters placed in a SU FIle, copies or do they reference the parent file location?
Thanks

RE: Friday evening material pattern challange
Anssi, Thank you for the technique, It worked fantastic! I really wasn't looking forward to explaining why the inside surfaces of the tub looked like stone! I appreciate your help.

Friday evening material pattern challange
Twas a Friday Evening and I was ready to go....was trying to get one last thing finished for the day; creating a cool flagstone pattern and turning it into a material.
I created it and applied it to the patio, and was happy with the result. saved my work : way to go me... then I zoomed out, and that pettern had applied itself to about 4 gropups. Guess I wasn't deep enough. Obviously!I tried to erase it.... its everywhere... I shut down and reopened and erased it off the big areas and I have started applying colors over the pattern. Is there an effective way to get rid or a pettern applied in mass?
TIAI cleaned it up...

Closing Groups and Components after edit
Is there a command to close multiple groups and components with one click or menu selection?
I am working on this house, and I have deep levels of groups and components, when I need to make a minor adjustment to an deep lying entity, that is like ten levels down i want to get back out quick and I have to close each instance. is there a command to close all real fast? I see the close group/component under the Edit menu, but this is a one-at-a-time command.
thanks -
RE: Creating components
Right click on the component you want to use in your "in model" menu.
click save as,
on the Explorer menu that appears, click the down arrow to get to
Click Programs'
Google
SU 6
Components,
Then make your catagories there like appliances, railings etc.
I hope this works I am doing it from memory cause my component menu has disappeared and I cant find it! Have a good one. -
RE: Floating Dialog menu disappeared
yes same with me. couldn't live w/out them. Thanks

Floating Dialog menu disappeared
Actually all of the disappeared. I can bring up new ones like Fog and Photomatch, But My Layer, Scene, Outliner, Components, materials & styles have disappeared. I think this was a vid card issue, and I have set my resolutions down low hoping to find them in the margins, but now I am out of ideas. Anyone seen this before.
If they are out there somewhere there should be a default SU command to retrieve them and make them redock to HOME. But that is probably just a wish.
I did get one of them to return, I right clicked on one of the new ones I brought up, clicked restore and move and Wntity Info came back to the screen. Unfortunately this isn't working on the others. This happen when my screen res was high, and I thought maybe I could get the menus turned off and reboot, but , the Window Mneu shows a hyphen beside the floater name or a checkmark: no turning it off, I guess because its out of site?
If anyone else gets into this here is the answer: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=683&hilit=lost+windows
whew....

RE: Managing Groups, to Make CDs in SU
Oh yeah..... I watched that one long time ago. I thought the concept was good, but didnt know where to apply it. It's all coming together now. Thanks.
There is a really famous Hank in your neck of the woods, Cullman I think.... -
RE: Managing Groups, to Make CDs in SU
Hey Tom,
The whole world calls me Hank!
You are right about the sections and scenes, There is an intregal piece of the puzzle missing since I cannot control the data as precisely as I want.Since posting the confusing menagerie of indecipherable thought, I have been working with the Outliner tools. I think this may be part of the answer. Perhaps with some reordering the components and groups, then using the outliner to hide portions that aren't desired in a scene, i can control the 'strays' that are messing me. I am far from figuring out the Outliner, though the SU User's Guide is somewhat good.
I want to take one of the SU classes offered around the country, but the next pair of days conflict with my schedule badly. Any known tuts on Outliner out there?
and perch!
