If you infer from an edge, you'll get a guideline...which is infinite in length, but which should not be visible through solid surfaces. If you infer from a point, you'll get a short dotted line of whatever length you measured, terminating in a construction point. Again, not visible through solid surfaces. These processes are the same whether you're inferring from raw geometry or geometry inside a group/component. If you get anything else, it's most likely a graphics card issue.

The order of events in the promise may be reversed.

Glad to be of assistance. Also, some short sections(arcs of two or 3 segments) of the curve path seem to have chords forming faceless slivers, the distances are so tiny. Again, this can be seen when you zoom in to clipping.

WHat you really probably want to use is something like the subdivide and smooth plugin. Solo has a lot of incredible work shown here on the forums where he makes cartoon characters using that plugin. TRy to dig through the gallery for solo's posts about subdivide and smooth.
