Not really a texture size in dimesions as much as it's size in kb. Are they all jpg, or png?
      How many different textures?

There are about 60 different textures.
Most of them are.png but there all also jpegs.
I thought that on sketchup it loads them as bitmaps so the size of files doesn't matter.
Do you think I should change them to jpeg?

I run the script to remove all the materials and the model is about 8MB in size now and runs smoothly.
Do you believe it's because of the materials?
Some of the materials are about 1000x1000 and some others about 750x750
Are these sizes too big? should I scale them down a bit?
Is there any way to search if there is some specific material that causes the problems?

It's almost impossible to work without hardware acceleration on this model. Orbiting is really slow.

For the record the size of the model right now is 200MB. It's an area of 180 sq.Km. with 30+ buildings on it with many details on each of them.

      Edges 640182
      Faces 133686
      Component instances 5133

I suspect the models that are crashing have large/heavy textures right?

All the textures applied have been re sized to a 10-25% of their original file size. Average ~800x600

      Crashing while modelling:
      Any kind of model?
      Have you purged the model?
Have you tried to disable hardware acceleration? (often problems can occur due to a bad graphic card driver.)
What graphic card do you got?
Does it crash while modelling when VfSU is not installed?

Not any model just this one that is really big
Yes the model is purged though it crashed also sometimes while purging
No will try disabling hardware acceleration
      Geforce 9600 GT
      Didn't try without VfSU

First of all, what version do you use? (this is important as the behaviour of VfSU differ greatly depending on what version you're using.)

      Vray v.01.05.30

Sketchup crashes while modelling, or it crashes while rendering?

      Both!
It can crash even right after I open the model and just try to orbit a bit.
Generally it crashes all the time without any apparent reason. Or something specific that I have found out at least.
      Some examples:
1.Applied new material, crashes upon opening, barely managed to keep it open long enough to remove it. Material had been checked prior to applying in different file and worked fine. Anyways, problem solved.
      2. Save. Bug Splat. From one point on without anything different being done. I simply can not press save without it crashing. Restarting the program several times as well as the pc does the trick eventually.
      3. Casually working on the model. Lines, move and other basic orders. Crash. For no reason.
      4. Rendering. Of course this is my favorite. At least it makes some sense since it's the one moment I expect it to perform at its highest and perhaps there are a bunch of problems from memory loss, to bugs in vray, to overheating or whatever. But it crashes once more.
What's most interesting to me is that if I keep trying to do sth that makes it crash, it's eventually successful though I don't change any setting or whatever.

    • Plugin for Vray

I know that in order for vray to render correctly it has to have the faces in groups.
Since I have a pretty big model (about 200MB with the vray materials) and it's quite hard to do all the faces manually do you know if there is plugin that can do that for me?

p.s. Sketchup keeps crushing all the time and I bet it's because of the size of the model. Any possible tips for that?

    • Arroway textures on Vray for SketchUp?

Can someone help me with the values on the reflection maps on arroway textures?

On their site they say :

s050: "The specularity map; the recommended strength is 50%."

(g025) "Instead of a map, you may specify a fixed glossiness value of 25%."

So if I just want to use the second option and I have a material with g100 I just add a reflection layer which by default has Highlight Glossiness and Reflection Glossiness 1?

but what happens when the value is g025?

also what about the specular map? where do I load that? On the Maps at the reflection? or somewhere inside the reflection layer options?

      Thanx in advance

Are their normals flipped? If you set the style to use the default colour only, what does it look like then?

the faces are right. I see the white side.

I tried that copy part of the model to a new file so I can post it here and when I tried a test render there it renders just fine!
I'm trying to figure out if there is any other geometry that causes this problem now.
I'll be back with any news

I'm sure that there are no two faces and also that shadow is not an issue.
I have tried deselecting cast shadows and receive shadows and also making Vray not to render shadows and the output is still the same

    • Problem with grass on vray

Hi I'm trying to render a scene with vray
I have a problem with a grass material when I apply it on a surface that I made from contours in sketch up (so there is some hidden geometry there)
I used the material "Architectural green grass" (can't remember where I downloaded from)
When I render the image I get some strange lines on the surface of the grass where the hidden lines of the mesh are.

      http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6764/grasse.jpg

      Any suggestions?

    • How to make animation?

      Hi
I want to make an animation for a model in sketch-up and export it on Vray.
By using the default tools of sketch-up for making the scenes I can't get it to work the way I want since I need to make some turns etc and I want the animation to have a constant "movement speed" the main problem is for turns. For straight lines I can put the scenes at equal distances apart and then edit the transition time between scenes. But on turning points I can't do that and there is only one value for transition between scenes.

Basically I want to have a group of lines on which the camera will "walk" at constant speed.
Any suggestions on how to do that?

      thanks in advance

    • Need some guides for the components

is it possible to create a component and at the time of creation ton sellect "glue to any" and "cut oppening" and then somehow edit that component and change those settings?

My problem is that I created a window with glass and I created on the air and not on a wall. whenever I try to place it on a wall the surface of the wall does not disapear and the surface of the glass goes right on it.

I managed to make the component again and sellect the cut oppening, but since I've done that thing on many different components I'd like to know if it's possible to change it somehow easily

      Thanx in advance

    • Problem with textures on terrain from contour

      Hi
I have created a terrain from contours that I have imported from cad.
Then I added some texture on that terrain let's say (Sketchy_Stone_Ashlar)
I notice that on each polygon of the terrain the orientation of the texture changes.
Any ideas how can I fix this?

    • Problem with Sand box tools

Ok I have made a TIN with quite a few elevation and I wan to put a model of house on it. Stamp tool doesn't really work really well with what I want to do since it makes quite a bit of a mess around the TIN.

The idea of what I want to do is to drape the outline of the house on the tin and then make that surface flat and somehow even it out as well and easy as possible with the rest of the tin.

The TIN is not that "curvy" but the model of the house is a bit long and I have a highest difference of the model to the tin (if I just move it in blue axis) of arround 4 meters.

Any ideas of any addons for that?
And how can I make a specific area of a TIN flat? (using smoove seems impossible)

      @gaieus said:

      Hi,

I'm not sure what to say without a problematic example just guessing; when you have inserted a component with a gluing/cutting plane into a model, it will always glue to (and cut through) the face you inserted it. If you try to copy/move it around,it will still be glued to the original plane but any other face that is out of this plane.

You will in this case have to insert a new instance of the component (onto the different face) which will then glue to this new face.

It seems that exactly that is my problem.
Is there any script or something that can make that easy for me? or should I turn around the component to the new face, explode it and make it again a new component?

    • Problem with components.

Hi I have a bit of a problem with components.
I have made in many cases components (let's say a window) that I also added texture on the glass so that it would be see through.
While editing or copying in over different walls it sometimes attaches perfectly on walls so I can see inside the building and other timesit doesn't (I just see through the window the texture of the wall in a bit meshed up way).
I can't seem to be able to find out when it works fine and when not.
Any ideas or tips would be really great.

      Thanx in advance
