+1 for any supplied power management such as cool 'n quiet or ASUS EPU. They do a great job of cutting power consumption and heat load.

RE: How good is the use of RAMDisk? Does it work?
Sketchup depends on processor core speed, the faster the core the better the performance. However, SU can only use one core on a multi-core processor.
You can try the RAMDISK and see how it goes, but I don't think it will help much if at all.
I have an i7 3.2 Ghz, on even the largest file the most annoying feature that will slow SU down is the auto-save. It takes forever on a large file. You can disable this feature at your own peril, it has saved my work on many an occasion where a plugin has caused a bugsplat. Also, choosing an SU style that has the fewest features can boost on screen performance of SU, i.e. shadows, profiles, endpoints, etc. all have an effect on how large scenes act.

RE: New 24 inch monitor a dream to work with!!
Congrats! I moved up from a smaller screen too, the extra real estate is great!

RE: Is this guy serious?!
Driven through Newtown/SandyHook about a half-dozen times in the last month, someone has set up a little memorial freeway-side of 20+ mini flags. I wish there were some other meaningful method of showing emotion than displaying flags. I find nothing patriotic about what happened there.

Very sorry it didn't help. It may be that the proxy is firewalled.

RE: Processor speed help! 2.4 vs 2.7 GHz
Might be worth it to get the regular laptop and put in an SSD later, they keep falling in price. Just built my wife a Win 7 system with an SSD and RAID backup, it runs so quietly and such a cool temperature it's amazing. Boots from cold in ~15 second. If you can't/don't want to upgrade later, consider an SSD if you can afford it.
But make sure you maintain good backups of your system and important info.

RE: Strange behavior: locked up core
Odd. Does your graphics card share memory and/or processing power with the processor? Is it integrated graphics on the processor? This could be the reason for the high demand on a single core, I have an i7 desktop that has no such issues. I have another computer with intel integrated graphics I could test SU on if needed to see if that's the issue.

+1 for numerobis' assessment. Laptops are not a great choice for rendering. Laptops these days aren't built to withstand the demands of rendering and will have a reduced longevity if used for such, unless you buy a high performance gaming laptop, but then the price goes up a lot. Get a less expensive system with adequate memory for what you need and at least a 2 core or more processor, especially if you plan on modeling with it. Save rendering for a better desktop.

RE: It is making me mad
Sounds like a filter issue. Is TOR available to you? It's a little slow, but I've used it on occasion to dodge national firewalls or to protect my anonymity.

A little plant
Just thought I'd share a little model, feel free to use it as you wish. Please don't sell it or upload it to the 3DWH. All textures for the sprout are included except for the ground.

RE: Little Cottage
Do I detect a little change in style? This rendering is very clear and crisp. I like it!

Let me make an adjustment - "Believes his interpretation of the constitution is right"

RE: What the F#ck?
I have a better idea. How about we send every far right AR-15 gun-toting neo-con to Louisiana and send every far left socialist do-nothing there too, then build a wall around the state and forget about them so the rest of us can have a reasonable debate about the issues without having extreme ideologies pummeling us from both sides.
I wish there were more moderates/independents that would stand up and just tell the extremists to "stick it where the sun don't shine". I've got one group telling me I can't enjoy my shooting sports and the other group telling me I'm a good for nothing godless leech.
That's un-American.

RE: Phone app for forums?
Works well for SCF, I wish more sites were set up to use it. Very convenient way to view forums.

RE: I Use AdBlock For a Reason
I don't have a problem with disabling Adblock in order to participate in the SCF. With everything this site and its users have contributed, directly or indirectly, to my enjoyment and better understanding of SU it's easily worth looking at or at least tolerating some ads.
Seriously, think of it. Of all the fantastic free plugins. All the advice, help, praise, critiques. Worth it?
However, there is one area I'll make every effort to block. While I am willing for the SCF to get the ad revenue, I am not willing for the ad agencies to track me and sell my information data to unknown parties. I'm not getting paid to help them, nor do they have my permission. I hope it can be accomplished that we can have relevant ads without being spied on.

RE: Is Coffee Bad Or Good For Your Health? Two Experts Debate
Many studies show real medical benefits for men and women who drink coffee. As with just about everything, moderation is the key. Too much coffee is bad for the stomach, nerves, sleep, etc... And of course there's those Starbuck's and Caribou Coffee specialty drinks that give you a quadruple shot plus a thousand calories of milk, cream, whipped cream, chocolate, caramel and sugary flavoring. That stuff will send you to the moon looking for an insulin dose!

RE: Non-stop harassing sales phone calls
^^ What he said. Never try to opt out of any unknown organization's robo call. I get them too; credit card, mortgage, charitable organizations, you name it. Incredibly frustrating and unfortunate, it means that I don't answer the phone at all unless I know the number, and that means that I miss calls that I do want. The calls have slowly decreased over time, but I still get them. The worst part is that they are spoofing numbers that render them untraceable, and that's illegal. I don't know what we can do, the DNC list seems to be worthless at this juncture and the government seems uninterested in prosecuting these wrongdoers.
