All the e.g. scripts, renders that Sketchup can work with makes it at great tool, and when you see work like e.g. "Silver Shadow" it makes you realise that modeling problems comes from bad skills and not from Sketchups capabilities.

      Truer words never spoken.

I'm really fed up reading these complain posts that SU7 needs this and that it needs that or people will skip to another program.
If that were the case, then why has the overall userbase of SketchUp exploded over the past two years ever since Google released a free version?

      Back to Ark's comments.
I think most people don't really utilize SketchUp's interface to speed up their framerates. For examples, is anyone:

      • ...using the 'Hide rest of model' function found in the 'Components' section of the 'Model Info' panel?
That requires a keyboard shortcut to operate in less than a second.
      • ...lowering their 'Transparency quality' [found in the 'Face Settings' section of the 'Edit' tab of the 'Styles' panel].
      • ...turning off 'Profile Edges' [found in the 'Edge Settings' section of the 'Edit' tab of the 'Styles' panel].
And this list can go on for about 30 other tweaks, including but not limited to hardware settings which you can change in your display driver software that came with your video card, along with several tweak utilities by 3rd parties. And yes they DO help.

This is not to brag, but I have a GeForce video chip based on the 7000 series which is considered old these days, and I can orbit models of up to 50000 SketchUp Faces with ease. Especially when changing the settings I mention above. And that does not mean automatically having to turn off Anti-Aliasing.

Besides the SketchUp interface being underused there are a lot of external factors which determine SketchUp's speed. CPU is a big factor yes. But memory (RAM) and the type used does also, and it certainly makes a difference whether you are using slower or faster RAM.

      • Are you running any other applications besides SketchUp?
      • Does your video card contain the latest driver for your operating system?
      • Do you start using SketchUp when first logging on to your operating system, or after having ran several programs first? Especially some versions of Windows are known for not restoring free memory and clogging up your available resources.
      • Are you running SketchUp in a Windows environment on the Mac?
SketchUp is not - and never has been - meant for high poly modeling. It was meant for sketching designs and bringing those into 3D. Not the over-the-top stuff that some people have been doing lately, really pushing SketchUp beyond its limits. That's all good and well and it certainly does arise the question if SketchUp has not outgrown the napkin modeler it was intended to be.

Regardless of all this, what most people seem to have missed, is that SketchUp has DOUBLED its framerate speed when orbiting with each new version since v4.
In v6 a lot of tweaks were introduced, among which is a very useful LoD (Level of Detail) feature which renders distant objects farther away from the camera as wireframe cubes.
Other tweaks were made which hide certain Edges from view if the framerate drops below a certain level.

What bothers me most, is that complaining about leaving SketchUp for something else. You all KNOW why you are using SketchUp and you all KNOW the feeling it gave you when you first touched it.
As a SketchUp evangelist I know like all of you that no one company has even come close mimicing SketchUp's ability. They all try and fail. Instead, they copycat everything SketchUp does. AutoCad is an example of that with their Press/Pull tool.

I don't want to go on forever with this post, but I urge each and everyone one complaining about this issue to look beyond the default settings for SketchUp and first see what YOU can do to improve its performance. Instead of relying on big G to fix your problems.

I am still a bit of a newbie with Sketchup, basically doing basic stuff, I have done a plan layout for work of a new Water Tank sales yard, stuff like that, as I said pretty basic.

But I have never seen or read of any tutorials of all these tweaks you mention.
I have just looked at the video for 4 rubies and found the video very informative and helpful.... Is it possible to get a tutorial especially a video tut on how to perform these tweaks and their main benefits. . its much easier to appreciate the knowledge past on with visual help?

last week i was having a terrible time surfing the internet: everything was very slow . i first thought it had to do with the connection where i was. then at home the problem persisted even though i have a 4mb wide band connection.

on a hunch i tried to navigate using safari and all of a sudden i was back to normal. i started to suspect firefox 3 was the culprit and ran a google search under "firefox slowness". bingo! there were hundreds of complaints describing the exact same problem i was having. even the mozilla site acknowledges the problem but there seems to be no fix in sight.

does ayone at SCF has been having the same problem?

I had the same problem, it got so annoying I actually uninstalled it and changed over to Safari and haven't had the slowness problem at all.

      Need a little help guys,

I got a new laptop about a month ago for work, I downloaded and installed the latest version of Sketchup.
I am working on a small presentation for work, the file is only about 1.8mb, but the programme has started lagging, I have Sketchup on my desktop and there is no problem, I have a CAD programme on the laptop and it runs fine.

I have the latest drivers for the video card .

Any tips on how I can get the speed up a bit?

      The laptop is:
      ASUS Notebook F3Sg Series
      Intel Core 2Duo CPU T8100@2.10GHz 2.10GHz
      2.00 Gig of Ram
      32 Bit operatping system.

Nvidia GeForce 9300M G video card with 259Mb memory

When you say you have SU on your desktop and there's no problem are you speaking specifically about this particular file? Or in general SU runs ok on your computer. It may help to provide the specs of your desktop and the skp file if that's possible. I'd try the other advice given first though as those are both crucial regardless of what the problem is.

      -Brodie

      Hi Brodie.

I changed the preferences to enable graphics acceleration on the laptop and there was a very small improvement.

I visited the site suggested by kwistenbiebel but can't seem to find my specific card on the site. ( I did assume that with a new Laptop that the drivers would be up to-date).

I put the file on the desktop, and it runs ok, there is no discernible lagging.

      The file size is 1.75KB

      The desktop is:
      AMD Athlon(th) 64 X2 Dual
      Core Processor 6000+
      3.01GHz. 3.25GB of RAM
      Physical Address Extension..

The Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

PS, I do have one cheeky question if I may.
When I turn on the shadows and set the time to 7.30 pm in January the 'Sun" is just over 90 degrees out, (the model is not facing East-West) how do I align the model to match the compass bearing?
      thanks

    • RE: Viewing You Tube videos at a higher Resolution

      @jclements said:

I found the following tip on another forum. You might like to try it out.

      @unknownuser said:

YouTube is host to a lot of user-made ... tutorial videos ..... I recently discovered that you can watch them in high resolution, which for tutorial videos is very beneficial as it shows the small details much more clearly.

Simply add "&fmt=18" to the end of a YT video address to see the high resolution version (if YT has processed it yet). So for example:

      http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=M7aJdzY8fEA

      would become

      http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=M7aJdzY8fEA&fmt=18

What a sensational tip, THANK YOU.

I am learning a couple of other programmes and the You Tube video,s have been poor quality, especially when you go to full screen, this is great .....

The high resolution videos have a resolution of 480x360 (instead of 320x240) and use 44 kHz stereo MP4 sound quality (instead of 22 kHz mono). All videos uploaded may already have high res versions, but some are still in the process of being converted.

The disadvantages are that they take longer to download, and you can't skip ahead taking advantage of non-linear streaming.

okay, very nice script... but could you please also make it work on X and Y axis? And make it so that you can select a shortcut for the tools?

Tried to edit it myself but my knowledge of ruby is lacking 🀣
[did get the 15 degrees to work though πŸ˜„ ]

I always wanted to make a rotator that is sensitive to the view. For example, it would rotate the selection around the axis that is closest to the axis from the camera to the target. If you wanted ro rotate around the Z, you could select the entities, go to Top view and press the shortcut. If you wanted to rotate around the Y axis, select the entities, go to the Front view and use the same shortcut.

      What do you think?

Cool, but I thought of an easier version [at least I think it's easier]

      Hi H

I did find that early in the piece. If its not a component it doesn't show up in the context menu..
I even used a componen from the Component library, and it didn't work..

      Not giving up πŸ˜„

Rotation 15 degrees on X axis under NUM1 shortcut
Rotation 15 degrees on Y axis under NUM2 shortcut
Rotation 15 degrees on Z axis under NUM3 shortcut

off course all rotations are from center of the component or group

now, tell me what do you think πŸ˜‰

[maybe a modification of you fantastic mover? πŸ˜„ ❓ ]

PS. Philem don't forget to create a component of your model or group it, or it won't work.

      Dear Philip,

I noticed something similar when I first tried the script. I created a cube and used the script, and nothing "apparently" happened. The cube is a nice, 4-fold axially symmetric object and looks the same when rotated 90 degrees. Try something with a feature, like a notch, to make your object asymmetric about its Z-axis.

      Kind regards,
      Bob

I didn't realise that fact about Bryce..but still no joy,

I still can't get it to work, I have drawn an object with a notch and a cut out etc. just to be sure,(attached) I even made sure the Z axis went though the part but still can't get it to work. I have even removed the plugin, restarted Sketchup, closed it down, copied the plugin back in again still no luck.. 😞

Do you have one and only one component or group selected? Does the ruby console spit out any messages? Yes, the blue axis is "up". It should spin around that axis (spins parallel to the ground plane). CB.

Yes I had only 1 component selected.
      I just reopened Sketchup
      Selected Bryce
R Clicked and selected "Rotate 90 around Z" nothing happened.
I then deleted Bryce, drew a rectacngle, pulled it into a shape, turned it into a component,
R Clicked and selected "Rotate 90 around Z" still nothing happened.

There is actually a rotate command in Jim's fantastic Mover.rb, trouble is I cant get it to work with Vista.

      Stu

      Hi Stu,
I made the entity I drew a component, R clicked and the command was there, but it didn't work, that is assuming that the Z axis is the blue one and basically goes "up". I then imported a component from the Components folder same thing: The command is there but doesn't work. What have I done wrong?
