Forgot this one - hot, hazy, summer day kind of thing (well that was the plan anyway - really just used a darker yellow sunlight and upped the red a bit in PS to make it all feel hotter). I am pretty new to rendering and have been trying to get some different effects going. Have tried to do a night shot with lighting for this garden but have failed dismally. Will try again later.

Roof Garden
This is from a roof garden I have been putting together for a public housing project . The garden will be on the roof of a 3 storey office building with an apartment block above it. Some of the renders have worked better than others but on the whole I am pretty happy with it.

RE: Luxury Yacht render and some interior ( Update 5/27/11 )
these are truly awesome. Really, this blows me away - I particlarly like the night one - so much depth. The other externals could do with a bit of wake but that is just because everything else looks pretty much perfect so it stands out a bit.

RE: [Tutorial > Texturing] Texturing an arch - #2
This is great. I do wish I had come across this about 6 weeks ago before I lost my mind trying to this all manually and eventually giving up thinking that maybe noone will notice that I had bodged it.
Note to self: Ask questions: someone, somewhere (probably here) will know the answer.
Thanks

RE: A little exercise
Cool. It is great when you have time to do stuff just for its own sake. This image looks awesome.

RE: New Suburban Garden
I agree with the background and the house. Background too close/too big. There are some big trees on behind the house and I was trying to get that to work but I think I over did it for sure.
As for texture mapping the wall - assuming this means giving it a material that works properly - I really struggled with this because of the shape of the wall. That is - beacause the wall curves so much and varies in height from 500mm to 1200mm I had problems modelling it in a way that didn't mess too much with the material I put on it. THere is a ctually supposed to be a double bullnose capping on it but I couldn't get that to work at all. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

RE: New Suburban Garden
Thanks. It is a frame made up of thin bamboo poles (or similar) that will have Muehlenbeckia trailing over it and eventually pretty much covering it. It is kind of an attempt to simulate making a Willow branch feature but unfortunately Willow is a weed here so we can't use it. When I was working in Germany we once made a bent Willow branch dragon that you could crawl inside which looked great once all the branches sprouted - it is a real pity I can't do something similar here.
Anyway - I tried numerous ways to depict the isea in SketchUp and nothing worked so I left it empty. This kind of annoys me but I was running out of time as I have to present it today so didn't have the time to ask people on here for suggestions.
Anyone have any ideas?
and here is the dragon... (apologies for off topic)
unfortunately I don't have a photo from when we started to trim it back and shape it.

New Suburban Garden
This is a garden I have been working on - it has a few different parts that I quite like - a traditional potager section, a native/bird attracting area and a couple of nice features as well. With the amount of plants involved it has taken some time to put together the model for it. I do everything as an unrendered walk-through as well as doing still images so everything has to look OK in both which means there are always some compromises - some things look good in one format but not in another etc. - so here is where it is at...

RE: Sandbox Contours to Solid
just chucking in that this helped me with something I was stuck with too so Cheers

RE: Curved, ramped feature wall
Yep - that'll work. Thanks. That's what happens when I accidentally miss such an important plugin.

Curved, ramped feature wall
Well, I'm trying to model a garden that I have been working on. It contains as its main feature a large curved feature wall, that as well as curving ramps up from 500mm high to 1100mm at its highest point. I have drawn some wires to explain what I mean
they are not perfect but they give an idea. I have two problems
1: How do I create a wall that follows this path. I have tried a few different things but nothing that is particularly satisfactory
2: Then, how do I give it a material? It will be a face brick structure made of truly beautiful dark brown/blue bricks with a dark oxide mortar - as I said a major feature. So assuming I can build the thing, how would I add a material in a way that will be smooth and look good?I am sure there are simple answers to both these but rather than beat my head against this particular wall for the rest of the day I figured I would ask the community.

RE: That way madness lies
Cheers. I only ever do outdoor stuff normally so I am happy with pretty much any result from this - and I guess like any tangent you follow when you are doing this stuff I learnt a bit on the way. Unfortunately 'where to stop' was not one of those things

RE: A couple of external renders...
Very nice. Like that you have kept the plants looking part of the picture. They are often the weakest link for externals - well, in my opinion but I am a plant nerd so I might just be picky.

That way madness lies
Was talking to a friend who also works way too much and she said she knew she had overdone it when she found herself trying to open the front door with her mobile phone. I said I knew when I had been pushing it when I found myself standing on the front porch thinking about modeling the keys rather than opening the door with them.
So she asked how I would do that so, well I quickly modelled up some keys
but then, of course, I figured I needed to give them some scale so I just threw in the things that were lying around them on my table
note - edited image but still same timeline/concept
But then of course, that didn't seem right because the light was wrong and it still looked out of context - so it continued...
but the important thing is I am not an addict - I can stop any time I want

RE: From the 'I should really be working' file
Cheers. I'm quite happy with it.
Also has the old purple fog trick happening to simulate night.
It's always nice to have someone reassure you that time spent muddling about with images on SU is not actually wasted.

I agree. pete is on a par with the greatest archviz artists you can find on the web (I mean people like peter guthrie and ronan bekerman).
all the renders in his website are great but what is really amazing is that the ones he made with podium have the same high quality as the later ones made using more sophisticated rendering apps. this only proves for the nth time that good rendering has much more to do with the artist involved than with the means used to realize it.
Pretty much - what he said.
This stuff blows my mind. I don't do much with rendering but looking at these images makes me want to learn to do it properly. Totally inspiring.

oh I know... same with me... I was complimenting the placement...
Thanks - plants is kind of why I do this.
Bryan - In this case the sky is from here - http://www.gaieus.hu/su/Cloudy.style - but you can definetely do cool stuff with pictures. Here's one which lacks a bit in subtlety but kind of works anyway - still has some things that need fixing but nevermind. (edited a little bit because there is still work I should be doing and this is more entertaining)
