sucks that work likes to disable almost all video on the internet, makes it hard to look up a tutorial.

well we have another person who is working on these nets and she already has some of them within 3ds and she said its easier to manipulate within there. so she will be doing some edits and then i will be doing the final composition in SU and photoshop.

still racking my brain as to the best way to do these nets just for general knowledge though.

Yeah i assumed it would be, Just picture a ball sitting on a net and thats how we need the sag to look.

I have the extrude by rails but have no idea how it works...?

i should be able to post a skp file, will just have to check with the job manager, sucks that the majority of my projects and subjected to confidentiality 😞

      EDIT:
OK did a quick search and got some guideliens of how it works. Pretty much it does what i need it to however i need to refine it a bit more. I have about 8 nets in total and they are not 'normal' nets (grid style) one of them is but the others are a bit different.
Will play around with it a bit more however

    • Creating a net

      Hey everyone,

Well for one of my projects i need to create a net in sketchup.
I have a cad file with the lines marked out of how the net looks but i need to add in the sag and the thickness of the lines. I thought i could do this by using the arc tool and then create tube/pipe along path and it worked but i cannot get the correct sag on the lines. the whole net needs a uniform sag in the middle as all lines are connected to each other.

I thought i might have been able to use FFD if i grouped everything together and pulled on the bottom centre point however i cannot seem to get FFD to work. i have tried with each line in a group and then all lines placed within the same group and also everything exploded and placed within one group (if that makes sense...)

Was wondering if anyone knows of an easier way to make a net or do i have to draw the sag and lines individually with say the biezer tool?

I dont have much time at the moment so sorry if this post seems a bit rushed

      Cheers,
      Deano

    • RE: V-ray 1.49 and SU8 Pro. Does not compute....

Yeah thats what i have done, reinstalled 8 and then vray but same thing happens.
An interesting note is that i installed 6 pro and then installed vray to that version. When i open SU6 i get an error message of "SketchUp cannot be started beacuse an error occured reading the licence file. Error code: 7. Error string: CANNOT OPEN FILE" but clicking OK will still open SU6 however i dont think its the pro version. but then it also opens a dialogue box relating the v-ray saying that the licence is invalid or something. even though i entered in our licence server details once completing the installation process.

Ill see what i can do with contacting support, as one of the guys ehre in our IT department that was helping me with the install is at a loss with it to.
Ahh the joys of computer software....

    • V-ray 1.49 and SU8 Pro. Does not compute....

      Hello,
Well finally i have a licence of v-ray at work but there is a bit of a problem with it.

I use SU8 Pro on Win XP Pro 32-bit. I just installed v-ray (the new version that supports SU8). The isntall goes all fine and validates with our licence server. However when i go to open up SU it thinks for a second and then just crashes and returns a bug splat.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, restarting the computer. made sure that im using the correct install version but still just crashes. Even reinstalled SU8 Pro and it still crashes it.
Another person at work also has v-ray installed but it works fine for her, although she installed it for SU6 Pro.

Im at a loss here.... is it worth just installing SU6 Pro as well and install vray to SU6?

any help would be much appriciated.

    • RE: Well hello....

I would love to share some of my work and inlighten some of you in the way that i use SU however due to the nature of my job, the majority of projects that i work on have some form of confidentiality and i actually cannot share them until they are made public by my clients 😞
Once they are public i will try and link through their location so that you can all have a quick look though.

for a quick run down i pretty much use SU to make a base model and get my perspective right, export the image and then photoshop part of the 3d model into an existing photo so that you can get an idea of what the landscape will look like once said project is build. wheather it be buildings, train stations, dams, mines, rail lines pretty much anything. Thats just one way that i use SU.
The other way is to make conceptual type models that are rended out using podium (hopefully v-ray soon though)

    • Well hello....

      Hello everyone,
Just signed up but have been prowling through these forums for a few months now (ever since I started my new job πŸ˜„ ) and thought its best time to sign up and introduce myself.
Well i have a degree in Multimedia Cartography and Geographical Visualisation and for the past 3 years i was an Associate Lecturer at RMIT University (Melbourne) Now working in the industry I guess my official title is now "Multimedia Cartography and Spatial Graphic Communication Specialist" bit of a mouthful, still dont know if this will stick but it probably best explains what I do.

So with this new role have been doing a lot of SketchUp work and I must say this forum has really helped me out a lot πŸ˜„ so a big thankyou to everyone.

Use Podium for renders but hopefully will be getting v-ray very soon, produce photomontages with the aide of SU and Photoshop and pretty much use SU for wahtever I can.

So once again hello everyone and I will see you all in and about the forums πŸ˜„
