Ok, that is probably the right answer to the wrong question. Still overwhelming...

Do you know Blender? Core functioniality is coded in C(++?), but it also comes with a lot of scripts for the most common needs. Guess I'll write my own list of "basic ruby stuff everybody needs to add to the base installation."

Everyone needs different Plugins - it depends on your work...

The Plugins Index [big Red Button above here] lists all of the Plugins hosted on SCF and some others discussed here at length, with links off to their download sites.
The already linked Didier's crai library/depot contains most of these and some others [usually older], usually listed by 'type'... it can be slightly behind SCF for updated/new tools.
There's also SMustard.com, with some free and paid scripts [some essential free ones like 'weld' and 'progressbar' are available there].
In addition to that there are some individual authors' sites where their specialist tools or toolsets are available - usually for a modest cost - e.g. Artisan or 1001tools...

There are several threads where authors try to list their Top-Ten Plugins etc - search for those and see the variation.

It's possible to make many models without ever using a Plugin, and grasping the basics [before going 'Plugin-Mad'] is to be recommended... however, Plugins will let you do things that you would not try to do by hand, simply because it would take tool long to achieve manually - whilst a Plugin will do it automatically, much much quicker and consistently.

This is in relation to the too many plugins available created by kindhearted ruby scripters. I just want also to ask if too much SU plugins installed in the computer can make Sketchup run slower? Thanks.

Only install those Plugins you really need.
If they are Extensions only enable them via Preferences as needed.
Having too many Plugins will slightly increase the time needed for Sketchup to start up [because it must auto-load each one in turn], but it doesn't normally affect its operation once it's running... except that there is currently a limit to the number [~1000] of 'commands' that Sketchup can handle before the context-menu items start to 'gray-out' etc, as it gets overloaded. A 'command' is the code that is made for each toolbar-button/context-menu-item etc, so every tool that makes these adds to the total number of commands; there was a time that a few tools made repeated commands as you used them - exacerbating the issue - however, if you get current versions of tools, there are none that are now known to do this.
Just try to keep a moderate number of Plugins in use at any one time...

You are probably right, but still I guess there are some plugins every frequent SketchUp user has installed.

Does anyone know at what point do some plugins start to grey out?
My plugins folder is now at 1.10 GBs but all are working fine. I did have the greyout problem before, but I removed some unused ones and solved the problem.

When the SketchUp has allocated 1000 UI::Command objects.

What on earth do you have in your plugins folder??? Plugins are mostly just plain text files - with the occational folder with cursor, icon and webdialog resources. In no way can I see how any of that makes to to 1GB!!! 😲 😮 😕

Sounds to me that your plugins folder is in dire need of some cleaning up.

I've stopped copying my plugins folder around when I format my computer. Instead I just start to add plugins again - that way I make sure I only have the plugins I use.

thomthom, I gotta admit to being a plugin junkie, 🎉 and yeah I got way too many that I do not use, 😕 I made a new year's resolution to better manage them. 😛
You guys just gotta stop making them, I'm joking of course. And thanks by the way. 👍

A very useful plugin to add to your collection.

Thanks sdmitch, I'm in the process of cleaning out my plugins folder, got it down to only 100 megs so far. 👍

It seems that when a new version of a plugin came out, I installed it without deleting the old one, and some had several versions in there. Now to solve the "error loading" window that comes up opening SU. I got my work cut out for me.

What message is it?`It should give good leads to where the error is.
