On the main SketchUp website, there’s a really nice visual showing people running about a rendered image of a house.

Is this something simple to do? And is this something that can be added natively within SketchUp? Or is this done using another software and superimposed?

Small feature request, but I'd like the ability to show area in a different measurement to the drawing dimensions.

I'm not sure how things work in America, but in the UK and Europe detailed architectural work is drawn in millimetres, and square metres are used for areas.

When a client asks: how much paint do I need, seeing 8483472mm2 is quite confusing. I currently have to switch the drawing units, see that it's 8.5m2, then convert back to mm to continue modelling.

    • Covert to Components?

You've made a group and duplicated multiple identical versions, then you realise 10 minutes later... hmm, it would have been a lot better if these were components.

But it's a catch 22 as to whether you should undo your current progress and lose 10 minutes, for the sake of hopefully gaining 10 minutes if and when you make changes to those groups.

Basically, is there anyway to convert multiple individual groups into multiples of the same component... or a plugin that converts them?

    • RE: File got pretty large...now, cannot open.

Have a look and see if your RAM is running out. If it is - make sure you close all internet tabs, photoshop and as many other programs as you can.

Also try and reduce the size of the SketchUp window to as small as possible while the file is opening - to the size of a postage stamp if possible.

This reduces the demand on the computer and has helped me open files in the past that were too large. Then after it has fully loaded, you can gradually increase the size of the window and trim some of the file size out by clearing out some of the model and re-saving the file.

    • RE: EGPU's and Sketchup

Does the GPU actually make much of a difference to SketchUp itself? I've heard conflicting comments, and I guess with the eGPU it's easy to see the difference as you can just unplug it.

    • RE: Sketchup Pro 2018 on MacBook Pro

What are you looking to do with Sketchup Pro?

SketchUp purely uses one computer core, but rendering plugins will use more than one.

Using this website, compare the single core scores and see how all the Mac's stack up against each other: https://browser.geekbench.com/mac-benchmarks

The MacBook you are looking at has a single core score of 4496.

I'm still currently using a 2013 13" MacBook Pro with a single core score of 3314, and on this machine I'm able to build fairly detailed architectural models with ease, complete with lots of custom textures etc. The machine you are looking at is approximately 50% quicker than my MacBook, and so I don't think you'd have any issues at all.

I completely forgot about "Print to PDF"!

It'll be interesting to see how that effects file size!

Thanks for the tip about using "Preview"!

      1. Rendering quality is found under "File" > "Document Setup..." > "Paper".
3 and 4 are found under "File" > "Export..." > "Options..."

If I get no replies, I might spend a day doing some different exports and try to compare them all - both on screen and on paper.

It's amazing how many different options there are for changing the quality!

    • File Sizes...

      Hi,

I've been working on a few files lately, where the PDF size ends up above the email size limit. As a workaround, I've been sending clients a dropbox link... but some have ended up confused as to how to access the files.

Therefore I was wondering what options people use within Layout to end up with something at a decent quality, but with a low file size.

As I see it, I have the following ways to change quality:

      1. Setting the drawings to Vector, Hybrid or Raster.
      2. Changing the "Rendering Quality" in the Document setup (between Low, Medium and High).
      3. Changing the "Image Resolution" under options when I export a PDF (between Low, Medium and High).
      4. Changing the JPEG compression slider under options when I export a PDF (slider between Smaller File > Higher Quality).

Which options remove the most bulk from the file without affecting the image quality too much?
      I'm currently using 1. Hybrid, 2. High, 3. High, 4. Highest Quality.

    • Opposite of Sub divide

      Hi,

I've imported a file into sketchup that's been subdivided by another program. There's so many divisions, that it's extremely difficult to orbit the model.

Is there a plugin that does the opposite of sub divide; I want to reduce the number of faces and simplify the geometry.

Anyone know if a plugin exists?

Or even some ideas on what to search for!

Thanks!! Didn't realise I had auto save turned on in Layout (I've always had it disabled within Sketchup).

Have now turned it off, as I prefer to manually save using a keyboard shortcut at specific points when I'm working.

    • RE: This document’s file has been changed by another application

The files are saved in Dropbox, but it’s only my computer that has access to Dropbox. This seems to be happening most times I press save in Layout, even if I haven’t made changes in SketchUp.

So while working on one file within Layout, the message comes up most of the times I press save (every few minutes or so).

Nothing bad seems to be happening... but it’s scary seeing a message like this!

    • This document’s file has been changed by another application

While I'm working and saving in Layout, I keep seeing this message but can't understand why. It's only me working on this file (no-one else can access it). I've only got Sketchup and Layout open, and this message comes up most of the times I press save (even if I've made no changes within Sketchup).

It's not causing any problems that I can see, but I would like to know why this is happening!

This document’s file has been changed by another application since you opened or saved it.

The changes made by the other application will be lost if you save. Save anyway?

    • Can't access 3D Warehouse from within Sketchup

      Macbook - Sierra
      Running Sketchup Pro 2018
Use Safari as default browser, but have Chrome installed as well. Both work absolutely fine.

Was using Sketchup Pro 2018 trial version without issue, but upon adding my licence information, I see and plain white page with the following error message when I try and open 3D Warehouse within Sketchup:

      @unknownuser said:

      chromewebdata?cv=m18.0.16976&ctyp=sp&hl=en-US

The 3D Warehouse website works absolutely fine, just not from within Sketchup... any ideas??

Edit: Just to add - Extension Warehouse works perfectly. Opens, downloads and installs. It's just 3D warehouse that suddenly won't work from within Sketchup!

    • Possible to change units yet? - If not, feature request!

In Sketchup 2018, is it possible to change the default template working units, rather than creating a new model?

I mainly work in mm as I'm modelling, but when I click on a face to see it's area, mm is a useless measurement as no-one uses mm2, they always use metres squared (m2). E.g. A typical area will be shown as "99118806 mm²"

Ideally, it would be great to have a unit selector for the entity info box??

Alternatively, is it possible yet (or if not, could it be requested?), that the default template units could be changed after a file has been created.

The landscape templates show m2, but then I have to manually add "mm" to every measurement I type in, which adds a lot of time to my workflow.

    • Scene Delay Changing

Sketchup 2018. Exporting a video - 3.5 second transition time, 3 second scene delay. Using a MacBook Pro.

Export works as it should, but when it gets near the end of the export, it suddenly skips and says it's complete.

When I look at the finish video, it does include all the scenes and all the transitions, but for the last few remaining scenes, it removes the scene delay.

The full video is 1:24 and one ended up at this length.

Since then, one has ended up at 1:00 long (so a lot of the last scene delays were skipped), and after clicking export again, the last one is 1:07 - so better, but not 100%.

I changed nothing between the 1:00 and 1:07 export, so it seems to be intermittently deciding how many of the remaining scenes to skip the delay for.

All the transitions are of equal speed, but the scene delays start at 3 seconds and then randomly change to either none (or possibly 1 second).

    • RE: Way Too Long For Exported Images!

Couple of things I can think of:

Is this just on one particular model?

If you try an older version of Sketchup, does this change anything?

Are the fans on the computer suddenly a lot louder? Is the computer a lot hotter than it usually is?

Update: Ok, it looks to be that because it was a simple model, that's why Sketchup got confused.

    • Section Fill Problem 2018

It keeps filling the wrong bits!

The building doesn't even have a roof drawn, and as it's early in the design, it's very simple geometry.

Can't get my head around this! I can't even work out why it works on part of the building, but not the other rooms?!

      Any ideas??
