      Hi Guys,

I wanted to see if anyone might be able to help me figure out what's causing errors in this model. The odd thing is that it doesn't seem to throw out any actual errors, the model just gets to a certain point in the script and stops. No errors, but using any tool, trying to get out of the script or going to revert causes either Windows Runtime Errors or BugSplat.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm helping out someone in the office who set up the model, so I have somewhat limited knowledge of her workflow, especially with a bit of a language barrier.

      Thanks,

      Matt

Haha perfect timing for SketchUp 2014. Looks like I'll be learning Ruby 2.0.0 instead!

Sounds good gents, thanks. Ruby 1.8 it is then.

I think that'll be the better choice so that if I write something up and it doesn't work, at least it won't be as likely to be a version-dependent syntax error, instead it'll be my own syntax error 😳

Looking forward to learning Ruby (in time) and seeing any of you at Base Camp!

      Thanks Aerilius,

I'll probably just go with 1.9.3. Seems to be the most supported in general, the documentation's been out forever.

...and yes, I am indeed enjoying Why's Poignant Guide, because Chunky Bacon.

Thomthom, any preference or suggestion as to 1.9.3 vs 2.0.0?

    • What version of Ruby should I start learning?

      Hi guys,

I wanted to see if I could get some feedback on which version of Ruby I should learn and install. I know that SketchUp currently uses 1.8.6, and support for 1.9.3 or 2.0.0 is something we could only take a guess at.

I'm running Windows machines almost exclusively, so I wanted to see what version I should use. I know there's ways (at least on Mac with RVM) to switch between, but it's pretty over my head at the moment, so I'd like to keep it to as few variables as I can for learning. I snagged a copy of the Pick-Axe for 1.9.3 (and 2.0.0 I think) and am reading through that and reviewing "Why's Poignant Guide" as well.

Let me know your thoughts if you'd be so kind, thanks!

      @pcmoor Thanks!

These might take me some time to go through and understand, and certainly I'll likely have some questions for you, but I really appreciate you taking the time to build something like this.

      Hello!

I'm getting this error. I'm using Fredo's Additional Plugin Folders script to control who in our firm has access to which plugins, just for reference. Any thoughts on what it might be?

      Thanks!

    • Exposing Ruby Code?

      Hi guys,

My apologies if there's already a post on this topic, I may not have found the right wording to find it. I'm looking to see if there is any way to work in SketchUp with the ruby console open, and have it display the code that runs when doing normal tasks. Maya does this with MEL, so when you move and object, it displays the transform information and the "underlying code" (If you can call it that).

I'd like to do this to help me learn Ruby. It's been a challenge so far with as little free time as I get, and thought this might be helpful. If it isn't possible with the way the API is set up, oh well.

      Thanks!

Well that'll help to explain why I had such trouble trying to find it in the API docs! Thanks TIG, I'll look into that one!

    • RE: Dynamic Rafter Tails

      Thanks @TechDave02,

I'd thought about a similar type of component, but so far my trouble with having anything scale inside a Dynamic Component is that any textures that are applied to the portion with scaling become distorted, which somewhat kills it for the way we use models in the office.
Otherwise I think it could work for me. I'd love to be able to control the slope angle dynamically relative to the wall to which it's glued, but I think I've got to get the basic idea down before I go too crazy.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Textures on a dynamic component

I've come across the same issue with the textures in DC's, and I think that's the primary reason I haven't bothered to learn them in depth, despite their usefulness. I'm just brainstorming here, but does anyone (especially the code gurus out there) think there would be any way to add a function/script that would reset or normalize the DC's UVQ coordinates when ever you hit "Apply" to make changes? I'm not experienced with Ruby yet to know if that's nonsense or not πŸ˜„

    • Dynamic Rafter Tails

      Greetings gurus,

I was wondering if anybody might be able to help me get moving on a project I've been trying to figure out for a while, with no success. I'd like to make a series of Dynamic Rafter Tails for myself and my firm, but I can't really even figure out where to start.

I've already made a series that glues themselves to the proper plain, has descriptions, correct and useful thumbnails embedded, but I'd love to be able to control the roof slope and the eve/overhang length as well. As an added bonus (if possible), it'd be amazing to control the shape of the tail cut as well!

Let me know if you guys have any idea on how to approach.

      Thanks!

      Matt

Thanks Charlie, I hadn't though about using scenes as place holders in quite that manner, but that makes a lot of sense. I'll try that!

    • RE: Best GPU for Sketchup + Thea GPU Rendering?

I can say that I've had a very good experience with a Quadro card. My machine is as follows:

      BOXX 4920 Xtreme
      Hex-core i7 @ 4.5GHz, 32GB ram, Quadro 4000.

Granted, I know a lot of the performance is due to the processor speeds, but the graphics card has always been more than enough for anything I've ever thrown at it. I've worked on an model detailed enough to be used for construction details and was in excess of a million faces, and it was faster than most 20 mb models on my work machine. I would heartily recommend the Quadros. They're pricey, but totally worth it.

    • RE: Applying Styles to Scenes without refreshing screen

Thanks Charlie, I have used this method, though I have to say I never even thought about using the scene manager in list view and turning off thumbnails. I'll try that.

I'd still love to see if there's a way to do this without having to have the style active in the view port to apply to the scenes. I reason I'd like this is that we're doing massive models with a custom style that just takes forever to load, especially with shadows on, sometimes upwards of 2-3 minutes depending on the view complexity. I'd be nice not having to wait for the style to load to apply it.

If there's any thoughts, cool, if not, I appreciate you guys reading it!

      Thanks!

    • Applying Styles to Scenes without refreshing screen

      Hi Guys,

I'm going through and doing sketchy style view studies of large (30+) numbers of interior views. The thing is, I'd love to be able to apply styles to individual scenes without ever having to load the style in the main window. In simpler terms, I only want to see the style on export. Is there a way of disabling and re-enabling this.

Doing shots like this while waiting for a complex sketchy style to load on every scene takes hours to do, where as if that could be disabled, it'd take me minutes.

      Thanks!

      Matt

PS I added a few examples of the different scenes exported and the finished version.
