    • RE: SketchUp 2013 ;)

I am ok with not a lot of new features as long as there were some under the hood improvements (toolbards, api?)

But what is really bothering me are the icons... why change them?
They were intuitive and clean. The new ones look poorly made... Kind of pixelated...?
It feels like I am using a 1998 version of Sketchup.
Even the face-style buttons in the style panel... I can't believe someone there spent time making it worse.

But with that said, I do like the new SU branding... I have come to really like the new logo.

I moved everything back to the model and restored all my plugins except VRAY beta - the crashing stopped.
      Thanks for the suggestions.

If you download the latest version of V-Ray Tools from EW it will support the 1.6 beta.

Tks! I will try that next time I need to use vray again

      Thanks TT.
I will install the Plugin Store again to just to be 100% sure it's Vray.

And about V-Ray Tools, that's how I usually launch vray πŸ˜‰ , but yesterday I installed the latest vray beta 1.6.

    • Consistent Crashing - Caused by plugin?

I have been working on a file for a few days and sometime yesterday it started crashing.
(Running 8.0.16846 on Windows 7 x64 - ususally pretty stable).

As I worked, it would consistently crash (w/ bugsplat) every 5-10 minutes (it would rarely make it to the 10 min autosave mark).

Bugsplats could happen with any operation - from closing a group, to scaling or moving a group.

This is what I have already tried:
-Clean, fix errors, and purge model.
      -Copy paste into new file.
-Cut paste work done in the last few hours into a separate file (in case something there was corrupt and causing the problem).

None of these things helped, which caused me to think it could be caused by one of the two plugins I installed yesterday: Vray 1.6 beta, and the update for the Plugin Store.

I removed these two plugins by restoring my plugin folder from a backup, and I have now been working for about about 45min with no crashes.

I guess my next step is to install the two plugins one at a time, and see which one is causing the problem.

Have you guys had problems with any of the two mentioned plugins?

You can also use the .3ds format. But the textures must lie in the same folder as the .3ds file.

I have been trying to find ways of bringing OnyxTrees with UV into SU, and this is by far the easiest way! It only took me 3 hours on google to find this post!

Using Sketchup (+ photoreal rendering) to visualize the project while the changes are done in Revit does not work.

I have say to do this quite often, and although it is not an easy process, I have found an effective workflow:

1> Model site and everything that will not change in SU (call this site.skp)
2> Export Revit model to a DWG (choosing "polymesh" instead of ACIS solids significantly reduced polycount... maybe is the other way around... ❓ )
3> Create a new SU file and import this DWG (let's call is bldg.skp) - I always use Thomthom's CleanUp tools to merge faces and clean up edges! It's a true miracle! (Tks TT!) πŸ˜† πŸ˜›
      4> Place bldg.skp as a component inside site.skp.
5> When the revit model is updated, just open building.skp, delete all re import the new DWG.
6> Open site.skp and reload the bldg.skp component.

To help with the rendering materials, I use Convert layers to materials plugin (this paints the geometry based on DWG's layers (walls, glazing, mullions, etc)
and then associate this material names with my Maxwell's rendering materials. (when the model is re imported, the links remain and it is ready to re-render).
(assuming that different materials are not on the same layers, which is usually not the case).

I guess need to notice this only works well when people doing the revit modeling keep the modeling relatively clean, and extremely under or over detailed. - Thankfully, that is my case! 😍

Renders do take a long time, but then again you also save time with an easy and intuitive scene setup (imho)....

Good thing they are sending the iPad from an US retailer...!

I remember something about licenses and cameras as well...

I don't think my rendering was really at the same level as some of the other images, but I think it caught their attention because it is different...
(I did that image as part of my architectural thesis project. You can see some more images of it here: http://issuu.com/guitalarico/docs/urban_data_center)

Rich: with all due respect, have you considered that maybe mobile usage is low because of how painful it is to use the standard forum interface on a 2 inch screen?

I am willing to bet money that mobile usage would rise dramatically if the forum addressed mobile users (tapatalk, forumrunner, or one of those alternatives mobile interfaces that kick in when the user is using a mobile browser).

Matt, you are not alone πŸ˜‰
I have brought this issue up before: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=38220&p=337611&hilit=Tapatalk#p337611

      Maybe someday.... 😐

I can finally keep my plugins in my Dropbox and access/sync them across home PC, laptop & work!!!

Now that's a great idea. More than reason enough to download this plugin.

Although I can still think of many uses for this plugin, I have further improved my SU<>Dropbox integration by using the method suggested by andrea.bianco here:
      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=40866
(The workflow is even further simplified and improved by Brodie here (Page2):
      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=34019&hilit=+dropbox

I have now moved all SU folders (Components,Materials,Styles,Components) to my DB so they are in Sync at home and work by symlink-ing the folders in my DB to the SU folder. 😍

Sorry this not necessarily "AdditionalPluginFolders" related, by it ties in to the conversation above, and I thought it could be helpful for people that end up in this post for the same reason I did. (SU+DB)

    • Keyboard Shortcuts Stop Working

I just reported this at the official SU Bug report, I thought I would post it here as well.
This has happened with me for a while, but today I decided had enough... : )

I am not able to reproduce it, but it happens once or twice a week...
All keyboard shortcuts stop working. Tools still work if I use menu or icons, but all keyboard shortcut are not responsive.
(Yes, the windows is on focus: side note, this is another things that it is really annoying: SU window looses focus...)

This happens at my computer at work, and at home.
Usually while working on heavy models.

      Restarting SU fixes it.

      Am I alone here? 😲

    • Transparent PNG Clip

I often use transparent PNG objects as a material on face-me components for plants, people etc.
One of the problems obviously is the square/rectangular shadows they cast.
I usually just use TOS's freehand tool to roughly trace the edges of the actual image, erase the straight edges, then hide the new profile edges.

I have been doing this a lot lately and it is very boring πŸ˜•
Today it occurred to me that MAYBE once I saw some method or plugin that would help with the task...
Am I going crazy, or have you guys ever hear/seen any tools related to this?

      Tks!

I keep getting an error when trying to extrude a few curved letters...

"General Error: cannot complete the transformation"

Can someone give it try it a try and see if maybe it is something on my end?

      Steps to reproduce:

      1. Open groud
      2. Select All.
        3.Click on JPP (J)
[ Erase Original, border on all, make group, 30 deg]
4.Click on edge, pull, type 2", Enter

      Error.
