    • Intuos Creative Stylus 2 for iPad

Just saw this announced today, and i have to admit im very impressed, http://www.wacom.com/en/de/creative/intuos-creative-stylus
Iwas tempted to buy the Cintiq Companion yesterday to make my life easier when it comes to texturing my creations but the price tag was €1200, then this poped up today and is only
€99,90, an iPad retails at around €500 so do the math, €600 Vs €1200.

So what ye all think, is it worth it?

Well it did a lot better than i expected, i was surprised it got the attention it did, we are currently revamping the game for release on IOS and Android, windows will get an update to improve the gameplay, it was designed to be difficult and challenging but the casual gamer wants an easy mode, so we are working on that at the moment πŸ‘

Hey Mike, interesting tech there, would be nice to model in SU using one of these, im a believer in virtual reality products, i dont know if you saw my post earlier on the oculus rift http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=72%26amp;t=51973

I have one of these and i can experience my creations in a virtual environment, i can even walk around my creations as if they are there in front of me, even entering virtual buildings.

Adsm s that just using lightup or in unity? im aware lightups lighting can be imported directly into unity and textures can also be baked, can you link us to a tutorial on how to do these, nice render btw πŸ‘

    • RE: Unreal 4 Engine

I agree, Unreal4 is beautiful, but cryengine looks even better imo, but the simplicity of Unity is second to none, Unity is growing fast is the preferred game engine to indie game developers, over the last 5 yrs Unity has changed so much and i can see it dominating all game engines in the future, i also agree with the UV mapping in SU, its so behind the times and should be addressed, but this is an argument that's been going on for yrs, Google and now Trimble never saw the benefits of SU for game development, iv seen Naughty dog, cloud imperium, and even Kens beautiful models used for sim city and Rift, all developed in SU first, then used in other 3D applications like Maya or 3D Max to be cleaned up for game use, i designed I,Marble in SU, textured and so on all in SU, never did i bring it into other applications other than Unity, but it did have some problems, but workable, the game turned out better than i taught, but 5 yrs ago SU was unusable in game engines, it just wasn't compatible, but its changing slowly, i don't think Trimble really care for game development so they more than likely wont develop it further for us game developers, its a pity tho, i even see that there has been an SU game developers stand at the last two basecamps, i believe Trimble need to look into this not just for game developers but i can see rendering engines being obsolete in the not so distant future and replaced with game engines, game engines are so much better, not because they are free to use but because we can see our creations in a virtual environment, iv even used my models in an environment where you can experience it using the oculus rift, a virtual reality headset, and its amazing, Facebook even bought out the company this yr for 2 billion, if they see potential then why don't we, i can see this also being used for showcasing a virtual plan of a house before its even built in the real world, i'm currently working on a virtual game for the oculus rift and all models are developed in SU, in fact i joined a community for indie game developers and i haven't come across any indie game companies that don't use SU, Trimble need to wake up and smell the coffee, make it more game friendly, UV friendly, most think that game engines only use quads, they don't, all game engines convert quads to tris, the most basic of polygons, quads are only an illusion in other 3D applications, UV mapping is the main issue, i could talk for hrs about this topic but im gonna let it go because in reality Trimble wont do anything about it, unless a memeber of the SU team can prove me wrong and tell us different, i hope they do πŸ˜’

I used sketchup to both build and texture all models in this game, the game engine i used was Unity, i never had a problem with my UVs when importing into unity

    • LOW POLY GALLERY

Hey folks, i remember a while back someone was looking for tutorials on how to make Low Poly models, at the time i wasnt the best when it came to low poly modelling so i set off and learnt myself for game dev reasons, during that time i spent learning the best methods i eventually discoverd low poly models can look great with the right texture applied to give the illusion of a highly detailed model, so i said i would show you all what i have learnt by showing you a little tutorial on how i did it.

Step 1: First i searched the web for a 10x10 Grid and imported into SU, i then devided the texture into 10x10 squares as you can see by the verts in the image below.
      GRID.png

Step 2: I removed a section from the grid as you can see on the left that i wanted to use to construct my low poly model, as you can see that section is already UV mapped from the first step.
      CUTOUT.png

I then folded the cutout section to form a box, note that the UVs are still wrapped to the box. i kept the original cut out to view it from above for the next step.
      MODEL_LAYOUT.png

Step 3: I then opened up the texture in Gimp and painted over the squares i used in the cut out portion i used to form the UV mapped box.
      PAINT_1.png

And now look at the box after the paint over.
      PAINT_2.png

Step 4: So we have a bus but it needs some work so we can place wheels underneath, so i carefully added more verts so i could create wheel arches.
      SPLIT_UP.png
      SPLIT_UP_PAINT.png

Step 5: Ok for my next step i need to create just 1 wheel but i wanted to use as little of the texture as possible, so i used the top left square and made a triangle and a square from its little section i painted, as seen below.
      WHEEL_CONSTRUCT.png

Step 6: i then attached both the triangle and the square like so and duplicated it around all the way around, then i copied the outer wheel to the opposite side to form the wheel into a solid.
      wheel_2.png
      wheel_3.png

And there you have it a low poly bus
      BUS_COMPLETE.png

So just goes to show you sometimes low poly with a highly detailed texture can be as effective as a high poly model, but it doesn't stop there, i only used a small portion of the texture, so let me show you how many models you can create just by using 1 texture.
      TRANSPORT_ASSETS_TILE.png
      TRANSPORT_ASSETS.jpg
All these models created with just 1 texture, i hope you enjoyed my short tutorial and i hope most of all some of you learnt from this, i would also like to see others post low poly models here for us all to see and learn from, thanks for taking time to read my tutorial πŸ˜„
