    • FFD Sketchup - TWIST - desparate attempts fail

      Hello everybody!!

This has reference to the post made by Daniel S in the thread "SketchyFFD".
This is about making a twist with the script.

      http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=6029&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=30

A movie file is also attached in that to perform a Twist. I have been desperately attempting
to do this in vain for the last two days! The only deformation I get is a sharp bend with a fold.
It is not a smooth twist. I am not able to attach an image as I do not have any website to host
      my files.

I am very interested in doing that twist. Please help me solve this.

      Thanks in advance

      Hi everybody

I have been unable to connect to Smustard web site for the last few days.
Is the web site down? - Or is it changed or transferred to some other name?

Sorry for the dumb question - Googled it and found out that if you right click the arc and in the context menu click the "point at centre" it puts a construction point at the centre.

    • How to find centre of an arc

      Hello everybody

Is there a way to find the centre of an arc in SU?

i.e If I arbitrarily drew an arc with the arc tool and then want to mark
the centre of that arc, how do I do it?

For circles there is a ruby to find the centre. This does not work for an arc.

      Hello

Here is the holes.rb script. Also I have attached opener.rb which also does the same thing. I think it is from Smustard - I do not remember. But I use this extensively to cut holes.
      Makes holes
      This also makes holes

      Hope this helps

Thanks everybody. Tracing over the arc or circle is certainly the best way.
But if you have many curves, then you are doing them again in SU. So it
looks like there is no straight way of solving the import ACAD curves
in SU. I have to try out this Weld ruby.

      Thanks once again

Thanks for the replies. IMO I think I tried out all options for the circular
solid entities available in AutoCAD. Still the problem is there. es, I also
tried merge coplanar faces when importing into SU. That also did not work.
Looks like the only option is to do those curved objects in SU!

Wow! What you have got from that CAD model is really good.
I wonder if it has been worthwhile of your time to convert
it from CAD rather than starting fresh in SU. I have just posted
a new topic (to be solved) regarding curved surfaces imported
      from AutoCAD solid model.

Your SKP model shows smooth curved surface. How did you get that?
That should solve my problem!(I appreciate your patience).

    • AutoCAD to SketchUP - problems with curved surfaces

      Hello everybody!

I have my basic modelling done by a freelancer in AutoCAD (since SU is still
not so popular here in India) and then I import the model (ACIS solids) in SU
and I add more features etc. and then paint them with textures and then render
them in Kerkythea - which has become my favourite renderer.

The problem is all curved surfaces and circular objects imported from the DWG file
are heavily faceted. I have to pick each face to paint it with a colour/texture.
Quite often some circular surfaces get imported as broken entities with holes on
the surfaces which become very difficult to patch it up. The very idea of getting
the modelling done outside the office (to save time) gets defeated in the time taken
to patch up the surfaces when lot of circular surfaces are involved. Of course there
is no such problem when there are no curved entities.

I tried increasing the arc and circle smoothness in Acad with no improvements in SU.

Please kindly help me in solving the problem

      Thanks in advance

      Thanks Pilou

I was very badly in need of this kind of a script.
I want to hide all objects which are unselected.
i.e. an equivalent of Max's Alt-Q which hides everything
      that is not selected.

No, I do not have the latest Quicktime. I have Quicktime 7 - the version that out a
      year back or so.

I do not have problems with the ensharpen codec. Those tutorials are running fine.
It is with the movies (real cinema movies - trailers downloaded)that the problem
      exists.

Anyway I shall try out with the latest version of Quicktime.

      Hi everybody !

If you download this latest driver for 8600 or 8800 series cards (for Windows XP),
the problem with the sky is eliminated.

But the Quicktime movie will not play okay whatever you do. It was working with the
previous driver with the work-around I had mentioned already.

This just for updating the information.

    • RE: Installed new graphics card - display problem

Thank you all so much for the replies and help.

My working settings (which I prefer to have) are: Antialiasing at 4x,
Sky turned on. I like to see the model with smooth edges even when I
work. That is one of the reasons that I bought the card for.

My operating system is Windows XP - SP2. My card is Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB
      DDR2, supporting Direct X 10.

My computer is a Desktop Pentium Core2 Duo - 1.8 GHZ, with 2 GB DDR2 RAM
and with a 17 inches (4:3) Flat panel LCD monitor.

In fact I am now becoming contended with the work-around. I have disabled
floating toolbars - have only docked toolbars. Turn the sky off and have a blue
background instead. With these SU is working quite fine. I find SU quite
fast with this card (I have been without any add-on graphics card for so long

      • so the difference I see is quite amazing).

I did not and still do not want to put money in expensive graphics cards like
Quadro FX series. This card is working fine with AutoCAD and 3ds Max also.
But I am really not bothered about with AutoCAD and 3ds Max. I primarily prefer
to work with SketchUP for conceptual 3d.

      Thanks again

      P.S.

By the way, the problem with the Quicktime movie was accidentally solved
by me. If I open 2 Quicktime movie windows simultaneously, it works. If
I close the first window both windows close. Funny behaviour - but it
      is atleast working!

      Thanks,

I installed the driver that came in the CD with the card.

No I do not have intellimouse nor its drivers.

I just googled about this problem and found out that lot of people are
having the same problems with this card. The solution seems to turn off the sky
and have a colour instead. Then for the selection window, antialiasing has to be
turned off - then the weird display does not happen - or do not have open
toolbars when doing a selection. There does not seem to be any real solution.

    • Installed new graphics card - display problem

      Hello everybody!

I just installed a Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT 512 MB card - specifically for SketchUP.

While I am very happy with the speed of panning, orbiting and moving,
etc. I am a bit disappointed regarding the display. The sky (if turned on)
goes off or becomes black and again comes back when orbitting, panning,
etc. It does not happen when the sky is turned off and a color is used
instead. Again when a drop down menu from a toolbar is open and if I
want to select objects with window selection, the display of the objects
are wierd - they look sliced and shifted - but when no drop down menu
      is open it behaves okay.

Is it probably because the card is a Geforce and not a Quadro? My vendor
was kind enough to give me a demo 8800 GTS card for testing -
same thing happened with that also.

Even with Quicktime movies there is a big problem. Audio is okay but the
screen display is - you only see some jagged surface jittering.

Is this normal for this card - any body else experiencing this problem?

      Thanks in advance
