RE: Mac v Win
I just bought some more ram for my imac, and the Mac technician said that Apple is considering quad cores for the next imac releases. He also said the new mac osx release (snow leopard) will be out this summer. Two interesting tidbits

RE: SketchUp 7 frustrations
Maybe this is a Mac issue then. It does seem strange to me that you would need a different driver or video card from one version to another.
I haven't had a chance to develop dynamic components yet, or work with the new layout, but I'm thinking that if I do my main drawing work in 6, I can always export to 7 and take advantage of Layout, which I used a lot in 6 for presentation work.
I love this software, and the best answer for me (and so as not to become a SketchUp whiner) is to drop back to 6. -

If it's any conselation I too am experiancing a lot of crashes with version 7, to such an extent that I have reverted back to version 6, I will wait a little until the stability gets sorted out with an update before trying 7 again.
I also found v7 to be slightly slower than 6 and the component browser just plain sucks....still love SU however.
Well they will have to pry SU from my cold dead hands, but I'm thinking of following you back to SU6 which was absolutely reliable on my machines.
I wanted to add also that it is happening on big geometry models (sandbox 3D site plans), and small residential renders, file size seems not to matter.
I looked to see if my drivers were up to date, and apparently they are. -
RE: SketchUp 7 frustrations
I can't understand why Su6 would function OK, but Su7 would have problems with the same drivers though.

SketchUp 7 frustrations
I was just wondering if anyone else is finding SU7 annoyingly unstable and frustrating. I have been using SketchUp since @Last version, I have all my Open GL settings set as per usual, and I'm using the same computers ( SU Pro 7 on mac G4 laptop, and 24" Imac )that housed V6.
My list of frustrations are:
Crashes frequently and during unrelated operations. (I can't remember the last time V6 crashed)
Everything drawn suddenly disappears from the screen. (usually after rotating or moving,
sometimes command Z will get it all back, sometimes I have to take it into xray etc and then return to whatever mode I was previously in..
Clips really badly. Sometimes so badly that I can't zoom in close enough to say, erase errant geometry.
If it doesn't clip then when trying to zoom in it zips well past the geometry I am working on and send me off into space.
I have a huge white square at the tip of my cursor (which looks lovely against that green background) but serves to actually get in the way of seeing the geometry I'm trying to choose.
Oh, and did I mention crashes really frequently (Freudian slip, but I almost spelled cursor curser)
I have been looking for patches etc, but my software update tells me I'm using the current version.
I took a long time to purchase 7 as I was working on a large project that I felt I really couldn't afford to have any problems with, and guess what.
Are there any fixes that anyone can suggest, or is there anyone going through the same frustrations, I would love to hear. -
RE: Mac v Win
I use both Mac and windows (XP). They both constantly struggle to make sure one can't do something the other one can. Although releasing Vista allowed Mac to get some jabs in over Microsoft's lowered gloves, the outcome will probably be a really good Windows 7.

RE: Amazing inaugural surveillance
It is hard not to go poking around in this though.
I'm not sure of its relevance for surveillance, other than as after the fact evidence, unless they are analyzing within moments of the picture being taken, which would be quite a computer crunching feat. ( I think Waldo was there to see if there was an announcement about tax credits for frequent travellers)

Amazing inaugural surveillance
I received the following via email, quite amazing.
http://gigapan.org/viewGigapanFullscreen.php?auth=033ef14483ee899496648c2b4b06233c
Zoom in ('double-click' an area) ....and watch it focus. Then zoom some more... And wait for focus. What a surveillance tool this is. !
This picture was taken with a robotic camera and weighs in at 1,474 megapixel. (295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera)
It was a Canon that pulled together over 200 individual shots.
Each zoom in takes a second to focus ...and then you can see some amazing reactions.
Bonus points if you find Yo-Yo Ma .... Taking a picture with his iPhone.

RE: Rendering line work
Sorry Chris, one thing that forums teach me is how badly I communicate.
What I guess I mean is create 4 separate rectangles on the face that are separated by 1/4" or whatever you decide, and then pushpull the "t" that separates them in, giving it a little depth. -
RE: Rendering line work
If you give you line some width, (1/4" / 6mm) and push pull it into the surface it will still look like a line, but it should render. Cheers

RE: The queen is hot, so get it on...
Damn DH good to see more of your work. What renderer are you playing with?

RE: Do you put up with inefficient 2D-3D workflows every day?
You just described 1/2 of my working life. ( the part where I'm not doing the design work)
Although I can successfully import full 3d models from AutoCad Architect, Vectorworks, and Softplan, I find that SketcUp doesn't like the geometry they bring, and aside from the problems caused by bad draftsmanship, they are still glitchy.
I am going to try to get some of the culprits to use DoubleCAD XT, from idx http://www.doublecad.com, as from the sounds of it it may make the integration with SketchUp fairly simple,( and I like the integration between SketchUp and rendering software) while providing at least the AutoCad users with a familiar set of tools to use.
I know it has been said before, but it is interesting how there seems to be boundaries that software designers don't cross. I know that some processes seem to be under patent (hence the SketchUp shadow bug), but I keep wondering why someone isn't working on an integrated solution. -
RE: What's this? - a bit of light relief!
Don't fret, it's nothing a bit of surgery can't remove

You can use the eraser tool, select all the lines, then hit the spacebar. That leaves the lines selected but cancels the eraser. You can then right-click and group the selected lines...
Thanks for the tip, it's perfect.

RE: DoubleCAD XT, free commercial use 2D detailing app.
Yes considering that in native operating systems AutoCad isn't available for the Mac platform, I guess it would be a little foolish to spend a great deal of time and money developing.
At work I have both PC and Mac, although most of the rest of the office works on PC's, Unfortunately, my PC is rather antiquated, and most of the comments I make about the video card contain #@** style expletives. Why I would love to have this product is the gentleman I work for works in AutoCad, and frankly is not very good at it. Since I usually end up doing his models for him, if he could have a program like you are developing, which still had the AutoCad feel to it, then our workflow path would most likely be way less time consuming. I also have the feeling I am not alone here, so you may have really found a great market niche.
I'll do some work with your program on the PC and see if it applies to us.

A vacuum tool ?
I find myself quite often drawing something that is destined to become a component in a model, then either painstakingly selecting all the lines one by one, grouping and finishing off the above mentioned component, or doing the old marquee selection trick (only to find I have also selected 1/2 the geometry hidden behind what I am working on and), well you know.
So to get to the point, is there some way to take advantage of the strength of the eraser tool, the part where you hold down the mouse key and scruff around like a real eraser picking up lines, only instead of erasing those lines, save them as a group that you can enter and work on? It could be like a vacuum tool. Give Sang something to do
