    • Modeling Historical Buildings Standing and Not.

Just wanted to get a feel for how many modelers on this forum model historical buildings still standing, and those that have gone away?

Thought it would be interesting to find out what resources are used, and how it might be playing out in painting a better historical record for your Town, City or Village.

I personally enjoy digging up information and finding those treasured pictures that give you just the right view for a detail you weren't able to see before.

      Anyone else?

Modeling from Sanborn maps is pretty much what I do. I have a San Jose library card which gives me access to the California maps and at various times I've had access to NC, UT, MT, and NY maps as well.

I've found that it helps a whole lot if the building is still extant and can be seen in birdeye's view in MS Bing. Sometimes Google street view is clear enough to also be useful but a lot of times the Bing images is good enough.

Do you have any question's in particular?

Thanks so much for your input Dave. I have sent a PM to you with a question.

      Thanks again.

Does anyone know where one could find a free resource for the above mentioned map format?

San Jose Public Library has them, but you need to have a library card account to access the database, and you can't get a card online. You have to show up in person. So I thought I would ask if anyone else has a local library that has these maps available online in digital format?

      Appreciate the help folks.

600 million people use GE? I find that HARD to believe. Maybe that number uses GoogleMaps apps (many of which dont even have the 3D option) Do you have the numbers for Brazil?

The number 600 million were counts of unique activations of the Google Earth program. And are accurate. I believe those are global numbers.

Yes, sure. Also, if a company logo IS on the building, it should NOT be rejected for advertisement at all if you do not "photoshop" it off the photo. Although I have seen "misunderstandings"...

Here is an example of what Gaieus is talking about. I did this for my brother in law's practice.

Just a heads up for folks about Shaderlight.

They responded very quickly to our needs, and within a mater of moments, we had an FTP link to a download with a fix.

Martin Cox and the support team at Shaderlight are a class act. Once alpha, and beta testing is done, a program worth looking into guys and gals.

Thanks for all your help Martin.

Downloaded and installed the alpha 1 shaderlight program for Sketchup, and got this error message when I opened Sketchup.

      Error Loading File Shaderlight.rb

      Anyone else having this issue?

Send a notice to support, but thought I would try here also.

      Thanks for any input.

So if you would like, we can upload what Linea has done, or wait until you two collaborate on something.

Which reminds me. Lee, I still need for you to upload the drawings you have of the Hull Carnegie to the 3D Carnegie directory on Google Docs, so I can get a blog page setup. Include any graphics you feel you would want to be part of that page. If I can get this done, it will give you a page to link your GE model to.

      Thanks.

Linea? Do you think any of the school kids would be interested in being a part of a project like this?

No ground breaking modelling involved but I did a nice project with a class of eleven year olds yesterday to design a swale (man made irrigation channel)to alleviate flooding at their school. Not too shabby for a mornings work, although
once they found 3DW there was no stopping them!. This is part of a wider exhibition at Arc in Hull (see second link). Hull was severely flooded in 2007.

One of the first Carnegie models he is working on is in Hull. His name on this forum is Leedeetee.

Just thought I would mention that. Might be a neat project to get those 11 year olds excited about being involved in. And yourself of course. Lots of Carnegie's in the UK, and I'm sure Lee would appreciate the help.

      yes

So residential dwellings are the only buildings that qualify for this contest? Just wanting to be clear on this. Is it because there are limitations to the program? Feel free to explain better. Please!

You wrote "exclude" and I read "include." Sorry about that. You are welcome to design and submit any type of building commercial or non commercial, airports, libraries, churches, really anything as long as your submission resembles a building.

Got it! Crystal clear. Thank you so much for your response.

You know you're either addicted to, or need a break from SketchUp when you're driving around looking at stuff and trying to visualize how to do it in Sketchup. It's true! Looking at houses and other object, I immediately go into the thought process of 'extrude that, offset and use the follow me tool, ohh that would work nicely with XYZ ruby'.

Is there hope for me? 😲

      Rick

Yep! It's called "The Sickness." And as you can see from some of the post, some have it real bad. From one sicko to the next, welcome. You know when you really have it bad, when you write a book about it. That is a sure sign that you are incurable. I think forum moderation is right up there also!!

They have found one cure though. Drinking massive amounts of coffee seems to help, or at least keeps you doing thing so fast you don't notice. Still working on that one, but have a tentency to lean towards just drinking a lot, no matter what it is. πŸ‘

      Hi all,

      Another question, I'm afraid.

Just wondering how you guys would be able to tell me the best way to model old ruinous walls, similar to the one below ...

      http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/29/21/2d/wall-ruins.jpg

I like to model old buildings and am currently modelling a huge ruin in my lunch breaks at work.... I would usually just draw a wall, push/pull to correct height, then make it 'jagged' further, but this is quite time intensive - especially for large ruined churches etc. Would there be a quicker way around this particular problem of mine?

Wow! The Hull Carnegie was in worse shape then I thought! LOL! Looks like an interesting exercise Lee.

Sonoma's Carnegie "library" sits on the Plaza, the only building in the central park area besides the city hall. It is now a visitor's bureau. A few years ago, a renovation provided an elevator and upgraded restrooms in the rear.

      I don't have a photo but I found this one http://www.flickr.com/photos/stones55/4177485595/

Your library is really much more developed and ornate.

      How about this one!

I'm sure you could do a much better job, and since your local, could get much better photos for modeling then I had to work with. Give it a shot. With them doing a renovation, you most likely could get a hold of some CAD drawings. If you can, the ace modeler on our team, Museummaker could pull up a real detailed model for the rest of the historic record. Like the one we are working on for Paso Robles.

      Check it out here.

Please contact me, and we can talk more about it if you would like. Your connection could be some great help for us. Do you have Skype?

EDIT: I recalled that there has been a Carnegie Library most places I've lived. Check this out. This is where I first went for my Dr. Seuss books: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File;Carneige_Art_Museum_2,_Oxnard.jpg

Museummaker did a nice job on this one!

Wonderful library model. Of course it is very much like the library in our town. Haven't seen any model so far that really looks like an old California Valley Oak. Would be useful. Good luck.

You are so right Pbacot. Your comment about the library building being very much like the one in your town is very common. The Carnegie library buildings are fixtures in many towns, and creates a great opportunity for those who would want to model their own towns Carnegie.

Ours is a very community connected project, which makes the historical record that much more colorful.

Where do you live Pbacot? I would love to see what your Carnegie Library looks like.

I looked at the above linked page, not sure what render app is used, looks a little like Irender.

Is the model of the above available for download? the reason I ask is to create a 'Render this' thread where anyone can get a chance at rendering the model with landscape. Could make for a very interesting thread where a wide variety of engines can be tested on the scene, I would lean towards Vue personally as it has awesome vegetation and great atmospheres.

That sounds like a very interesting idea Solo. I'll have to let Museummaker make the call on that one. It's his baby, and he has done all the work on that end of things, so I'll defer to him.

What rendering app are you using?

The reason I ask is if you are using a studio based render app then the solution is simple, however if using a plugin and restricted to SU's low poly threshold then a good solution is more challenging.

      Thanks Solo,

Museummaker, a member here is doing the rendering for our project. so I will need to contact him to find out what he is using.

I don't know if you can tell by looking at some of what we are working on, but here is the WIP on the finished page for the historic record. http://pasoroblescarnegie.blogspot.com/
