      Hi Alan,

Yep, I'll be interested in your chocolate info as long as it doesn't lead people in to thinking I've changed sex!
      It's Mr S not Mrs S.

Actually, it's Mrs S who will be very interested in the chocolate.
I was more concerned with the socio/economic/political effects of people eating their biscuits the wrong way up! πŸ˜‰

    • The Best Mouse?

      Hi,

I hope I don't come across as too sad a person but I am really fussy about what mouse I use with my computer.
After trying various make and models, none could match the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0a model I had. This has a distinct 'ratchet notch' scroll wheel which works perfectly when using SketchUp. I hated the 'spongy' response that came with most other models. I have been holding on to my old mouse for quite some time now hoping it didn't die on me.
So, I was pleased to discover that Microsoft have released a new version of this mouse. If you would like more info, Visit: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/ProductDetails.aspx?active_tab=systemRequirements&pid=087

I'm also curious, does anyone like the 'spongy' scroll wheels.

PS. Just to provide more evidence of my 'sad' status I had a very interesting debate with family and friends about Chocolate Digestive biscuits (Don't ask!).
I maintain that the right way up (or top) of the biscuit is the chocolate coated side. Others stated that the plain side is the right way up. Ridiculous I say!
Now I know this isn't on a par with, say, the future of Western civilisation, but, what do you think?
(Sorry, if any of my American cousins don't know what I'm on about!)

      Regards
      Mr S

    • RE: Poll: Mac vs PC

      Hi,

I started out using computers for graphics work in about 1986.
So, I used Macs. I loved them. PC's simply couldn't be considered as an option then.
Today, despite all the arguments there is very little real difference between the two platforms.
The Mac still has a 'prettier' interface, but I find PC's quicker and more logical to navigate through.
PC's have a greater range of software and provide more bang for buck.

      My choice today would be:

      1. If someone else is paying, get a Mac.
      2. If I have to pay, I'd get a PC.

What a shallow human being I am!!

      Hi CraigD,

Yes, I like everything to be in order.
I will add my style preference to the default Templates folder as you suggest.
      Thanks.

      Hi Gaieus,

The Templates folder on my PC is not so simple either.
The only templates folder I could find was here:
      C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates

Nevertheless, I just created a new Templates folder in the root folder of SketchUp 6
Then in System/Preferences I pointed the Templates location to my new file.
SketchUp now loads with my own preferences. Thanks.

    • I want SketchUp to use my default style

      Hi,

I think this has been asked before, but how do you get SketchUp on launch to use the default style I have created. I prefer the original yellow select option and the "cream" and blue front and back face colours. I have made the amendments needed and saved it as: "My Default Style". But on starting SketchUp I have to choose this stlye as it insists on using its original settings. I think I remember someone suggesting creating a new file and saving it after I have chosen my own style. and then to just use this as a template file. Its a workaround I suppose, but surely I should be able to choose what my style preference is on launch?

      Any solutions appreciated.
      Thanks.

    • RE: SketchUp - Taking time out to think?

      Hi,

I am also working in an office and control of my workstation is mostly in the hands of the IT guys.
However, lots of good tips there concerning Defender which I will look in to with my home computer.
I didn't know it was also capable of "good housekeeping" with regards to redundant files etc. Thanks.

It does seem that the autosave feature was the real culprit.
I have altered it to save every 30 minutes.
I always manually save anyway every 10 minutes or so, saving the files with incremental file names (001, 002, etc).
Yes, I could be described as paranoid!

Thanks again for all the help offered.
It's what makes this place special.

    • SketchUp - Taking time out to think?

      Hi,

Whilst working in SketchUp over the last few weeks I have been experiencing some weird behaviour.
I can be working away when for no obvious reason the screen "locks" and the hour glass cursor appears.
Similar to how SketchUp behaves when exporting a 2D image.
It is as if the program has decided that I have taken an action that requires it to do some serious calculations.
This is happening every five or ten minutes and each "lock-up" can last for about 10-30 seconds.
      It then returns to normal.
The complexity of the scene is not the problem. (It's a simple scene).
I have the latest version of SketchUp.
I have the latest certified graphic drivers.
I have a decent spec computer system

Does anyone have any ideas on this.
It is starting to irritate me like mad!

    • RE: Vray for SketchUp? - A Black Art?

OK Guys, thanks for the thoughts.
I'm pretty sure the company I work for is considering VRay as an option for producing professional quality renders.
I was hoping to gain some knowledge of it before it is introduced.
Kerkythea may be good for me to look at for my own use.

      Thanks

    • Vray for SketchUp? - A Black Art?

      Hi,

Just downloaded the final release of Vray for SketchUp.
2 Versions were available for download.
One was called the 'Academy' version, so I'm assuming that this is a free 'not for commercial use' version.
I can only assume this because like everything else to do with Vray, getting information or tutorials on how to use this software seems next to impossible.
I couldn't see any information on their website explaining what the differences between these two version are. It just seems to be a case of 'look at our Rhino' sections to get an idea of how this software works.
ASGVIS needs to take a look at how @last software provided clear instruction and video tutorials. This could help bring a complicated bit of software like VRay to life!
Otherwise you left feeling that actually using this software needs some sort of Black Art skills. Oh, and they need to change their name: 'ASGVIS' .
How are you supposed to pronounce that correctly? πŸ˜‰

If any one knows of a link to a plain english introduction on how to use VRay, I would be very grateful.

      Regards
      Mr S.

      Done!

It's almost unbelievable that Google would even consider allowing such a valuable asset such as CraigD to no longer be a part of SketchUp.
Never mind just renewing his contract.
He should have been made a permanent member of staff a long time ago!

    • RE: Failed to Save ...2D Image Export

      Hmm...

It would seem that this should be investigated further.
I also have experienced this problem.
I upgraded to the latest incremental update of SketchUp (6.0.1099) hoping this "bug" had been fixed.
No joy. The problem still exists.
The frustrating thing is there is no real indication as to what could be the cause of this.
You just receive an error message saying "Failed to save".
Does anyone know if this is actually being looked in to by Google?
