The methods I show are to get you a feeling of what is possible with sketchUp native tools.

Gilles developped a relatively fast method, also using native tools.

I totally get the point, but I need all my time for "intersect with model". πŸ˜†

Thanks for the explanation. Looks like real work.

    • Follow vs Me Tool

I am trying to make three cylinders meet in a beautiful, rounded corner, but things look horrible.

Is there a plugin for stuff like that?

BTW, the center of a square or rectangle created with the rectangle tool or with separate lines can also be infered with two consecutive midpoint inferences from two adjacent sides.

I know. But it is not about finding centers. I learned 3D with Blender where 0,0,0 is more center than bottom left.

      Works perfect. Thank you.

    • Starting point as center of new rectangle

In Inkscape and Ai you can make the starting point a rectangle's centre by holding SHIFT while drawing.

Is there something similar in SU?

Select its 'parts' and use DrapeVertices, dropping the parts to Z=0.

If you want an orientation other than flat in the Z Rotate the curve to that axis.
Group the Curve if it might interfere with other nearby geometry.

I didn't do it that way, but while reading I realized that "scaling" should work, too, and it does.

      Thank you.

You can do it manually if you explode the curve.

I know, but I think it is a workaround.

    • 3D to 2D curve

I know that every curve has x,y and z in SU, but can I somehow "flatten" a curve?? For example setting every point's x to 0.

just uploaded the screenshot up there.

Omg. Thanks a lot. You can't imagine what I tried all day to fix the problem until I saw this little button just saying "sun".

(I just had sky dome turned to physical sky before, because I guess I also can't read properly.)

have you tried to enable the "sun"?

Yes, the sun is turned on. And I also switched the ground plane to "Application". And in SketchUp without Maxwell shadows are working.

I believe there are two versions of the Maxwell plugin - one is the paid version with resolution up to HD, and a completely free version that is resolution up to 800px and some other reduced capacities.

You are right. I was looking at the "Render Suite". Didn't realize those are two different products.

      Thank you. πŸ‘

If the limited resolution is not a problem, there are a few out there.

Limited resolution is okay, but Maxwell is just working for 30 days, too.

I don't know what to think about Kerkythea.

Everyone needs different Plugins - it depends on your work...

It's possible to make many models without ever using a Plugin, and grasping the basics [before going 'Plugin-Mad'] is to be recommended...

You are probably right, but still I guess there are some plugins every frequent SketchUp user has installed.

Ok, that is probably the right answer to the wrong question. Still overwhelming...

Do you know Blender? Core functioniality is coded in C(++?), but it also comes with a lot of scripts for the most common needs. Guess I'll write my own list of "basic ruby stuff everybody needs to add to the base installation."

I am new to Sketchup and right now completely overwhelmed by all those plugins. Can I somewhere find a up-zo-date list where they are sorted by categories - modelling, rendering, import/export, etc. - and download numbers?
