    • Old Version 8.0.16845

      Hey Folks,

First my computer is a Mac Book Pro using OS 10.12.5.

I use SketchUp v8 because I'm woodworker that only draws 'build-to' layouts. No glamor, shaping, rendering, coloring- I just build my plans for design, dimensions and cut list. So, even if I could afford SU 2017 I just would not do it justice and it would be a waste on my humble drawings. Not to say that I'd wouldn't love to have it. It's just my wife gave me the option of buying it and losing my beer allowance for a year or keeping what I have. Well,,,,,, a boy gotta have brewskis.

For years this version worked perfectly without any 'glitches'. Recently it developed a very annoying issue. I cannot open "Preferences" or "Model Info". When I select the 'dropdowns' nothing happens. I don't use either functions often, but sometimes it would be nice to have the ability.

Also, I have a Apple iMac 24' using OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 that the same version and SU works perfectly. I can use all functions of "Preferences" and "Model Info".

I apologize for asking advise involving such an old version, but I thought that maybe one of you SU veterans may have some input. I promise that when I hit the Lotto I'll instantly buy the latest SU version.

    • Having Both SUv8 & SU2014

This gotta be an easy question for some of you "Pro's".

Been using SU versions all the way up to SUv8.0.16845, which I currently use.

I've been reluctant to buy into the new SU's 2013 or 2014 until someone told me that l should because I'll get left in the "dust" if I don't.

So I did,,,, I installed SU-Make 2014.... used up the "painful" 8 hour Pro test and now have this question:

How do I make my SUv8 my default version for files when I launch one of them from their file folder? Every time I open my file folder and click on a 'skp' file SU2014 fires up. I don't want that. I want SUv8 to launch the file. By the way, all my files are SUv8 and I am not converting them to SU14 yet.

My computer is an Apple iMac 24, late 2007, maxed on RAM, OSX 10.7.5, great machine. I am a woodworker and my files / drawings are for furniture plans and SU v8 has and is really great!!

(I don't think I'll say anything about SU14 now... I'll play with it for a while longer. After all, I am late to the party.....)

      Thanks........................

      Dave R,

I have changed both the iMac and Dell's default templates to use Ariel font. The iMac uses 12 pt. and the Dell uses 8pt.

Moving files back and forth the font and sizes remain the same as when created on whatever computer.

I think you are correct about screen resolution. It's not a big deal as my drawings aren't all that large..... I can live with it.....

I thank you for your response....

      Aerilius,,

Yes,,, both computers have the font and size that the original drawing was created with.

My default template on the iMac uses 12pt size font, which is to large for my Dell's 13" screen.

I have to change the size to 8pt otherwise the screen is covered with 12pt dem's.

My default template font and size is set properly for any "new" drawings that I might draw on the Dell. It's just that when I open a file/drawing that was created on the iMac the font size doesn't change to the 8pt Dell default template size.....

      Thanks for the reply....

    • Moving Drawing From Mac To WIN

My primary computer is an iMac 24". I use an old Dell with WIN XP for remote file viewing. Both computers have SU-8 installed.

      Question:

When I move a drawing that was drawn on the iMac to the Dell all the demensions/text is of a different size and font. I have to manually change to a smaller size and font for each "scene" in the drawing. Very time consuming.

Is there an easier way to accomplish this other than manually doing it for each scene in all my drawings?

Norm had to impact many of us woodworkers...... Kinda like "Listerine".... doesn't taste all that good, but it works and I use it every day..... I for one will really miss the shows! If only to fuss about "if I had all those cool tools I could do the same stuff!" Which always caused my wife to yell.... "you aren't gonna buy any more durn tools!"....

      Think there will be "re-runs"????

      "Board Stretcher.rb"

Now you are talking,,,,, Must have..... How many times have you work your buns off on a drawing only to have the "client" ask for it to be "just a tiny bit longer or wider"???

Gotta be easy for us low level drawers to use.... I use SU to do production drawings which gets me in the shop cutting wood. I do not do many "cosmetic" drawings.....

      Board Streacher.rb.... Please

OK, OK, OK,,, I've read and reread all posts and I have to say I'm lost as to where and what I would actually need to get Fredoscale plugin..... (Yes,,, I'm also kinda dense.)

Yes, broomstick,,, I learned that hard way that the "hand" had to be somewhere on the "drawing object" to move it around. Not on the drawing plane....... Even now sometimes I forget and try to move the object by clicking on the drawing surface,,, then I get to old "beach ball" and I get to grin at myself....

      See ya,,,,,,,,

    • RE: Mortise and Tenon

      Pierce1954,

I do a lot mortise/tenons drawing for my projects and DaveR's method I have found to be the most accurate and fastest. If you have copied your leg or style components when you Xray draw the mortise on one of them it will also put one on the copied style or leg. It took me a while go get used to doing it, but now it is second nature. Just be sure that you are zoomed in close and watch the "surface" callout as you draw the rectangle or line. You want to be drawing 'on' the component that gets the mortise. Oh,,,, don't forget to select "edit component" for the component that gets the mortise before you start.... I must be dense 'cause I get half way through something and discover that I have not in "edit Component" mode. That makes laugh at myself.

None of the above will make much sense 'cause I don't know all the correct terminology to explain the steps correctly. Just keep trying..... that is what I did and viola,,, it becomes clear.

      Hey RedinHawaii,

I'm a Mac & PC user. Primarily I use my iMac 24" with no problems switching from SU7 Mac to SU7 PC. Post the file and I'll try to open it on my machine..

To the left is the "stuff" on my iMac.

    • RE: Follow me tool around bendy surface.

      Got it, got it!

I actually got two folders when I unziped the download. One had two ".rd" files, which I'm familluar with, and another folder named RDE_Dir with
      Quickcard Roundedge-english-v1...June08.pdf,
      RDE_cursor_roundedge_bezier_No.png,
      RDE_icon_roundedge_pezier.png,
      RDE_cursor_RoundEdge_Bezier_OK.png.

So, I printed the .pdf and put all the other stuff in the plugin folder......

I had just never seen all the other stuff and had put only the two .rd files in the plugin folder....

Now I just might be a little smatter....

      Thanks

      Hey Gaieus,

Earlier today I downloaded the round edge plugin and, well, I guess that I just do not have the hang of installing plugins/Ruby's..... 'cause it dosen't work correctly. I know where the plugin folder is located on my Mac and have successfully installed a couple of Ruby's, but some of them really give me trouble.

When I download the round edges zip file it downloads and extracts on my desk top. I then drag that folder containing files into the plugin folder......

Sure would like to get it working for most of my drawings.... any tips for this dummie???? (You old Pro's just take it for granite that everybody knows this how to do this. Maybe I've Toasted to many cells....)

      Thanks

    • RE: Scene Arrangement

Just wanted to follow-up and say that my scene question is answered. I now feel that, for my needs in SU, I am in good shape and have a sound method for "scene management".

Got to give big thanks to Chris Fullmer for the "tips" video he presented, it worked for me. If you have not watched it and have any issues with scenes take a look.

Now I am very sure that all my recent dizziness it was not my "cocktails" as my wife was suggesting, it was all that "fly-through transitioning" going on from scene to scene.......

So, guess I'd better have another.............

    • RE: What did you struggle with

"What did you struggle with?"--- Well, everything!

I came from years of 2d drawing using versions of TurboCad.... Could never understand 3d. Anyway, several months ago found SU,,,,, wow, but I still needed some structure.

Sniffing around on the web I found http://www.srww.com/google-sketchup.htm. This is a multi lesson tutorial by Mr. Joe Zeh on how to draw a small table. I religiously worked through all of his lessons and developed a solid working platform that applies to many woodworking drawing tasks.

With his fundamental platform of skills I was then able to ask some questions on the SU forms and could understand the answers. Other SU tutorials also became clear.

I would highly recommend any one that is having complications drawing woodworking models to spend the time with Joe Zeh's tutorial. He is even happy to answer any e-mails.

      Chris,

I'm blown away at your response! I feel that I'm in the "pond-larva" stage in this evolutionary process with SU. I just hope that with the help from folks like you I'll be able to walk upright one of these days.

Yup,,, having done many, many presentations in my "Honda Engineer" life, trust in that I know the feeling you have. It always seem that way..... I watched your presentation several times and it's very good. Remember, only you know how much more you wanted or could have spewed forth... Us'ens in the audience don't know that and are very happy to hear what is said. Again it was very good for us in the "pond" and I've already played with what you said and it works.
