    • How do make a 3d model of this?

      Hello pros,

I found this NASA site where I can download topography images. I´ve seen these black and white images before and I heard they can be (or are ment to be) used to create 3d topography models. The problem is that I don´t know how to do that, once I have the images. Can someone help me out? 👍

    • Good site with free SU models?

      Hello,

I have a problem finding sites with free SU compatible models. The sites I end up at usually only have a couple of free chairs and a box. Seems like they use the "free models" to fish for visitors to buy models.

Are there any good sites out there with a larger library of SU compatible models?

      😄

    • One click animation export with Vray render?

      Hello,

I saw a youtube tutorial on how to export an SU animation with Vray render, and that involved alot of clicking and tweaking in the Vray option menu. Maybe I´ll get there one day, but I had a hard time understanding half of what the guy was doing, and he did quite alot.

I might be asking for a bit much here I suppose, but is it possible to export an animation with Vray rendering without doing all the tweaking in Vray? A plugin for me which rendered everything the way I set up the scence in SU and Vray with just a couple of clicks would be really helpfull for an amature like myself.

💭 Just to clarify; I´m not asking for a plugin or help to get around setting up the Vray render options, I understand I have to do that. But once I´ve set both the render options and the animation scence in SU, can I easily export the two combined?

      😎

I also wish I spoke fluent english so I could explain myself better..

Yes, I´ve tried using using a mesh, but I just found a tutorial for creating water in Vray, thats the kind of photorealism I´m looking for.

      Thanks!

Thank you, I actually tried world machine earlier. What about a "bump map" for water? I think I read somewhere that you create realistic water with something called bump map. I haven´t figured out how to use that in Vray but I guess I should ask about that in the Vray section

    • Creating water

Is there anyplace I can look to learn how to create good looking water, with waves and stuff? Preferably not involving pushing and pulling on a mesh, which I find great for creating terrain, but not water.

A plug-in like Grow but for water would be nice... The FLOW plug-in! 👍

I use V-ray for render by the way.

"do you export pdf or eps from SU on your mac?"

Like I wrote, I was refering to Illustrator files. If there´s was any difference with other software I don´t know. Skylabridge wrote; "I have a sketchup file of a fairly complicated building that I would like to export as a 2D graphic to work on in Adobe Illustrator. I need to get vector line quality results". Both .eps and .pdf will open as vector (=vector quality) in Illustrator.

    • RE: Exporting as a 2D graphic

Regarding quality, after eight years of doing infographics for seven different newspapers, sending vectorfiles as both .eps and .pdf to print, none of my colleagues has ever noticed or heard of any difference in quality between the two. We would know if there was one that is noticable to the eye...

This goes for Illustrator files. If there´s a difference with other software I don´t know.

have you tried exporting as .eps?
an 18MB skp takes less than a minute and produces a 2.5MB .eps...
it also produces a better quality image than .pdf export...

the other thing is, what are your 'Display Style' set to before export?
      john

They´re vector in both .eps and .pdf. No difference in quality. Vector is vector.

It doesn't appear in the context menu because, as written, it only recognizes right clicks on components which what you asked for. Also, it will find only components in the component selected. Do you want it to treat groups and components equally?

Yes, that would be great. When dowloading models there´s often a mixture of groups and components.
Personaly I cant really tell the difference between the two and usually just click on "make component".

OK, thanks I found it. It seems to be an easy way to select different groups within a model, but I didn´t find a way to select everything and change the colour.

I think SDMitch plugin tip is just what I need! Going to check that out

Yes, that looks about right, but I don´t understand what you´re getting at? The "Colour Nested Components" doesnt show in my right-click-list. Is it a plugin? I can´t seem to find it in the plugin store

Yes it is a "plugin" and needs to be loaded or copied to the Plugins/Extensions folder

Thanks I will try it 👍

EDIT: I put the file in the pluginsfolder, restarted sketchup, but its not there when I right-click on a group or component containing other groups or components.
