    • RE: [Plugin] Import OBJ with Materials v2.1 20131118

      Hi TIG,

      I've been using this wonderful plugin for quite a long time, apparently it wouldn't work nicely in 2016 Make (I haven't tested in 2016 Pro) but it's working like a charm in 2015 Pro. So is there a plan to make it work under 2016 Make?

      When I say it wouldn't work it's not bringing all the geometry, just some random faces from the whole model.

      Cheers

      I'm getting the same error in a specific geometry, any plans of implementing the safer generation method?

      I am also getting this error in a complex model.
      Any ideas what I should avoid when modeling, so it wont happen again?

      Unfortunately, these kind of errors may happen with complex models where the generated offset surface contains overlaps. This is due to the fast method of generation. I have the plan to have a default safe generation method to takeover when there are such errors. Should go in a next release.

      I just want to add a feature of Artisan which is pretty hidden in plain sight.

      @pilou said:

      With Artisan you must think at all the primary boxes form then subdivide them!

      Actually you don't have to if you are going down the route where you start with a group.

      @pilou said:

      If you fail the first boxes step that is wrong form at the end!
      Very difficult to make the good placement of the first level simplified mesh!

      If you are using the Proxy method you can always go back and forth.

      [anchor= goto=http://artisan4sketchup.com/downloads/docs/Artisan_User_Guide-1.2.pdf:3dhvh3q6]You can read from the User Manual[/anchor:3dhvh3q6]

      With this method you would always keep a copy of the proxy object and have it control the resulting mesh.

      It looks like one of your IT guys "is protecting you from yourself".
      You need FULL read/write/modify permissions to your User's Plugins folder, AND these must also apply to the folder's contents.
      I suspect that there is some subtle limiter set up by them [perhaps under 'Advanced' ?] which you might not appreciate viewing the Properties > Security listings ?
      Perhaps it could also be Firewall related ?
      You'll need to have some meaningful discussions with your IT guys...
      Good luck.

      Thanks TIG I'm waiting for them to try out some options to test.

      PS: Can you also set up [or get IT to set up] your SketchUp.exe to always run as administrator - under Properties > Compatibility - this might help too...

      I was able to set it up, didn't help much so far.

      How are you determining if a folder has "FULL Read/Write security permissions?"

      Right click on the folder Plugins, then properties as shown in the above screenshot.

      Have you got SketchUp / sketchUcation.com allowed in your Firewall settings ?
      Firewall is managed centrally by IT I'll ask this; any specific port should be asking?

      @unknownuser said:

      Have you definitely set the User's Plugins folder Properties > Security > Edit permission to FULL, for each of those listed and applied/OK ?
      As you can see in my previous screenshot I have the Full access already, I can't change as it's managed by IT. I will definitely ask for a fresh update on that from IT.

      Can you Auto-Install an RBZ using the SketchUcation toolset's submenu 'Archive Installer' ?
      No, I get the same error, also when I go to the website http://sketchucation.com/plugin/123-plugin clicking Download link won't conclude, the browser keep on "Waiting for plugin.sketchucation.com" I'm feeling stuck in 2014, good thing that I haven't removed SU 8 and performing some operations over there.

      Is this message just with the PluginStore dialog within SketchUp ?
      Yes

      No

      There's a dot after the name, Name.Surname@domain.com This cannot be edited as it's a part of the corporate IT environment.

      Hey thanks for making this script and sharing. It looks like it goes deeper than the bomb script.

      I have experienced a number of "Your recent operation has caused visible geometry to merge with existing geometry on a hidden layer" notifications while the script is running. It requires a bit maintenance to wait in the large and nested models and OK the message box. I thought you might consider handling this in the future versions.

    • RE: Spot Elevation Markers Plugin - Dev Help/Review

      I see, so can you share what your plans are? From the sound of it I can't help dreaming a plugin that will create an object in the SU to dynamically output the difference to the -+0.00 level.

      Some questions around that would be;
      1- Do you want to attach this to an object that will be manually placed, moved or to a specific surface (i.e. floor, paving, deck) and it will be automatically updated?
      2- Styles for the markers to be customizable?
      3- To be graphically handled differently in elevation and plan view.
      4- Interaction with the section planes (i.e. how close it could get to a section plane?)
      5- Match the drawing units or have it's own unit controls (It is quite common to use Meters for elevation markers in a drawing where the other dimensions are millimeters)
      6- I think it will be wonderful to extend the capability to mark slopes in plan and elevation as well.

      Whew it looks like you'll have a challenging task starting πŸ˜„

      Good luck,

      I haven't tried that direction yet, but looking at the list here I can see there's 3D DXF and VRML which both should export textures, although I wouldn't count too much on DXF's ability to transfer textures. Hope it works and please post the outcomes of your trials, I'd love to document if there's a way to do that.

    • Solidworks to Sketchup import process

      This is my process to import and optimize 3D models from Solidworks. I thought I should share it with the community and hear your thoughts. This process might seem a bit redundant but after I've started getting mixed geometry types in the model I've adopted this process and it makes it a bit foolproof.

      Waiting for your valuable comments to tweak the process.

      In theory yes, it should return the Layer Name that the DC lies on, so that I can use it for conditional calculations. In the planned workflow there will be no Layer changes, so that should be fine.

    • RE: How can I access the layer name in a DC via Ruby?

      thanks Jim, just as I thought πŸ˜„

      so here's how I try to tinker with that example, basically I've taken out the volume and tried to replace it with the Layer Name of the DC as per below;

      if defined?($dc_observers)
        # Open SketchUp's Dynamic Component Functions (V1) class.
        # only if DC extension is active

      class DCFunctionsV1

        protected
        # return layername
        # Usage; =layername()
        def layername(a)
          return @source_entity.layer.name
        end
        protected;layername

      end#class

      end#if

      And I've found that @source_entity.layer.name is not correct, and couldn't make much of meaning from the existing resources unless I start understanding the Ruby. Can anybody show me how to access the Layer Name of the DC (@source_entity?)

      many thanks
